About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sharing your good news: Austinites on the hike-and-bike trail share their positivity

Hank Cavagnaro | www.kvue.com

This week Hank Cavagnaro went downtown to ask people what good news they have to share during this pandemic.

AUSTIN, Texas — We’re continuing our series of "share your good news" where we go out and ask you to share something good that’s happening throughout this quarantine.

I asked some people on the hike-and-bike trail and to share their good news. Here are some of the responses I got.

"It’s a time for me to slow down and …

Wichita Falls Hotter’N Hell 100 Goes Virtual Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

I attended the final day of the Wichita Falls Hotter’N Hell 100 event my first year in this town. I was impressed by what a HUGE deal it was, and how well executed and entertaining it all was. But, I have not returned. I do not remember what caused the non-returns, but I had planned on returning this year.

As recently as a week ago I saw HHH officials indicating the event was still on track, despite the ongoing COVID-19 nightmare.

And then this morning on the …

Help Improve North Lamar Shared Use Paths

bikeaustin.org

Help make North Lamar safe for biking! A virtual public hearing is starting TODAY regarding improvements planned for the northernmost part of Lamar Boulevard: the 6-mile stretch from 183 up to Howard Lane/I-35. This is a high-volume, high-speed road that’s owned and maintained by TxDOT, and it currently has no bike facilities at all. But it’s very much a part of the City of Austin, and we need it to be safe for biking. You can review the current plans, and watch a video of the city’s presentation, here.

The good news is that the planned, funded improvements include 12 miles of new, shared-use paths, which would create continuous bike facilities along both sides of …

Those 12 stations normally comprise 70% of our nonprofit's bike rental revenue, and they're still closed right now.

Despite that obstacle, we just had the biggest week of ridership in our program's history.

HHH 2020 shifts to virtual event in light of coronavirus

Deanna Watson | www.timesrecordnews.com

In what described as a difficult decision, Hotter’N Hell Hundred organizers announced Thursday that the city’s signature outdoor event this year would, for all intents and purposes, be canceled and transformed into a virtual cycling opportunity.

The decision was made "because of the dangers the COVID-19 virus poses to the safety and health of our riders, runners, volunteers and community."

Instead of an in-person ride, which draws thousands of people to Wichita Falls each August, from professionals to seasoned enthusiasts to wannabe cyclists and runners, HHH will instead offer a virtual event where …

Cycling Tour of Historic East End District: Art Murals & Installations

By Teresa Biggar | bcoadventures.com

The East End District of Houston celebrates its rich history through public art along Harrisburg & Navigation Boulevards, and the streets in between. The most visible are the murals on buildings of many businesses. However, a keen eye will spot the artwork on bus and rail shelters, mail and electrical boxes, light fixtures and more! Local artists and students worked with local businesses and the City of Houston to create this colorful storytelling of the East End culture.

I toured this beautiful district with fellow BCO cyclists (names removed by request) last Saturday while the weather was cool and sunny. We rode from …

El Pasoans turn to bicycling amid COVID-19 pandemic

by: Marlenn Barraza | www.ktsm.com

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – One hobby many El Pasoans are picking up for exercise is bicycling and many are trying to get their hands on either a new bike or trying to fix the ones they already own. Bike shops in the sun city are getting plenty of business and local shop hopes the surge of bicyclists leads to change.

Howdy y’all and greetings from The Lone Star state!

jc907 | www.bikeforums.net

Caution: This is long. Move on if you’re not into reading more than a couple of minutes. If you decide to continue, know that you’ve been warned!

Having made the decision to finally get back into the saddle after a very looong hiatus, I’ve found that – like all technology – the bike world has changed so much since I lived in the saddle as a youth sooo long ago that I barely recognize it. Just to give you an idea how long ago that was: when I started riding, mountain bikes were a relatively new novelty and had not yet gone mainstream; it was so long ago that gear shifters were still placed on the downtube and were of the friction variety; it was so long ago that Reynolds 531 and Columbus SL were still the frame materials of choice for most builders; and finally, it was so long ago that most of the top frame masters still literally built frames by hand. I think you folks get the idea. So, in an effort to try to get up to speed on all things bicycle, I thought it might be a good start to join a forum such as this where I can pick the brains of those who know better than I at this point.

Since this is an introduction, a little background is in order: I was born in the "Boogey-Down" in the very early ’60s (for those uninitiated, that’s The Bronx) and raised throughout NYC, moving from one borough to the next if the rent got too high or the neighborhood got too gentrified one way or another for my mom’s liking (she insisted we live in a mixed area because we were too poor to actually travel and she still wanted me to learn about other people and cultures – Memory eternal!). With my …

Silent Video, Who Says Old Guy Can’t Handle A Route Change, Light Headed With Helmet Room

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2020

A change in plans for Friday and I switched to another route from the one planned. A phone call from the AC company moved the installation from Tuesday to Friday. To ride a few extra miles I chose the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route biking 39.04 miles. Until the change I thought I was setup to bike 200+ miles this week but not riding on Friday and possible rain on Saturday that looks doubtful. After today’s bike ride my week’s total stands at 141.13 miles. May now totals 461.58 miles, 200 more miles to reach my goal. With the month not quite half done I think my goal looks good.

My search for better audio in the video failed today. The sound was different but picked up road noise instead of my voice. The USB-C mic is not working. Next I will try the Rode VideoMic Go. It is much larger than the USB-C mic but uses a different cable to the GoPro mic adapter. So today’s video is mostly silent except for a short clip of me.

No mist during today’s bike ride though on Fairlake Drive some drops started coming down until I made the left turn onto Old Atascocita Road. That’s good because the only option if it started raining was to keep on riding with no shelter nearby except for the church just before FM 2100. Weather while I biked: start 81 (87% humidity, 77.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 86 (76% humidity, 78.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey. For water I carried my CamelBak but after filling it before the ride water started coming out of the filler cap area. Unscrewing the cap and screw it back fixed the problem thankfully.

I had extra room under my helmet today thanks to a haircut yesterday. A lot of hair fell on the floor at the hair salon. I told Bobbie I felt light headed after the cut and because of the long wait to get it cut I got very attached to the hair.

At Ramsey Road I stopped for a break to eat a Blueberry Crisp Clif Bar. Photos of the Canyon Endurace there.

  • 5-14-2020 Bike Ride Ramsey Road-2
  • 5-14-2020 Bike Ride Ramsey Road-3

At the rest stop I walked in some soft dirt filling my cleats with dirt. That made it hard to clip in and when I got home I used several tools to get the dirt out of the cleats. When I looked at the pedals I realized I needed to wash the Canyon too. My Sidi shoes have 23,672 miles on them and look like I may need to replace them in the not too distant future. (I track the miles using the SportTracks program which has the best gear tracking information)

We Are Running Out Of Bikes

By Travis Engel | www.bikemag.com

But the coronavirus boom isn’t all to blame

Two months ago, bike shops were facing the same challenge as every other business: Stay above water when it seems the whole world is drowning. Many were preparing for a sort of hibernation, including putting a halt to the often huge speculative restocking orders that happen that time of year. For most shops, that hibernation lasted about a week. Then suddenly, bikes started selling like toilet paper, a phenomenon we just recently covered. Now, two months later, the world’s supply of new bikes is running out. Like toilet paper. …

It surprises me a little, even though I’m the one who decided to “make it so.” That’s because it’s a lot of effing work. Like most everyone, I’m having to deal with how our long international nightmare is impacting life. And a big part of my life is bicycling. Bike sales jump in area as more people flock to trails for exercise during COVID-19

by Jim Lefko | news4sanantonio.com

SAN ANTONIO – If it seems like you’re seeing more people cycling around San Antonio during the pandemic, it’s may be because bike sales are way up.

After canoe trip, Franklin High trio reunites for bike ride to Alamo
