About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cameron Park could expand with 28-acre ‘bike ranch’ purchase after council vote

By J.B. SMITH | www.wacotrib.com

The Waco City Council on Tuesday will consider expanding Cameron Park for the first time in decades by purchasing a 28-acre tract that operates as a private bicycle trail course.

The council will vote on spending $750,000 for a section of the “Ranch at Cameron Park” property owned by the family of Waco businessman Todd Behringer.

The property is south of the park’s Northern Gateway section, extending south to the corner of Adeline and Merriwood Drives, which is its main entrance.

Since buying the property in 2014, Behringer has allowed the …

KPRC’s Anavid Reyes took to the streets to learn more about how Houstonians felt about using their bikes to get from point A to point B. The list of reasons for not using their bike is long for …

3 People I Saw Within 6 Miles on 1 Bike Ride

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

I ran into three people I know in the span of six miles while riding my bike last evening. What are the chances of that, especially with many people staying home because of you, know, the thing? Well, I’ve been in Austin, Texas for 20 years and 16 days. So I have met plenty of people in that time. These three encounters got me to thinking about acquaintances, friends, colleagues, bona fides – in short, the other humans who comprise my community. At a time when the fabric of society is being shredded, while some people sew face masks, what does it mean to be homo sapiens? As George Costanza put it in a Seinfeld episode, “We’re living in a society, here!”

The first in my trio of random encounters was with a fellow volunteer with Bike Austin, who lives around here somewhere. She was a follower of this …

Biking Through Atascocita, Walden and Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on May 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 19, 2020

I thought I would start today’s bike ride earlier but little chores kept popping up so I rolled out at 10:46 AM, the same time as yesterday. I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route to get enough miles to put the week’s total in position to bike 200+ miles for the week. The bike ride covered 34.52 miles and the week now totals 70.84 miles and 596.68 miles for the month. My goal for May is 660 miles, well within reach. Year to date I am way ahead of previous years with 3,096 road miles and 542 Zwift miles. Today was the fourth time to ride this route in 2020. A summary of the rides.

5-19-2020 YTD Ride Summaries Atascocita South Walden Huffman

The Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and I set out in near ideal weather. The humidity edged up some from yesterday but the wind held back. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts for the third day in a row as I retire older shorts. Weather as I biked: start 88 (66% humidity, 75.0 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 92 (58% humidity, 74.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 9 mph. A short sleeve jersey and sunscreen completed my outfit. The temperature was in my sweet zone of upper 80’s to 90’s which is above the normal for May. This reminded me of biking the Florida Keys in the middle of May 2017.

GoPro’s phone app created today’s video selecting segments from the 6 clips I took during the bike ride.

Construction crews worked on the south end of the West Lake Houston Parkway bridge over the San Jacinto River closing the median where the detour crossed. Traffic squeezed to one lane but enough room remained for me to get through.

With Little to Do Staying at Home, More People are Picking up a Bike

BY MATT MILLER | www.singletracks.com

Early on in the US coronavirus outbreak we reached out to a few bike brands and asked how the pandemic, and seizure of the economy, was affecting them. They were all reluctant to speak at the time, mostly because they had no idea what was about to happen to their businesses. When the economy stops, most of us would assume that purchases on recreational items like bikes would also stop.

But, as we have settled into life at home, it turns out that bikes have become more important than ever. With nowhere to go, nothing to do, and …

How Do You Stay Inside With Weather Like This?

Texbiker.net Posted on May 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 18, 2020

Great start this week biking. I hit the road at 10:46 AM biking the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. By the time I finished at 1:41 PM I rode 36.32 miles. This was the fourth time to ride this your in 2020 all on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The Canyon odometer turned to 16,644 miles with this ride.

5-18-2020 YTD Ride Summary Kingwood SH 242 Kingwood

This week the temperature will heat up into the 90’s with lots of clear sky. Today’s weather while I rode: start 87 (52% humidity, 67.5 dew point), fair, wind NE 5 mph. Finish 90 (42% humidity, 63.4 dew point), fair, wind variable 4 mph. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts and a short sleeve jersey. Not battling a headwind made pedaling nice. I built my average speed up to 14.5 mph and held it there until I got back to Kingwood Drive.

Today’s video lasts 41 seconds showing highlights of the bike ride. I created it using the GoPro app on my phone.

Some wildflowers are holding on along the US59 frontage road headed north to FM 1314 thanks to lots of sunshine and just enough rain. I saw one other serious cyclist as I rode in Oakhurst but he surprised me before I could turn the GoPro on. The 3 second delay after I push the record button requires me to spot things in advance. I use the QuikCapture mode to save the GoPro battery. The helmet mount is what I used today. My new mic shipped today.
