About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Creating a path to health, local economic growth for those who like to bike

By DAVID MAY | www.mineralwellsindex.com

Like many mountain biking enthusiasts, brothers Rhett and Will Warren will travel an hour or more – even several hours – to ride a trail. Their efforts to build a local trail will not only keep their outdoor endeavors close to home, but they believe attract thousands of riders, runners, walkers and hikers to Mineral Wells every year.

“People will come,” said Larry Colvin of the Weatherford Mountain Biking Club, who is helping the Warrens develop 4.35 miles of mountain biking trail on the …

Rollingwood officials support Austin grant application to help upgrade Redbud Trail Bridge

By Brian Rash | communityimpact.com

“The primary structure has experienced substructure degradation,” Mayor Michael Dyson wrote in a draft of a letter to Elaine Chao, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. “Factors contributing to the need for replacement include increased traffic loads, steel girders fatigue life, history of scour remediation, narrow traffic lanes and insufficient bicycle/pedestrian paths and roadway shoulders.”

Because Redbud Trail Bridge has a regional impact on the city of Rollingwood, Council Member Wendi Hundley said it would be prudent to …

Transmountain bike lane expected to be closed for more than a year, cyclist urged to find new routes

www.ktsm.com

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Cyclists who are accustomed to traveling the scenic route across Transmountain are reminded to find alternate cycling routes as the roadway undergoes a nine-mile upgrade.

The project, already in progress, includes more than six miles of pavement rehabilitation and nearly 10 miles of cable barrier and guardrail. During the work, traffic will be down to one lane for two-mile stretches at a time in both directions.

Currently, traffic is down to one lane from Tom Mays Park to …

Shifted The Start South For Bike Ride to Hare Cook Road and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 2, 2020

I shifted the starting location south for today’s bike ride to get passed the bridge repair area on W. Lake Houston. The bike ride covered roads I rode but with the different starting location I wasn’t sure how long the ride would be. It ended up at 30.61 miles which put the week’s total at 191.35 miles, putting 200+ miles for the week within reach. The label for today’s ride< “Kings River to Hare Cook Road to Kings River”. I parked the Jeep at the pool on Kings River Drive.

Driving to the pool I passed a biker riding south on W. Lake Houston Parkway headed to the detour over the river. Later as I unloaded the Canyon Endurace from the Jeep he rode by on Kings River Drive. I understand riding south on the shoulder over the bridge but I wonder how he will go back north with the narrower shoulder.

Weather during the ride: start 78 (75% humidity, 69.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 85 (58% humidity, 69.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey, a short sleeve jersey, and shorts. Starting the ride at 9:19 AM the temperature and wind made me think the long sleeve jersey would be necessary but I it was not needed. By the time I finished at 11:37 AM I knew the long sleeve jersey was not needed. While the wind didn’t register that high it was hard pedaling south on Ramsey Road but helpful when I started biking north on FM 2100 to Huffman. It helped me raise my average speed to 15.1 mph. Cutting out the streets in Kingwood allowed to get my average speed to 14+ mph from the start. That way I was not trying to overcome the slower speeds.

FM 2100 construction is getting underway to widen it to 4 lanes from Crosby to Huffman. When I made the right turn from Hare Cook Road onto FM 2100 I was concerned about the shoulder. When I approached Foley Road concrete barriers on the right side of the road began but were far enough to the right to leave space for me to ride. Dirt and construction stuff made for a rough surface at times though. By Stroker Road the barriers ended and the shoulder width widened but in the future riding on FM 2100 south of Spanish Cove will be a problem. Road construction is playing havoc with my routes!

From Huffman to the Kings River Pool was about 6 miles. Biking west on FM 1960 the wind from the south made for hard pedaling whenever the traffic was absent. Once I turned onto Atascocita Shores Drive and to the pool pedaling was easier except for the short climb just before the pool.

A Change In Leadership

Bob Wright | bikehouston.org

BikeHouston announces the departure of Executive Director Clark Martinson. Clark has given us two years of his service as Executive Director. During his tenure, BikeHouston has benefited from Clark’s detailed understanding of bicycle infrastructure, planning issues and processes, and his network of contacts in planning and development. He has long been dedicated to bicycling and bicyclists, and we are confident he’ll continue to make contributions benefiting the cycling community in the years to come. Another month, another milestone. My bicycling has been a daily affair for some time now, and I’ve kept that streak alive. And that has made keeping my numbers consistently up from last year. Spring Biking on the Spring Creek Greenway, Oh the Blue Sky

Texbiker.net Posted on May 1, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMay 1, 2020

For the second time in the last week and a half I rode the Spring Creek Greenway. With the bridge repair to the south I decided the greenway was a good place to go for a bike ride after biking to the north this week. The ride started at 10:55 AM and would last until 2:36 PM traveling 42.75 miles. This time I didn’t ride all the way to I-45 but made the turnaround at Dennis Johnston Park. Below is a summary of all the times I rode the greenway.

5-1-2020 Spring Creek Greenway Bike Rides to Date

A blue sky, 82 degrees, and light wind at the start made for good biking weather. But the wind picked up while I biked among the trees. Weather during the ride: start 82 (53% humidity, 63.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph. Finish 84 (50% humidity, 63.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph gusts 22 mph. I felt warm enough to wear shorts and a short sleeve jersey with sunscreen. I thought the wind increased but it was hard to tell with the trees. I found out when I exited the US59 trailhead to ride back to Kingwood though. Fortunately my direction was generally to the north at that point and it became a tailwind.

Below I stopped at John Pundt Park for a short break to check text messages and a phone message.

5-1-2020 Spring Greenway Pundt Park

Other cyclists passed me on the greenway and the video caught many of them.

The CamelBak Classic came in handy on the ride since the water fountains are covered due to COVID-19 precautions. When I stopped at John Pundt Park on the way back to US59 I overheard another biker talking to her companion about where to get water.
