About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Freezing Outside, Hot Zwift Ride Inside With ZZRC

Texbiker.net Posted on December 14, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 14, 2020

I didn’t have to think hard about choosing Zwift for today’s bike ride. The temperature outside was 44 degrees, well below my 60 degree outdoor biking threshold. The cold came as the result of a very windy front that passed through last night knocking out my electricity for around 30 minutes. Thankfully the UPS for my desktop Zwift computer allowed an orderly shut down.

Looking at the upcoming Zwift events on my phone I settled on the ZZRC Sub 2.0 (D) ride on The Fan Flats course starting at 12:20 PM. This course follows the 2015 UCI course in Richmond. My wife and I were there for the worlds. The course wasn’t totally flat but climbing was minimal with nothing over 5% I think. This was the 4th time I rode with ZZRC and the first time on The Fan Flats course. Some shots of the ride.

With over an hour to get ready I got everything in place. I checked the settings for power in Zwift and adjusted it to about 75% to see if that helped me keep up with the group. It didn’t. In fact I couldn’t tell any difference. After the ride I did a spinup and spin down test for my Wahoo Snap smart trainer using the Wahoo Utility app on my phone. I had no problem getting up to 23 mph the test required after 60 minutes of biking. The next Zwift ride (probably tomorrow based on the weather forecast) will let me know if there is any change.

There were 144 people in the D group. I started with them but by 2 minutes into the ride I was number 143, soon to be number 144. I got a 2nd fastest time on the West Broad Street Reverse segment according to Strava. Power output maxed at 213 watts and averaged 81 watts. Again, way below what I do on the road.

14 Months of Consecutive Daily Bicycling

For 426 days beginning October 11, 2019, I have swung a leg over the top tube, fired up the Garmin watch, and pedaled my bike around Austin, Texas. Starting and maintaining several other daily habits like walking and writing back on January 1, 2018 eventually led me to do the obvious one for a bike rider and blogger. Although I’ve traveled the equivalent of around the equator, and surpassed this year’s bike goal (and several other goals since), for some reason I keep at it. Why, you might ask? Well, stopping a streak would be very …

Question: Does the location of sharrows show me where I have to ride in the lane? Answer: No!

Texas law allows you to ride in the center of any lane narrower than 14ft. Most lanes in Denton are 10-12 ft wide and are too narrow for a driver to safely pass within the same lane. pic.twitter.com/776EnmIro8

Cool Outside So I Rode With ZSUN On Zwift Watopia’s Waistband

Texbiker.net Posted on December 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 12, 2020

Cool temperatures hovering around my outside bike ride threshold caused me to chose Zwift for today’s bike ride. Scanning the Zwift companion app I landed on the ZSUN Saturday Social Ride starting at 12:10 PM. This time the route followed the Watopia’s Waistband which was mostly flat with a few short climbs thrown in to challenge my flatland legs. The ride lasted 60 minutes and I managed to bike 14.03 miles. At the start I saw 401 people registered and it didn’t take too long for me to be near the back. Occasionally a rider or two passed me but most of the time I enjoyed the scenery.

Since my last Zwift event I got a new phone and the Zwift companion app wasn’t connecting to Zwift. Fortunately my desktop computer’s Bluetooth connection was strong and all of the sensors connected. I powered my phone off and restarted it then the companion app connected. I like to use it to see where I am in relation to the group and map.

Before the ride I had time to tweak my bike, hair, helmet, shoes, and socks. Using the Wahoo Utility app on my phone I enabled ERG Power Smoothing to see if it had any impact on my power output. My power seemed to be a little higher but still lower than what I generate on the road as measured by my Favero Assiomo pedals.

Below is my ride data summary from Golden Cheetah. 84% of the ride time I held power to zones 1 and 2. This is 2 times my typical road ride. I think I need to do a spin down on my Wahoo Snap smart trainer to validate the calibration. On the road my max power is usually 400+ watts but today it was 195 watts.

12-12-2020 Golden Cheetah Zwift Bike Ride Summary Data

No personal records on today’s ride according to Strava.

The full ride video is below.
