About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Before Today’s Bike Ride Even Began I Was In Hot Water

Texbiker.net Posted on May 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 5, 2020

Before today’s bike ride even began I was in hot water. That was a good thing for a change. The plumbers just left are installing a new water heater and now I should not need to go up in the attic to restart the pilot light or get part way through a shower and cold water spray me. The water heater was 20 years old and the gas control valve acted up for probably 15 of them. No more! I stayed home yesterday waiting for the plumbers to come to assess what they needed and today at 8:45 AM they started. The water heater is in the attic in a low height area making for a tough job. It took 3 men to take the old one out and lift the bigger diameter new one up the hide-away ladder through a narrow opening.

After they left I got ready to ride. To make up some of the miles I didn’t ride yesterday I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route and biked 41.38 miles starting at 11:57 AM and finishing at 3:16 PM. With those miles my May total stands at 137.8 miles, 21% of the way to my 660 mile goal for May. The Canyon Endurace is up to 16,351 miles. I should check the rear tire for wear since it now has 6,000 miles on it.

I experimented taking the ride video. Instead of using the helmet mount I switched to a selfie stick. The video was better but I don’t have a good place to put the GoPro/selfie stick combo when I am not shooting video. I thought I had a spot using the CamelBak chest strap but the GoPro fell out, landed on the street and I rode over it. Not good. At the 10 mile point I moved the camera to the mount under my Bolt computer. The video was good but my voice was too distant and the lens had a smudge from my jersey pocket. I am thinking tomorrow I will try the camera below the Bolt and use a USB-C mic. The helmet mount weighed more than I liked and I think the helmet was forming grooves in my head.

The sun wanted to be out for the bike ride but the clouds overruled it. What it was like during the bike ride: start 87 (70% humidity, 76.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 8 mph. Finish 89 (63% humidity, 74.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 6 mph. Shorts and a short sleeve jersey was just right. The forecast called for late afternoon rain chance but nothing appeared.

Texas Biking News May 4th 2020

Willow City Loop, Fredericksburg, Texas April 2020

Roy and Christine | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

Willow City is just out of Fredericksburg off of State Highway 16. The Willow City Loop is noted for spring wildflowers, especially bluebonnets.

As I have mentioned in past posts, the organized tours we had signed up for have all been cancelled or postponed. So, Christine and I decided to take a day trip to Willow City and remember the good times when the loop was part of the Pedal Power Wildflower Ride out of Stonewall. …

Why Outside Is Tracking Every Cycling Death in 2020

Christopher Keyes | www.outsideonline.com

You can’t stop what you can’t see happening

Generally speaking, a U-shaped curve on a graph that tracks fatalities over time is a sign of an emerging public-health issue that warrants serious concern. That’s exactly what you find when looking at the number of cyclists killed by drivers in the U.S. over the past three decades. From 1990 until 2010, fatalities dropped 27 percent, from 859 to 623 per year. From 2010 to 2018, they …

… Statistics can make important issues feel cold and abstract. But for Outside, bike safety is personal. In 2018, longtime Outside writer and passionate cyclist Andrew Tilin was killed when he was hit by a driver of a truck while fixing a flat on his bike outside Austin, Texas. Last year, the fiancé of features editor Gloria …

May is (still) Bike Month

fortworthtexas.gov

Hitting the streets during Bike Month? Remember to stay safely distanced from other riders. When more people ride bikes, life is better for everyone. It’s why in May, the League of American Bicyclists is still celebrating National Bike Month.

Because we could all use some bike joy to look forward to, the League anticipates that the hundreds of thousands who participate in Bike Month events in typical years continue to do so through virtual, solo or safely-distanced events in May and beyond.

Given the extraordinary and …

Local doctor gives back to children around the world

By Jerrie Whiteley, Grayson Magazine | www.heralddemocrat.com

While everyone everywhere is currently focused on fighting the spread of the COVID-19 virus, one local woman has spent decades fighting the outbreak of diseases in countries all over the world. In pursuit of that mission, she and her team have ridden bicycles for thousands of miles across some of the hottest roads in Texas. Dr. Jeannine Hatt was born in East Texas but grew up in Fort Worth. After graduating high school there, she headed to Sherman to continue her education at Austin College. Hatt, who recently retired from her pediatric practice in Denison, arrived in Sherman with not only a desire to become a …

Balfour Beatty Joint Venture Selected for Oak Hill Parkway Infrastructure Project in Austin, Texas

finance.yahoo.com

Balfour Beatty has been conditionally selected, in joint venture with Fluor Corporation, to deliver the Oak Hill Parkway infrastructure project on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The design-build project will reconstruct and widen US 290 from approximately the east end of Circle Drive to Loop 1 and SH 71 from US 290 to Silvermine Drive in Travis County, west of downtown Austin. …

… Additional project components include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the entire corridor, cross-street intersection improvements, U-turn lanes, upstream water detention to reduce potential floods, and storm water detention and water quality treatment ponds. The completed scheme will improve safety and reduce traffic for one of the most congested roadways in the state. …

As soon as I can muster enough strength to walk 3 blocks to Walgreens I’m gonna buy me some pedialyte. Absolutely cracked myself on today’s ride.

— Preston Glace (@pgglace) May 3, 2020

By my calculation, I drank 1 gallon (~8.5 lbs) of water on the ride, and still arrived home 6 lbs underweight. Do the math. That’s some INSANE water loss 😳

Great Weather to Bike Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2020

Kingwood streets was the focus of today’s bike ride. I began at 1:25 PM and finished at 3:16 PM biking 23.07 miles. A nice bike ride to finish the week with a total of 214.42 miles. Four weeks in a row at 200+ miles and the seventh week out of the last eight. This week required extra effort since I only rode 6 days. May totals 96.42 miles after three days of biking.

5-3-2020 Full Week Bike Rides Summary

Not many bikers out along the route though I did go by a couple of people powerwashing.

I don’t think I could ask for better weather. Low humidity (for Houston, anyway), light wind, and lots of sunshine with upper 80’s. During the bike ride: start 87 (57% humidity, 69.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 9 mph. Finish 88 (58% humidity, 71.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 8 mph. Shorts and a Texas short sleeve jersey was all I needed. More of this next week too.
