About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Balmy December Bike Ride to E. Lake Houston Parkway and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2020

Due to a morning commitment today’s bike ride didn’t get started until 12:34 PM. By then the temperature was a balmy 75 degrees with a clear blue sky. I rolled out the driveway on my Canyon Endurace biking the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route for the second time this week. I chose this route because of the late start.

I dressed lighter today with shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey over it. No need for a thermal jersey today. I felt comfortable after a couple of miles when my body heat kicked in. Weather conditions: start 75 (32% humidity, 43.5 dew point), fair, wind W 8 mph; finish 77 (29% humidity, 42.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph. The super low humidity helped evaporate the sweat and at the 2:38 PM finish my clothes weren’t that damp.

The ride covered 28.28 miles which improved my month’s total to 88.72 miles, only 60 miles left to reach my goal. It is a small goal but December weather isn’t always bike ride friendly.

12-9-2020 Month To Date Goal Status

Year to date I am up to 8,965 miles. Below is a comparison of 2020 to previous years’ miles. This combines road and Zwift miles.

12-9-2020 Strava year Progressions YTD Miles

Power output eased up from yesterday. Today zones 3 to 7 totaled 51% of the ride time according to the Golden Cheetah bike ride summary data. zones 6 and 7 were 12%. This might be a reason Strava labeled today as easier than my usual rides.

Wind wasn’t much of a factor except when crossing Lake Houston headed west. sometimes I got a break when traffic passed me and interrupted the wind. As shown below the route is flat.

Texas Biking News December 8th 2020

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2020

FYI Houston: Speed Limit now officially 10mph in Terry Hershey at all times

the sci guy | www.bikeforums.net

In a huge blow to anyone on a bike in west Houston and the Energy Corridor, Steve Radack, as one of his final acts on his way out of office, quietly implemented a full-time speed limit of 10mph in Terry Hershey. Constables have been in the park for the last 4 or 5 days tagging people on bikes with radar guns and issuing warnings, and today the signs went up. I’ll let you read the post below for all the info. But thus far there have been no official news releases about this – just word of mouth from a cyclist from one of the Constables.

I am beyond livid. …

New Bike Trail Will Highlight Nature Areas Along Houston’s Sims Bayou

GAIL DELAUGHTER | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The trail is the longest segment constructed at one time in the extensive Bayou Greenways network. It will link three Houston parks and connect neighborhoods in the southern part of the city.

The Houston Parks Board has started work on a new segment of the Sims Bayou Greenway in southwest Houston, the latest project along the 122-mile Bayou Greenways trail system.

The six-mile segment will continue the Sims Bayou trail from Scott Street west to Buffalo Speedway, passing underneath State Highway 288. The trail will connect Margaret Jenkins Park, Houston Sports Park, and Townwood Park.

“Sims Bayou is such a wonderful departure from some of the other bayous because …

Video: Thieves targeting Houston-area bike shops used U-Haul truck to break into one of them

Taisha Walker | www.click2houston.com

PEARLAND, Texas – Repair crews worked to replace glass and frames that were left damaged by thieves at a Pearland bicycle shop early Monday morning.

The thieves also visited several bike shops across the Houston area in a matter of months.

In one burglary, the thieves broke into a Blue Line Bike Lab in The Heights around 1 a.m. on Dec. 3. Surveillance video shows a driver ramming a U-HAUL truck up a curb and right into the front door of the shop, allowing entry into the business.

It was a sloppy job, said …

2021 Texas MS 150 Update

Andrew Davis | secure.nationalmssociety.org

from a December 8th email I hope that your week is off to a good start. My name is Andrew Davis and I am a Volunteer Engagement Specialist with the National MS Society. I am reaching out to let you know that the 2021 Texas MS 150 has been officially scheduled for May 1st. After much discussion and planning, Bike MS: Texas MS 150 will be hosted as a one-day in-person experience in order for us to provide the safest experience possible.

We are excited to launch four NEW routes this year between 70 and 100 miles! There will be three routes from Houston and one from La Grange, all finishing on Kyle Field! More information to come as we are in the preliminary phases of planning.

We will have safety measures in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved including mask requirements, social distancing, hand cleaning stations, and no-touch protocols.

More information on our safety measures will be made available in the coming months. Volunteer registration links will also be launched towards the beginning of the new year so be on the lookout for that. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to me or your team lead.

We look forward to planning a fun and safe-socially distanced ride and cannot wait to celebrate with you. Together, we will cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives! Thank you for all that you do, and we are so excited to see you in 2021!

A Street of Inflatables, A Bold Decision, Zones 6 & 7 Up 2%

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 8, 2020

Counting on the temperature to move towards the forecasted 70 degrees I made a “bold” decision to leave the leg warmers at home for today’s bike ride. But I chose shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket to keep my upper body warm. It turned out to be a good choice as I felt comfortable but not overly warm.

I began the ride at 11:52 AM and chose to ride north on the “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route. Today I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. It felt good back on the road but I did notice my neck muscles getting tired. I think not riding outdoors my neck lost some strength from not holding my head and helmet. Riding the smart trainer is not the same as absorbing the bumps and wearing a helmet on the road.

Weather conditions: start 67 (43% humidity, 44.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 6 mph; finish 71 (37% humidity, 43.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 6 mph. The low humidity and dew point accentuated the coolness causing my nose to run at times. If we could have these levels with 90 degrees I would be blessed. Space City Weather says it will warm up the next several days. I will be outside biking.

In the video in Oakhurst Auburn Trails I found a street of inflatabled Christmas decorations. All they lacked was snow. The opposite side of the street didn’t appear to have any outside decorations.

Performance during the ride mirrored yesterday in many ways. Power output in zones 3 to 7 time increased by 2% to a total of 56%. Zones 6 and 7 were identical. I look at the power number on the road and wonder why my Zwift power is less and I struggle to get above 125 watts in Zwift while on the road I can hit 200+ and stay there for minutes. Golden Cheetah bike summary data.

Now Is the Winter of Our Discontent: Cool Bikings

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Austin, Texas, where A Dude Abikes abides, is not known for extremely cold winters. But the last two years, I’ve been much less resistant to cool temperatures. I’m not sure if that’s because I got in a freezing cold river in Vermont on a dare while visiting in 2017, the very hot summers have permanently thinned my blood, or something else. As one ages, resistance to cold is more common. But I’m not that old; nor has my skin thinned, nor have I lost a lot of body weight. Whatever is causing it, I wish I were warmer. To …

We don't need to accept the zero-sum framework of "pedestrians VS cyclists". Everyone can be better off if we think about how to improve access to trails for cyclists AND trails for pedestrians.

— BikeHouston (@BikeHouston) December 8, 2020

If pedestrians and cyclists have to compete for space that is a REAL problem. The solution is more access to dedicated transportation space. Forcing cyclists onto busy streets is not a viable solution and will lead to more cyclist deaths and less people getting outside in Houston pic.twitter.com/PfjLJ5uUf9
