About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

How Do I Take Selfie Video? Not Alone With Dust And 86% Humidity

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 27, 2020

As I rolled up to the stop sign at Old Atascocita Road and FM 2100 the aroma of the cow pasture to my left invaded my nose. The southerly wind brought the fumes but not much cooling action. My soaked hands waited for the wind to dry up some of the sweat running down my arms from the high humidity and effort I put out biking to that point.

The bike ride began at 7:57 AM (early for me) as the Lynskey R300 and I left home on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. By 10:39 AM when I returned home we covered 33.45 miles, getting within 9 miles of my 800 mile goal for June. The week’s total sits at 113.55 miles, well short of the usual 200+ miles. Three days of rain took a toll on my biking. Sunday I plan on adding some miles and reach my June goal but still fall short of the 200+ miles for the week.

Other cyclists were out along the route today with most of the on FM 1960 and east of Lake Houston. I wondered if my “early” start put me in those parts of the route before the other bikers would pass through. Many of them start at Bike Barn on FM 1960 at W. Lake Houston Parkway. I think they ride south from there to loop around the lake to the south and then go north from Crosby, through the grass farms and then west on FM 1960.

With the overcast sky it is hard to see the Saharan dust that the weather people say is above us. The rain this week jacked up the humidity to exceed the temperature. The last 2 bike rides I thought I got out of the pool at the end of the ride with sweat running down my arms and legs. While I biked the weather looked like this: start 79 (99% humidity, 78.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 5 mph. Finish 85 (86% humidity, 80.0 dew point), dust, wind S 10 mph. After finishing the bike ride I sat on my patio with an old t-shirt wiping the sweat off my legs and hands. My gloves were so wet when riding the brake levers were slick.

Yesterday I received the GoPro Hero7 Silver camera I bought. Today I used it 4 times during the ride and added the videos into the main video I took with the Hero7 Black camera mounted on the handlebar stem. I need to perfect how I hold the Hero7 Silver but overall it added some different views. I have a selfie stick but I haven’t figured out where to carry it.

Today was the 9th time riding the route and the first time on the Lynskey R300 bike. The rest of them was on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. Strava reports today’s bike ride was consistent with my usual efforts.

FIRE FIGHTERS AND POLICE TEAM UP TO BUY BOY NEW BICYCLE AFTER THEY WERE FORCED TO DESTROY HIS TO FREE HIM

Showbirds: Take a hike with this beautiful field guide to the Trinity River

By Rachel Stone | oakcliff.advocatemag.com

The elusive roseate spoonbill appeared to Cynthia Mulcahy during a bike ride along the Trinity River levee just this spring.

The artist had started looking for the bird several years previously as part of her two “Field Guide” series focused on the flora and fauna that’s native to Dallas.

The roseate spoonbill was the only bird she painted for the series that she hadn’t seen in real life.

“One time, I saw a pink plastic …

Inside the Austin Driveway Series’ return to racing

FRED DREIER | www.velonews.com

Austin’s Driveway Series held its first race since the COVID-19 shutdown this past week. As it turns out, the series’ comeback to racing included a few twists and turns.

When Colin Strickland arrived at Austin’s Driveway motorsports track this past Thursday, a paramedic pointed an infrared thermometer at his forehead.

His temperature was normal.

Strickland, like the other cyclists in attendance, wore a protective face mask as he waited to be let into the park. Only when it was time for his race was Strickland allowed in.

“There were no spectators and once you got done you had to leave,” Strickland told VeloNews. “It was hardly a normal Driveway experience. But it was still the Driveway. It was …

Humidity, Sahara Dust, That Must’ve Hurt, Oh Those Tires, Splendora Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 26, 2020

Two days of not biking was enough. The stopped and I began today’s bike ride at 10:03 PM. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and me headed north on the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route hoping to avoid getting soaked. Today I biked 44.06 miles to get closer to my 800 mile goal for June. I now stand at 758.28 miles but this week will not be a 200+ mile one; my streak ends. This is the 3rd time this year to bike today’s route to Splendora, and the longest of the three rides.

6-26-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

Weather during the bike ride was warm, humid, and windy. Saharan dust lurked in the air tinting the clouds somewhat. My dark sunglasses made it seem even gloomier. Occasionally a tray rain drop hit me but not many fell; probably a humidity build up more than rain. It is bad when the humidity is a bigger number than the temperature. After finishing the ride at 1:18 PM removing my bike shorts felt like I just got out of the pool, even my socks were wet from sweat running down my legs. Bike ride weather recap: start 83 (90% humidity, 79.9 dew point), overcast with haze, wind S 13 mph. Finish 85 (84% humidity, 79.5 dew point), dust, wind S 12 mph gusts 22 mph.

Biking to Splendora helped by the tailwind made for easy pedaling. After making the turn back to the south in Splendora I expected the headwind but until I got home I didn’t realize how strong it was. I managed to improve my average speed while riding south to 14.5 mph though. The long stretches without interruption helps the average speed.

Around 39 miles after making a right turn onto Crown Haven Drive in Kings Manor a squirrel darted from the right curb startling me, hit my front wheel’s spokes, spun around the wheel, and got run over before I knew what happened. I tried to look back in my mirror to see the squirrel to determine if it was okay but nothing was there. I think the squirrel survived and ran somewhere. That must’ve hurt. Many years ago a squirrel ran into my front wheel and got flipped in the air, landed and ran off.

Yesterday during the rain I inspected the tires on the Canyon Endurace. The tires biked 7,000 miles so far and I expect to replace them soon but the wear dots still show though the center of the tread sports numerous tiny cuts. I removed a couple of tiny pieces of glass but they were not threats. The tires are Continental Gator Hardshell 700×28. They handle all of the road debris with almost no flats. I installed them 6/4/2019.

Austin Transit Is Banking on Bikes to Improve Mobility

BY SKIP DESCANT | www.govtech.com

Capital Metro in Austin, Texas, is set to become the lead agency for a new bike-share program, possibly signaling a trend placing micro-mobility squarely in the hands of public transit.

Bike-share operations in Austin, Texas, are set to move firmly under the region’s transit umbrella, ushering in a move to transition Capital Metro from a transit provider to a “mobility” service, officials say.

The city and CapMetro are teaming up to operate the city’s bike-share program, rebranding it as MetroBike. The move will go live in the fall, integrating …
