About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

DESTINATION: SPIDER MOUNTAIN TEXAS – COME FOR THE BBQ, STAY FOR THE RIDING!

by Zach White | mbaction.com

Contrary to the popular boast, not everything is bigger in Texas. Take Spider Mountain for example, the first and only bike park in North America with year-round lift-accessed trails. While that is a noteworthy bragging right, its mere 350 vertical feet from top to bottom may put it in the smallest bike park running. That said, if you find yourself in central Texas with enough time for a park day, it’s definitely worth a visit.

About an hour’s drive through the hill country northwest of Austin, Spider Mountain sits on the banks of Lake Buchanan. The property has been a vacation destination since the 1930s, and when Mountain Capital Partners bought the land in 2018, they kept its …

Problems Solved! Rode Canyon Endurace. New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst Route

Texbiker.net Posted on April 15, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 15, 2024

I watched stage of the Tour of The Alps to get my day off on a good foot. Lots of climbing but not an uphill finish. After eating breakfast I worked on a problem with the ICAN Cycling Alpha 46 rear wheel that goes on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. Since getting home from my Adventure Cycling Association Big Bend bike tour the rear freehub has not spun correctly. The usual clicking sound when coasting was gone. Some people would say that was good but I couldn’t pedal in reverse. After exchanging emails with ICAN Cycling they want a video of the rear wheel rotating without the cassette installed. Earlier I prayed that the cassette would come off without an issue and it did. Inspecting the freehub I saw the paws were not inserted into the gear where they ratchet. I have no idea how the paws pulled away from the gear. I tried using a screwdriver to push each paw in to allow the assembly to move into the center of the gear but all the paws need to be retracted in order to do that. God gave me the idea to wrap a string around the paws, push them into the gear and then pull the string out before pushing the paws all the way into the gear. That worked perfectly. Now the freehub spins the way it should and the paws make the clicking sound when coasting. Replacing the speed sensor battery before the ride was easy in comparison. Then the Bolt computer flashed a warning that the rear derailleur battery was low. Not enough time to charge it before leaving so I borrowed the battery from the Lynskey Helix and put the low battery in the charger while I was gone.

With those problems solved the Canyon Endurace was the bike to ride today. I rode north on my New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route for the third time this year covering 34.24 miles, slight less than the other two rides. The overcast sky kept the sun behind and the temperature was below 80 from the 10:52 AM start to the 1:30 PM finish. Wind was around 13 mph from the south to southeast. My legs were strong and powered me to Roman Forest Blvd. with a tailwind and back to Kingwood with a headwind. Maybe the problem solution with the wheel added some adrenaline to my effort.

Weather: Start 77 degrees, humidity 75%, dew point 68.5, overcast, wind S 12 mph; Finish 79 degrees, humidity 75%, dew point 70.0, overcast, wind SE 13 mph.

9-year-old BMX racer from China Spring to race for team USA in world championship: ‘I want to represent our country’

By Isabella Quintanilla | www.kwtx.com

CHINA SPRING, Texas (KWTX) – Dominick Tremillo, a China Spring local, has been a natural on a bike ever since he learned to ride when he was just two years old.

He quickly found a passion for BMX racing, and at five years old he decided he wanted to start competing, telling his dad “sign me up, I wanna race.”

Now, at just 9 years old, Dominick’s a three-time state champion, a two-time regional champion, and the reigning champion for both.

And these are just a few of his accomplishments over the last four years.

“Naturally he’s a competitor, so we’re just trying to …

Lufkin man seeks bike donations to refurbish for kids in need

By Vanessa Johnson | www.ktre.com

Shane Hayes, a Lufkin resident, is collecting bikes that are donated from the community. He will refurbish them to give away for free to children who need and can’t afford one. LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – Consistent warm weather is giving children a reason to spend time outdoors. Lufkin resident, Shane Hayes wants to make sure that children can spend that time riding a bike, even if their family can’t afford one.

“There’s always bikes laying around, I can take them refurbish them and give them back to the kids who don’t have any,” Hayes said.

The idea started with a Facebook post that was made by a Lufkin woman asking for bikes.

“Let me just see if I can get somebody to donate some bikes, they don’t have to be perfect. …

Stuart Gardner, the velodrome’s program director, said the stolen bikes account for more than 40% of its rental fleet. He estimated the cost of the bikes to be around $15,000. https://t.co/W6PKRdotv6

ACA Big Bend Chisos Basin to Rancho Topanga

Texbiker.net Posted on April 14, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 18, 2024

The video from the ride lacks sound in several clips. My GoPro went crazy for some reason. Hopefully the video without audio in places makes sense.

Leaving Chisos Basin I hitched a ride in the van to the summit where I got out of the van on the way into Chisos Basin. Riding up from the campground was too steep for my flatlander legs. Yesterday was a rest day in the basin but not long enough for my legs to miraculously get the power to pedal up to the summit. The ride down from the summit back to the main road was fast but I rode the brakes to keep my speed at 19 mph or less. The chip’n seal surface had potholes at times and I didn’t want to hit one going faster.

The route went from Chisos Basin to Study Butte, through Terlingua, and on to our campground for the night, Rancho Topanga. I’m not sure why the “Rancho” was included. The campsite was gravel with a few scrub bushes. The bright spot was the nearby toilets and showers.

I made good time to Study Butte where I stopped and ate my lunch. The showers were near where I ate and I walked there to use the restroom before riding on Texas 170 (I think that was the designation). A scary sign on that road said a 15% climb was 30 miles ahead. That came after Rancho Topanga so I wouldn’t need to ride up it today. That was for tomorrow. But there was a 12.5% climb over a mile before Rancho Topanga. I rode up part way and walked to the top. As I recovered at the top a pickup pulled up on the other side of the road. Not sure why he stopped.

I setup my tent with help again. The campsite was on plateau with wind blowing. My tent was very difficult to setup when there wasn’t any wind let alone when it was windy. Showering a quick shave and I was ready for dinner. We went to the Texas Starlight Theater in Terlingua for dinner. The band sang Happy Birthday to Chris. Once the sun went down it was dark blackout. I used my flashlight to go to the toilets. The wind died down some by morning.
