About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Some Greenbelt, Some Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2020

I haven’t rode much of the Kingwood greenbelt trails since I sold my mountain bike 2 years and 5 months ago. But today I made up for that a little. I don’t own a MTB so I rode the Lynskey R300 bike on the Kingwood streets and greenbelt trails for a total of 21.65 miles. Starting at 1:40 PM and finishing at 3:26 Pm the shade on the trails came in handy blocking some of the hot sun. This was the 10th time this year biking Kingwood streets, 7 times on the Lynskey R300 and 3 times on the Canyon Endurace.

The week wraps with 244.66 miles getting me back on track for 200+ mile weeks. Of the last 12 weeks 11 of them exceeded 200 miles. This week is the most miles since the week beginning April 20th which was 262 miles. A summary of the week’s rides.

7-5-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary Ending 7-5-2020

Starting the ride after church bumped me into the heat of the day but the greenbelt trails include lots of shade but blocks the wind. Weather conditions: start 91 (64% humidity, 77.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 8 mph. Finish 96 (56% humidity, 77.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph.

While the Lynskey R300 is not a MTB it handled the trails irregular surface which can be concrete or asphalt depending on the age of the installation.

RECREATION: Cyclists kick it up another gear during pandemic

By Tony Venegas | www.oaoa.com

For the last eight years, Steve Mitchell has seen a steady increase of people show up at the Odessa Mountain Bike Park to ride and also become members of the Permian Basin Bicycle Association. One has to become a member in order to ride at the park.

Even Mitchell was thrown back as to how much growth he’s seen over the last few months. The PBBA went from …

No Parade, Virtual Fireworks But Still July 4th; 223 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on July 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 4, 2020

Happy 4th of July! I wasn’t sure if I would see other cyclists along the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route when I set off today at 8:02 AM. I ride this route on Saturday’s because I have the opportunity to see cyclists but today they were few. I saw 4 or 5 at the church on Fairlake Lane and others scattered along the route but not as many usual.

Today I rode 31.87 miles raising my week’s total to 223.01 miles, restarting my 200+ miles per week string after falling short last week. July is off to a good start with 137.37 miles towards my 800 mile goal. Year to date I biked 4,479 road miles and 542 Zwift miles. The Canyon Endurace odometer rolled to 17,556 miles since I started riding it in February 2018. I did notice the chain needs to be waxed so I will take care of that soon.

I liked the somewhat cooler temperature when starting the ride this morning. Finishing at 10:23 AM meant not biking when it was 90+. What the weather conditions looked liked: start 76 (99% humidity, 75.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 87 (77% humidity, 78.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 10 mph. The humidity made me feel cooler but as I warmed up it encouraged my body to produce lots of sweat. Saharan dust still hangs out making the sun dull but not any cooler.

Reserving today’s route for Saturdays I have biked it 10 times so far in 2020.

7-4-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

Today’s mileage was not the shortest but came in at 9th on the list. With the help of the west wind I was able to get to 14.0 mph average speed before getting to Fairlake Lane and improved to 14.2 mph into the headwind when biking west over Lake Houston. Winding through Walden it dropped to 14.1 mph and stayed there until I was back in Kingwood.
