About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston Humidity Made Biking Like Swimming

Texbiker.net Posted on July 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 7, 2020

Wheels down and rolling at 9:39 AM as the Canyon Endurace and I set out on the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route. Returning at 12:19 PM after biking 34.5 miles I again felt like I went swimming rather than biking. Houston humidity can be high when it s hot and today was no exception.

Weather at the start and finish: start 90 (76% humidity, 81.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Finish 94 (66% humidity, 80.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. As I returned to Kingwood biking west across Lake Houston thunder rumbled ahead and dark clouds gathered to the south. Later after I was back home a rain shower arrived but too late to catch me out on the road.

Today was the 7th time biking the route in 2020, 5 times on the Canyon Endurace and 2 times on the Lynskey R300. The distance today hit the average of those other rides. My week totals 66.8 miles, and July totals 225.82 miles, 28% of my 800 mile goal for the month. A summary of the 7 rides.

2020 Driveway Series Covid Fund

by Holland Racing | www.bikereg.com

On July 2nd, the City of Austin and Governor’s Office issued new Orders that have now affected the state of the Driveway. While both Orders allow Adult Sports Programs to continue at 50% capacity, they are now mandating the use of face coverings during physical exercise outdoors when safe social distancing from others NOT in the same household can NOT be maintained. That means the use of face coverings while racing. If you’d like to read through the Orders, the State Order is HERE & the City Order is HERE.

In accordance with state and local Orders, we are pushing pause on the Driveway until Covid-19 cases decrease and state and local authorities deem it safe to continue. Please help us all speed up that process and wear a face mask so we can reboot ASAP. …

MLK could soon be getting some very needed upgrades in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, especially in the stretch just east of I-35 where bicyclist Jessica Saathoff tragically lost her life in 2019.

Looking forward to seeing the progress! https://t.co/9vpeXa0FoI pic.twitter.com/S9RyeJartR

Always fun to return to a project to see it being used. I had hoped to see more connections by now, but 13 miles is not bad. Love the art and pastoral feel of the Sims Bayou trail. As more people are taking up cycling, experienced cyclists are seeing lots of newbies on trails without helmets. Be smart, cyclists! pic.twitter.com/t3Ssgtzezt

Rain Threat Disappeared Leaving A Humid Bike Ride In Its Wake

Texbiker.net Posted on July 6, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 6, 2020

When I woke up this morning it looked like rain coming my direction but by 9:48 AM when I started the bike ride it moved to the northeast. I chose the “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route riding to the north and back for a total of 32.3 miles. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX carried me and after the 12:18 PM finished I decided to wax the chain. Some squeaks from the chain signaled me it was time. The last time was April 14th at 15,881 miles and today the Canyon has 17,588. 1,700 miles is about right between waxing. I prefer wax over other chain lubes because it isn’t messy.

Today was the 9th time biking this route. This ride was slightly longer than the others because I added to the route at the beginning and end. 9 times I rode the Canyon Endurace and 3 times on the Lynskey R300.

7-6-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

Weather conditions: start 85 (85% humidity, 80.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. Finish 88 (76% humidity, 79.7 dew point), overcast, wind SW 10 mph. The humidity made for a muggy ride. After getting home taking my bike shorts off was like getting out of the pool, it clung to me. Wind was friendly today.

The Trailist: Grind the Gravel Roads Near Pipe Creek

by Brendan Gibbons | therivardreport.com

With nearly every public park in Bexar County closed by authorities in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus and locals celebrating Independence Day likely crowding parks that remain open, we might be living through the most difficult weekend in our lifetimes to get outdoors.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought Americans outside as never before, as evidenced by the nationwide shortages of bicycles and other gear. Parks managers tell me that use of San Antonio’s …

3,100 Miles Pedaled in 6 Months: A New Personal Best

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

When I began bicycling more than i ever thought possible, in 2015, I estimated I covered the distance from LA to Boston, about 3,000 miles. It was an educated guess based on Google maps, training rides for two charity rides, and general commuting. Now, it seems I’ve doubled my pleasure, and doubled my money (spent on bike stuff). That’s no big deal to pros, racers, and the generally faster. For me, it’s pretty good. But like my blog buddy back East, I’m …
