About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Colin Strickland: The five races that changed my life

By Daniel Benson | www.cyclingnews.com

Gravel racer picks the races that mean the most to him

It’s Gravel Week here on Cyclingnews, and so who better to continue our ‘Five races that changed my life’ series than the reigning Dirty Kanza champion Colin Strickland.

The Texan triumphed ahead of WorldTour pros Peter Stetina, Alex Howes and Lachlan Morton, but it was a long road to the top of the gravel world. Only starting out racing at the age of 23, Strickland took in road and fixed gear racing en route to where he is today.

Here, Strickland talks us through his career so far, picking out five key races that have meant the most to him. …

Bike Brakes, Gears, Tires and Watch Problems – Ka-ching!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

In the last week or so, I’ve had a bunch of things go wrong with Sophie the Fairdale. Several flats required professional intervention. Now I’m having to get more puncture-resistant tires and they’er not cheap. Ka-ching. My trusty Garmin watch has finally begun to give out because I basically broke the walk and bike functions by using it so much. I’m able to upgrade it even though the warranty is out. More ka-ching. The bike also needed adjustment to the gearing and brakes needed new pads. The Sun & Ski Sports bike shop mechanics say I …

More Clouds, Thinking of Route Variety and Miles

Texbiker.net Posted on June 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 19, 2020

I almost started the bike ride after 11 AM but hurrying it started at 10:46 AM. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route because of the almost late start and biked 32.84 miles. This was the 4th time to ride this route in 2020 and all were on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The Canyon reached 17,276 miles with this ride. My week totals 187.26 miles and June totals 630.44 miles, just 170 miles short of my goal. Getting 200+ miles this week looks probable.

6-19-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

With all of the road construction on some of my routes it is hard to come up with variety. The route names may be different but it usually means a different combination of streets and roads that I bike on regularly. Today a stretch of the US59 northbound frontage road from the north end of Loop 494 to Roman Forest Blvd (about 1/2 a mile) was the only part of the route I don’t ride on very often.

The weather is slowly changing to more clouds and humidity. I peeked at next week’s forecast and the latter part of the week looks wet. In the meantime today’s weather: start 89 (67% humidity, 76.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. Finish 90 (62% humidity, 75 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph. Surprisingly the temperature didn’t get into the mid 90’s like the other days this week. The CamelBak kept the water cold and refreshing. Arm sleeves continue to be the sunscreen for my arms. The wind helped me ride north and lightly punished me on the return to Kingwood.

Nothing out of the ordinary in today’s video, just lots of clouds. which can form strange objects. Dark clouds hung off of my route but never got around to dropping any rain though we need it to avoid drought.

For some reason I developed the desire to look at mountain bikes. We don’t have any mountains and my last MTB left because I didn’t ride it much. The Kingwood greenbelt trails offer a place to ride a MTB with over 70 miles but I don’t know if I would use it.

Part Way on the Greenway. Plans Change, I Adapt

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2020

After an early morning trip to get the windshield in my Jeep Wrangler repaired I read the digital newspaper while eating breakfast. The news didn’t make sick, thank goodness. Prepping the Lynskey R300 I started today’s bike ride at 10:41 AM. The plan was to ride the Spring Creek Greenway to Dennis Johnston Park, about 42 miles there and back. That plan lasted until I rode up to the construction crew at the Carter Park trail head where the greenway was closed with numerous large dump trucks backing up on the greenway toward John Pundt Park.

With the unexpected change today’s bike ride was shorter at 33.44 miles. This moves the week’s total to 154.42 miles putting 200+ miles for the week still within range. The total for June stands at 597.6 miles, 203 miles short of my goal for the month.I had heard of construction on the greenway earlier in the month but nothing lately. I wasn’t prepared with a detour around the closed section but I did ride to Treshwig Road at the Carter Park entrance and then to Cypresswood Drive where I made a u-turn back to the park and retraced my ride. In the video as I rode north over the river I gave the route I usually take but to add some miles I altered that when I approached Hamblen Road. Today’s ride on the Greenway was the 4th this year and the shortest. 3 of the 4 have been on the Lynskey R300 bike.

6-18-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Todays Route

The weather was great for a bike ride. With all of the shade on the greenway it felt comfortable. Conditions during the bike ride: start 88 (60% humidity, 72.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 92 (49% humidity, 70.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 15 mph gusts 23 mph. I did not notice the wind increasing while on the trail but when I got back to US59 it felt windy. Glad I was riding to the north and then east.

I think the video and audio turned out good with nice shots of the trail. I wondered why the number of people was so low and the construction probably was the cause.
