About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

NAHBS Cancels 2020 Show, Will be Back 2021

BY MATT MILLER | www.singletracks.com

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) has cancelled its 2020 event and will not reschedule the event for this year.

Instead, they are considering the next location for the 2021 show. This year’s event would have taken place in Dallas.

NAHBS was first scheduled for March 15-17 and then changed to August 21-23, because of the coronavirus outbreak. Don Walker, the NAHBS founder and president says he felt comfortable about the change, but things of course kept changing. …

Beer, bicycles rare bright spots in Waco economy ravaged by COVID-19 in April

By MIKE COPELAND | www.wacotrib.com

Waco Bicycle Club members ride in a bike lane in this file photo from last year. While the Waco economy has been ravaged by COVID-19, like the state and the nation, bicycle sales have picked up dramatically and beer sales have held steady in recent months.

Waco’s economy cratered in April, but beer and bicycles sold like hotcakes.

COVID-19 did a number on jobs, hotel stays, retail sales and vehicle purchases, causing the Greater Waco Economic Index to drop 2.8 points in raw scoring, the largest monthly decline since Amarillo-based economist Karr Ingham began tracking local trends using data dating to 2000. …

By order of the city, BCycle to keep downtown Houston kiosks offline until June 10

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Seventeen BCycle kiosks in the downtown Houston area ordered shut by Houston police and emergency management authorities will remain closed until June 10, operators of the bike rental system said Friday.

“As a nonprofit that seeks to serve as many riders as possible, we disagree with this order and apologize to those who wish to use BCycle during the protests, as well as for the lack of bike share access throughout downtown,” officials said in a release.

The 15 stations in the central business district and two in Eado were closed Monday at …

GoPro Drama, Tiny Piece of Wire, Donut Failure But Then Normal

Texbiker.net Posted on June 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 5, 2020

My attempt to leave on the bike ride before 10 AM fizzled out but I did get the wheels rolling at 10:26 AM. I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and biked 37.23 miles. Those were not easy miles though. My week and month now total 176.35 miles, 22% of the way to my 800 mile goal for June. I am off to a good start. This was the 5th time this year biking this route. Today I rode the Canyon Endurace bike.

6-5-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood SH242 Kingwood

Yesterday I received the new GoPro frame that includes space for the mic adapter. I tried to find a way to mount the GoPro frame on the Canyon Endurace handlebar stem settling on using two zip ties holding the base with a piece of inner tube on the stem.

  • 6-5-2020 GoPro Mount with Zip ties-1
  • 6-5-2020 GoPro Mount with Zip ties-2
  • 6-5-2020 GoPro Mount with Zip ties-3

I tugged on the GoPro and tried moving it around and it felt secure. That was great at home but it didn’t last long on the ride. Look at the video and you will see what happened. The camera took a spill, not me. The Canyon’s stem is an unusual shape unlike the Lynskey’s round stem.

Heading back home I replaced the zip tie mount remains with an adhesive base which also felt secure and resumed the ride. The GoPro stayed in place but kept vibrating backwards aiming up to the sky. I looped back home again and used a screwdriver to tighten the frame mounting screw. This helped but on rough roads it still vibrated back. I settled for that and moved it back in place during the ride. This is what this setup looks like.

  • 6-5-2020 GoPro Mount with adhesive mount Canyon-2

After making these changes I set out on the ride and all went well until about 20.5 miles when the rear wheel starting feeling like it was wobbling. I was on the US59 southbound feeder headed to FM 1485. The video tells what happened.

My next goal was a free glazed donut from Shipley’s in Porter but that didn’t turn out as planned either. The free donut is for Donut Day.

After that the ride returned to normal and I finished at 1:55 PM.

‘The new toilet paper:’ Bikes are flying off shelves, overwhelming shops

By Matt McFarland | www.news-daily.com

Eric Attayi, owner of the Urban Bicycle Gallery in Houston, Texas, has watched the pandemic transform his shop in a way most businesses can only dream of.

Bicycles are selling before he has time to assemble them for display. Attayi said he’d matched his 2019 sales by the start of May. He’s had to hire new employees to meet demand, and hasn’t taken a day off since February. Attayi said he’d given raises and started buying lunch for his stressed staff.

As unemployment reaches record levels and …

Texas 4000 ride goes virtual, aims to raise $1 million in fight against cancer

By Jack Flagler | communityimpact.com

Every summer since 2003, a group of University of Texas students have set off to Anchorage, Alaska, on a 70-day charity bicycle ride to raise money for cancer research and cancer support services.

This year, the 78 Texas 4000 riders have been taken off the road due to safety precautions in light of the coronavirus pandemic, but they still are contributing to the cause. The riders are putting in their 4,000 miles either on stationary bikes or local roads, with daily broadcasts available on the nonprofit organization’s website and social media channels. …

Hey Austinites! Advocate for Protected Bike Lanes on Burnet Road and Congress Avenue

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The advocacy and education organization with which I’ve volunteered over the last four years, Bike Austin sent out two recent messages about protected lanes on two major streets. Regular bike lanes are just painted lines on the road. As such, they provide only some protection from cars only if the drivers respect them. (Many do, plenty don’t.) Lanes that use some sort of barrier to separate cars and bikes offer riders protection. For many riders, that is the difference between riding their bike on the street or letting it collect dust in the shed. Because car drivers cannot be trusted, I’m generally for …

Carrot and Stick? No, Apple Fritter and Stick

Texbiker.net Posted on June 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJune 4, 2020

I tried to get started before 10 AM but little things sidetracked me so the bike ride started at 10:04 AM. I will try harder tomorrow. The Lynskey R300 and I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for the 20th time this year, 8 times on the Lynskey R300 and 12 times on the Canyon Endurace. The route covered 33.08 miles today boosting my week and month total to 139.12 miles, 17% of the way to my goal for June.

One of the things that sidetracked my start was moving the GoPro camera from below the bike computer to the handlebar stem. I am not sure I didn’t try this before since I had the mount for many months. The reason I moved it was in anticipation of the new GoPro frame arriving today that will raise the position by 1/2″ with the mic adapter slot under the frame. Also It is easier to push the record button now and I can hear the beeps from the camera.

  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-1
  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-2
  • 6-4-2020 GoPro Setup Lynskey R300-3

The rubber band is temporary until the new frame arrives. I remembered to go into the settings and change the “touch screen” lock position so the video would be upright. This saves time after the bike ride. The rolling video studio continues to evolve.

Weather was much better than yesterday with no rain and warming up as the ride progressed. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and sunscreen. I kept the Tickr Fit on my right forearm to give my left forearm more time in the sun to tan the strip where the Tickr Fit was. During the bike ride: start 82 (86% humidity, 77.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. Finish 90 (65% humidity, 76.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

The apple fritter reward for completing today’s bike ride came from Pat’s Donuts on yesterday’s ride. I showed will power by not eating it yesterday.
