About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Optimistic But I Still Got Wet. Atascocita – Huffman – Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on April 20, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2024

I was suspicious of the weather when the bike ride began at 8:48 AM, an early start time for me. The humidity was 96% and the dew point was within 1 degree of the 72 degree temperature. But as the sun gets higher those numbers have improved on my bike rides earlier this week. I wanted to see other cyclists and the early start looked like that might happen. Today’s route was Atascocita – Huffman – Walden which gets me to FM1960 where the likelihood of seeing other cyclists improves. I didn’t have to wait because a cyclist passed my driveway just before I rode onto the street. That was a good start.

The sky was a moist gray when I got to FM1960 on Atascocita Shores Drive. The light changed and I rode onto FM1960 headed east over Lake Houston. About a third of the way across a few sprinkles came down and water drops stood on the Bolt computer screen. Sometimes light rains ends once I’m on the east side of the lake and that was what happened today. Riding on Fairlake Lane two cyclists rounded the curve and I waved. Before I reached Old Atascocita Road another cyclist passed riding the opposite direction. Going up over the railroad tracks on Old Atascocita Road I saw blinking headlight coming my direction in the distance, more cyclists. From FM2100 on I didn’t see anymore cyclists on the way back to Kingwood.

Returning over Lake Houston a few sprinkles hit me but not as many as the east bound ride. I was prepared to skip biking through Walden but when there was no mist I rode there. Traffic was active in spots because of the Walden garage sale day. Pinehurst Trail Drive took me back to FM1960. The moist gray clouds still hung around but I was optimistic that it would be dry for the rest of the ride. That came to an end after crossing FM1960 and riding about 1/2 mile. The street was damp and light rain was there. The streets got wetter and rain continued until the north side of the San Jacinto River where the rain slowed and stopped. The wet streets lasted until almost the end of the ride when I finished at 11:23 AM.

Today’s 32.8 miles pushed my week total to 224.45 miles, and April to 585.96 (73% of my goal).

My Canyon Endurace was splattered with dirt and grime. It got washed after the ride.

Spring Creek Greenway to John Pundt Park, San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on April 19, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 19, 2024

Today was time to ride the Spring Creek Greenway to John Pundt Park. On the way back I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway and stopped at Kingwood Bicycles to chat with Ben. The last time I rode there was November 6th, 2023. I set out at 10:41 AM on my Lynskey Helix bike. There were other cyclists on Spring Creek but not a large number. Most of them I saw going to John Pundt Park and returning to the US59 trailhead. I could’ve started earlier but I watched stage 5 of The Tour of the Alps and a YouTube channel I like. Then I decided to clear out some bike stuff I no longer use. On the way back to US59 a man and woman on a tandem passed me. When I got to the trailhead they were putting their bike away and I went over and talked with the man (I forgot to ask his name). We chatted about biking an he said the far west end of the greenway beyond I-45 was passable for another 5 or 6 miles. There is a 20 foot section of sand just beyond the barrier but then the greenway is paved. I told him I will check it out. Then I walked over to John who was getting his bike out of the car to ride. I noticed he had an Insta360 camera and we talked about cameras and riding. He posts his videos on TikTok. All of my talking delayed my finish to 2:32 PM.

Today’s ride of 41.48 miles was below my average distance for this route by about 1.5 miles. Not sure where I changed the route.

Strava top results: PR on Greenway Appendix (48s) and PR on North Shore Sunrise (3:28). I’m up 553 miles towards my April goal, 69% of the way there. The week looks good at 191.63 miles.

The cloudy sky looked like rain might come but I think my sunglasses enhanced the cloudiness. No rain but about 5 or 6 raindrops hit the Bolt computer screen during the last half mile. Weather: Start 78 degrees, humidity 81%, dew point 71.6, mostly cloudy, wind calm; @ Pundt Park 83 degrees, humidity 63%, dew point 69, mostly cloudy, wind NE 3 mph; Finish 81 degrees, humidity 77%, dew point 73.2, cloudy, wind SE 6 mph.
