About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Austin’s Bicycle Sport Shop Sells to Trek Bikes

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

I read the news today, oh boy. Actually, I learned about Bicycle Sport Shop and its, um, transition, a while ago, but I just hadn’t got around to sharing it here. As it turned out, I stopped by the Lamar flagship store and they were having their going out of business clearance sale. While there, I picked up two items and had a chance to chat with a few mechanics, including one from the Guadalupe service-only location. (It shut down temporarily after my …

Big Wind, Big Beams Biking to Huffman and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on January 14, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 14, 2021

Finally back on the road today. The last road ride was January 5th. Since then the weather hasn’t been cooperative. The route today followed “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” covering 33.0 miles. I made up the miles I was behind I needed to reach my 300 mile goal for January but am now even at 137.6 miles. I rolled off at 11:07 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike. I finished at 1:43 PM.

It warmed up to 65 degrees at the start and was 70 degrees when I finished. The wind was the story on today’s ride. 16 mph from the SW with gusts of 23 to 26 mph. It wasn’t too bad getting to FM 2100 but from there to turning north on Atascocita Shores Drive was a battle. Riding across Lake Houston headed west I slowed to 9 – 10 mph, cadence less than 60 rpm and power 180 watts. Weather summary: start 65 (45% humidity, 43.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 16 mph gusts 23 mph; finish 70 (33% humidity, 39.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 16 mph gusts 26 mph.

Riding east over Lake Houston I passed some more big beams. I think they are for The Grand Parkway construction north of Huffman.

Austin police get new bike supplier

by Dean Yobbi | www.bicycleretailer.com

Bicycle World Texas will replace Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas (BRAIN) — City officials here are recommending that Bicycle World Texas provide bikes to the police department, five months after Mellow Johnny’s ended its relationship with the department.

The City of Austin purchasing department evaluation team made the decision on Jan. 8. Two other vendors submitted offers: Pedal Power Bicycles of San Marcos, Texas, and e-bike manufacturer Benelli. The contract doesn’t require city council approval and is expected to be …

CANCELED **** Miles of DisComfort Marathon

The STORM Board of Directors has decided to cancel the 2021 STORM Miles of DisComfort MTB Marathon race scheduled for Jan 30, 2021. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. After long, careful, and sometimes agonizing consideration we decided the potential health and safety risks to the TMBRA community, volunteers, and event staff as well as the impact to our already overtaxed healthcare systems in Kendall and Bexar counties would be too much. We had opened registration in hopes there may have been a downturn in COVID-19 cases and hospital admissions, but the trend after the holidays has continued to rise with no evidence of diminishing soon. We look forward, as we are sure all of you do, to a return to some sort of normalcy when we can go back to a pre-pandemic race series schedule. BikeReg will be refunding registration fees in the next few days for those who have already registered.

Overcoming Connection Dropout Zwifting Watopia’s Tempus Fugit

Texbiker.net Posted on January 13, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 13, 2021

After yesterday’s failed attempt to ride in Zwift I set out on today’s ride with more hope. Yesterday I couldn’t get my Wahoo Snap smart trainer and sensors to connect to Zwift. I messed with my network connections, the Zwift companion app and anything else I could think of, all to no avail. Today I changed my phone to my main WiFi SSID, connected my desktop to the network with WiFi instead of the ethernet cable and all seemed to be working as expected. The companion app connected the sensors and trainer to Zwift. This worked until 19:56 into the ride when the smart trainer and sensors dropped out. I checked the phone’s WiFi connection, it was still working and on the same SSID. In Zwift I changed from using the companion app to connect to my computer and after a couple of pairing attempts I was back. During my problem I lost contact with a large group but rode with a few Zwifters. I have no idea what happened but after yesterday’s failure I knew some things to check. Below the Zwiftalizer.com website analyzed my Zwift log file of today’s ride.

Today I rode the Vikings Valhalla Recovery Ride in Watopia Tempus Fugit. According to the leaders there 854 riders. Group D was to average 1.4 – 1.8 W/Kg but without a fence I didn’t hold much hope the group would stay together for long. The course covered 19.5 miles with 153 feet of climbing. As I wrote above I stayed with a large group until the drop out when I rejoined the large group was up the road. The smaller groups I rode with helped with the drafting. This went well until a banner came up telling me the Tempus Fugit routed completed at 12.3 miles and the other riders disappeared. From then on until the 1/2 mile I rode alone occasionally passing another rider. In the last 1/2 mile I saw a group of 4 or 5 approaching from the rear. I sped up some because I figured they might pass me before I hit 60 minutes. But they caught me before the finish.

As a recovery ride I rode at a fast pace averaging 20.0 mph. The flat course helped. This was my first ride on the Tempus Fugit course so no comparison to previous rides. I earned these medals: 1 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze for Strava segments. Zwift unlocked the Tempus Fugit achievement. I don’t know if that allows me to ride this course on my own or not.
