About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist hospitalized after being hit by sedan, police say

Ben Spicer | www.ksat.com

Incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. at intersection of Walzem Rd., Fourwinds Dr.

SAN ANTONIO – A bicyclist was hit by a sedan while trying to cross a street on the city’s Northeast Side late Monday night, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of Walzem Road and Fourwinds Drive, not far from Loop 410 and the city of Windcrest.

According to police, the bicyclist, a man in his 50s, was …

2020 was the year Houstonians stayed out of their cars and grabbed a bike. A record 34 of them died.

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

The COVID pandemic sparked a surge in bike sales and bike riding across the Houston region at a time when pedaling — and driving — area streets is deadlier than ever.

A sharp drop in driving could not stop road fatalities from reaching a record high based on data compiled by the Texas Department of Transportation.

That lack of safety was especially true in 2020 for bicyclists, who represent a fractional number of road users but 5 percent of those killed. Last year 31 men and three women died on area roads. The annual total of 34 exceeds …

NATURE’S GYM: Terry Hershey Hike & Bike Trail

Author: Brandi Smith | www.khou.com

HOUSTON — Since I started doing Nature’s Gym, I have heard from so many of you that you love the Terry Hershey Hike & Bike Trail, so I went to check it out.

If you want to log some miles, this trail is a must. It follows Buffalo Bayou for a total of 12 miles and connects to other trails, giving you an opportunity to spend as much or as little time as you want out here.

I started kind of in the middle — off Dairy Ashford — and took the Robin Trail on the south side of the bayou. Lots of trees and shade, which would be nice on a hot day, but the paved path …

‘The problem is multilayered’: Bicycle shortage caused by supply and demand disruption amid pandemic

by: Karla Draksler | www.ktsm.com

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Crazy Cat Cyclery in El Paso is experiencing a shortage of bikes due to high demand and slow production.

Roberto Barrio, owner of Crazy Cat Cyclery, said they are having to turn customers away because they have no bikes available for in-store purchase.

“We have people coming in, what’s super frustrating is our inability to service those orders,” said Barrio, explaining how many potential customers have been put on a waiting list and are expecting their …

15 Months of Consecutive Daily Bicycling

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

I considered not writing this blog. A month after writing 14 Months of Consecutive Daily Bicycling, what could there be for me to possibly add? Well, not much, to be honest. I rode my bike a lot, it was challenging, but somehow I survived and made my goal. Yay me. End of story, right? Well, one would think so, except that those pesky bike miles are more than just numbers on your screen. The represent calories burned, hours spent, and effort expended. I biked farther in …

TEXAS DEBATING 3-FOOT PASSING LAW

By Charlie Thomas | www.bikelaw.com

Make your voice heard in favor of a 3-foot passing law to protect Texas cyclists.
It happens all the time: Someone emails me video footage, clearly showing they were biking along when a car buzzes past, coming within inches of a horrible crash — and there’s nothing I can do about it because we don’t have the laws in place to do something to help.

Luckily, that might be about to change. …

Dripping SPrings

By Dean | austinmountainbiking.com

Thanks to everyone on the 411 on BLORA and Miller Springs. Indulge me one more question: I want to ride Milton Riemers Ranch Park, but in doing the map work and videos, I noticed there is another trail, Dripping Springs Ranch Trail, where their middle school and high school mtb team trains. Apparently open to the public. Anyone ridden there? Worth a try as long as I am in the area? Still a noob at this, so bear with the elementary queries, please. Thanks. Wheels down, Rider side up.

PS. Wish there was a mtb team at my school back in the day. How cool is that. …

Houston Rockets scout’s family files wrongful death lawsuit over bike crash

Samantha Ketterer | www.houstonchronicle.com

The family of BJ Johnson says in a wrongful death lawsuit that the longtime Houston Rockets scout died in a bicycle crash on this sidewalk on Almeda Parkway due to poor signage.

The family of a longtime Houston Rockets scout on Monday filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a construction company, saying its negligence led to the bicycle crash that killed the 65-year-old.

Sheffery Brent “B.J.” Johnson’s wife and son allege that Pulice Construction Inc. failed to adequately mark the “dangerously unfinished” section of the …

Hillcroft Avenue safety project set to begin early February

By Hunter Marrow | communityimpact.com

A project looking to improve Hillcroft Avenue for motorists and pedestrians alike is set to begin in early February.

Contractors will tackle the project on behalf of Houston Public Works Department focusing on three areas. First, a section of Hillcroft Avenue, from Bellaire Boulevard to High Star Drive, will be redesigned. This includes widening sidewalks along that section to a 6-foot minimum, while some places will have 7 to 8 feet-wide sidewalks. The section will also have bike lanes.

The second area of the project will redesign the intersection of Hillcroft Avenue at High Star Drive and Westward Street, in addition to providing a …

Technical Difficulties Beyond My Control Starting Watopia’s Waistband Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2021

9 minutes of technical difficulties delayed my start of the SZR Evening Joy Ride on Watopia’s Waistband. Everything was ready as I warmed up waiting for the 12:06 PM start. Around 2 or 3 minutes before the start I lost my internet connection. The companion app disconnected and all the sensors showed “no signal”. I tried troubleshooting the network connection which seemed to solve the problem for a few seconds and then disconnected again. Restarting the companion app didn’t help. Turning Bluetooth off and on was no good. Looking at my router I saw the internet light was out but all of the lights on my cable modem were lit. After 9 minutes the internet came back, I opened Zwift and was standing on the course with a message that it was trying to find other riders. My sensors could not connect with the companion app so I connected to the Bluetooth on my desktop computer. Then some riders appeared and I started pedaling. From then on to the finish I rode with various riders. At the finish I was 147 out of 215. Not too bad considering the 9 minute late start.

Originally the ride lasted 60 minutes but I rode 52:44. In Strava I achieved 2 medals, a gold and a bronze. I came in 129th on Fuego Flats and moved to level 18. Overall I finished in the top 22% of my category at the finish. The ride covered 15.72 miles with 305 feet of climbing. Since my very first ride in Zwift I biked 1,461 miles in 88:32, and 12 miles of climbing.
