About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Get Outside: Hikes and Trails Near Plano

by Hunter Lacey | planomagazine.com

Most everyone is still staying home – thanks, COVID-19. Though highly effective, this can be highly boring and may result in cabin fever. The good news, we can still walk out the front door without creating risk of catching the virus.

Below we’ve shared some great options for hiking areas and trails not far from Plano. Though Texas state parks closed during the shelter-in-place order, most are open again as of April 20. As long as the governor’s executive order is followed – wearing a face covering, keeping distance from others and limiting groups to five persons – visitors will be perfectly safe and able to …

"You hadn’t ridden in how many years?" CBS News asked.

"Eighteen?" Matorina replied, laughing. …

Hiking trails in El Paso reopen for Memorial Day Weekend

Two Ghost Bikes, Tired Legs Into a Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on May 21, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 21, 2020

Today’s bike ride started at 10:59 AM and went south and east on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route covering 34.11 miles, a mile or two longer than usual because I wanted to the week’s total to reach at least 140 miles. Thanks to the 34.11 miles the week now totals 140.79 miles setting up a 200+ mile week with three potential biking days left. Those miles also put me past my 660 mile goal for May at 666.63 miles. Speaking of miles the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike (what I rode today) clicked to 16,713 miles. 18 times this year I biked this route, probably this most frequently used route. Golden Cheetah shows year to date rides by total distance and bike.

With the south and east direction a headwind greet me and my tired legs. My legs didn’t have much kick in them today to fight the SE 13 mph wind which increased to 15 mph during the ride. The best I could do on my average speed was 13.3 mph for short time on the way back from Huffman. Even with a tailwind I didn’t have strong pedaling from Huffman to the 1:58 PM finish. Weather during the bike ride: 88 (68% humidity, 75.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 88 (66% humidity, 75.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey. With the clouds the temperature didn’t get as hot as the earlier days in the week. Biking west over Lake Houston I kept my speed above 15 mph with tailwind help but once I left FM 1960 it was harder to keep that pace the closer I got to Kingwood. Back in Kingwood I settled into 13 to 14 mph to the finish. Over training crossed my mind as I thought of my lack of power for much of the bike ride.

The video covers the ride in about 2 and a half minutes with stops for two ghost bikes, rest break, and some flags blowing in the wind plus other clips. Yesterday was the Ride of Silence which made me think of the ghost bikes.

Construction crews worked on both ends of the West Lake Houston Parkway bridges replanting the median grass removed for the lane crossovers. This reduced traffic to one lane. Biking south I rode in the shoulder but the return trip I rode the walkway/bikeway avoiding the lanes closure.

Bonking While Carrying Apple Fritters

Texbiker.net Posted on May 20, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 20, 2020

How would I know carrying two apple fritters from Pat’s Donuts to home would contribute to a bonk and tired legs. It all began at 10:29 AM as I began the bike ride on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. 35.85 miles later I slowly finished the bike ride at 1:29 PM out of energy. May I should’ve ate one of those apple fritters before I finished.

So far this year I biked this route 10 times. Today I rode my Lynskey R300 bike for the third time on this route with the Canyon Endurace accounting for the other 7 times. A summary of those rides.

5-20-2020 YTD Bike Ride Summaries New Caney Tavola Valley Ranch

The weather changed slightly from Monday and Tuesday with more clouds but not any cooler. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey with a healthy dose of spray on sunscreen. Wind was light and not a major factor until I ran out of energy as I entered Kings Manor towards the end of the ride. Weather while I biked: start 84 (79% humidity, 77.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. Finish 92 (60% humidity, 75.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph.

Today’s video highlights include lots of red roses and Pat’s Donuts. Compressing the ride into 2:44 was a lot shorter than the 2:37:50 it took to bike it.

Normally I include the Strava activity embed here but with the recent changes to non-subscribers when I go to my activities to get the code it says “too many requests”. Update: Strava recovered.

Maybe RideWithGPS and SportTracks will be better.

I did manage to get a screenshot before Strava closed me off of the Year Progressions Overview comparing year to date for years 2011 to 2020.
