McCOOK — Revs. Juan Manual Salazar and Greg Labus hopped on their bikes around 8 a.m. Friday morning, intending to ride from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church here to San Isidro Catholic Church as a pilgrimage made in prayer for rain.

Transportation Services will launch the annual Texas State University bicycle round-up May 20.

The bicycle round-up is an annual collection of abandoned bicycles on campus. A bicycle will be considered abandoned if it is parked for more than a week in the same place on campus without moving, after it has been issued an abandonment notice.

Transportation Services understands that with the move to remote instruction mid-semester, many students may have left campus without making bike accommodations. Students wishing to reclaim bicycles from storage should be prepared to provide at least one of these items: …

I Made It But Not By Much

I made it but not by very many miles. With today’s bike ride on the “Atascocita – Waden – Huffman” route of 32.81 miles my total for the week came in at 205.4 miles. I biked 6 weeks in a row of 200+ miles and since the week of March 9th 9 of the 10 weeks hit 200+ miles. Another mileage mark hit with the Lynskey R300 bike now at 1033 miles after today’s bike ride. Just for more miles May totals 525.84 miles, 135 miles left to reach May’s goal of 660 miles. A summary of this week’s rides.

At the 1:46 PM start of the ride the wind was from the NW at 10 mph which helped me ride to the south and east most of the time. I knew the return ride from Huffman would face a headwind but I didn’t know the wind would increase from the NW to 17 mph with 23 mph gusts. Before I finished at 4:17 PM I thought my legs were just tired from the ride and not eating much but when I saw how strong the wind became I gave my legs credit for powering me home, bonk or not. The PowerPod charts show how the wind came into play during the bike ride.

The second chart from the top shows how the wind affected the bike ride. When the blue area is below the white line a tailwind exists and when the blue area is above the white line a headwind exists. Spikes of blue represent the gusts. Weather during my bike ride: start 83 (64% humidity, 69.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 10 mph. Finish 85 (60% humidity, 69.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 17 mph gusts 23 mph. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel Shorts (and retired a pair I first used 9/23/2018) and a short sleeve jersey to enjoy the cool wind and sun.

Chased Dark Clouds North Then South. GoPro Audio Better

After not biking yesterday that left only two days to ride the necessary miles to make this a 200+ mile week. Before today’s bike ride the week totaled 141 miles leaving 59 miles. I started late at 12:01 PM to ride the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route. The Canyon Endurace was ready get going. Biking 31.46 miles today set up Sunday to ride for the rest of the 28 miles needed for the 200+ mile week. I chose the northerly route today and will head south tomorrow on the Lynskey R300. Today was the third time riding this route in 2020. The other two rides traveled slightly more miles each. I stayed on the US59 frontage road today instead of taking Community Drive east to Loop 494.

5-16-2020 YTD Rides Summary New Caney Roman Forest Blvd Oakhurst

Early in the morning I wasn’t sure about biking today after the rain but by 9 AM the rain stopped and the streets started drying off. I kept a wary eye on the weather radar since the forecast said afternoon was possible. With some heavy clouds as I started the bike ride I wondered if I would get wet. The clouds on the horizon looked threatening but as I got to where they looked dark they moved more to the north like a carrot on a stick. While the wind wasn’t that strong the lack of sun made it feel chilly making me glad I opted for the long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. I did feel and see a light mist in Woodridge Forest for a few seconds but I kept riding hoping it would fade away. The weather while I biked: start 75 (82% humidity, 69.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 76 (79% humidity, 69.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph.

I continued to experiment with the GoPro audio during today’s bike ride. I returned the Rode mic and used the GoPro internal mic with the camera mounted on the front of my helmet. I turned ProTune on and set the mic to Auto. I think the audio today was good but not great. I ordered a lapel mic with a 3.5mm jack to use with the GoPro mic adapter so I can move the GoPro from helmet to the handlebar. The helmet position takes good video but is heavy by the end of the ride. Maybe I need to build up my neck muscles.
