Bicycle sales are on the rise in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. As more riders hit the streets, it’s important to know how to share the road.
Experts say cyclists should wear lights to warn drivers when riding, both at night and day.
Jesus Mendiola, owner of Trek Bike Service and Gear in Mission, says cyclist also need to find a helmet that fits comfortably and should wear bright colored clothing.
Mendiola says people should ride in the same direction as traffic, on a bike lane or shoulder, and not on sidewalks.

We need your help to create a citywide network of "Slow Streets" during this pandemic to allow safe exercise on neighborhood streets to reduce crowding in parks or on trails.

With the bridge repair to the south I needed a route to the north so I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route starting at 11:09 AM. The bridge repair could last until May 20th but I am hoping the contractor makes quick work of it. I might drive south of the repair location and start biking from there. Today’s ride traveled 34.08 miles pushing April’s total to 910.79 miles. I biked this route 8 times so far in 2020. Ride summaries below.
Weather conditions changed from yesterday’s sunshine. From the start the threat of getting wet loomed with a rain drop hitting me before I rode 100 feet. Wet streets and puddles dotted the route signaling rain preceded me. As I rode north I heard thunder to the east and dark clouds seemed ready to let loose but I made it home at 1:46 PM gritty and soaked from the humidity and sweat but no rain. I glanced down at the Canyon a couple times to see road grit on the chain stays so after finishing the ride I washed the Canyon. Weather conditions as I biked: start 81 (86% humidity, 76.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 20 mph. Finish 76 (97% humidity, 75.4 dew point), overcast, wind S 8 mph. The strong wind faded after I started the ride. At the end of the ride notice the dew point versus the temperature; the air was loaded with moisture wanting to fall on me. Wednesday the overcast and rain should leave making for great biking.
My timing put me biking by Pat’s Donuts a few minutes before closing time but I resisted stopping for an apple fritter. Maybe next time.
Biking through Oakhurst I saw a truck with an Erwin Communications sign and wondered what the driver was looking at. Later at Kingwood Drive and US59 another Erwin Communications truck parked in the grass with a small white tent beside it with a person inside. Again I wondered what was happening. Then on North Park Plaza Drive the third Erwin truck sit in the right lane with blinkers flashing. This time I decided to circle back and ask what they were working. The man said he was surveying for fiber optic cable and when I asked for who he said Verizon. I think this will support Verizon’s cellular 5G network rollout.
Apr. 24–The city of Houston is prepared to ask for major changes in state plans to rebuild Interstate 45 that potentially could scale back the planned widening of the freeway and put a greater focus on transit lanes than making room for more cars.
Getting the Texas Department of Transportation to focus more on moving people than automobiles, city officials believe, could quell some of the rancor over the region’s largest freeway rebuild in decades. …
… and improved pedestrian and bicycle access to those stations and other access points along the freeway. …

Getting to Gene Campbell Blvd. wasn’t a problem on today’s bike ride thanks to the 21 mph SE wind. The hard part was going to get back when I reach FM 1314 and start biking SE to Kingwood. I started the ride at 11:11 AM on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. The weather was good but with the wind a little chilly at times. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey which felt comfortable. What I really needed was extra leg muscles to power me through the headwind.
So far in 2020 I rode this route 5 times. Today’s ride is similar to my previous times. 4 of the rides I used my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and 1 ride was on my Lynskey R300 bike.
Weather while I biked: start 81 (62% humidity, 67.0 dew point), partly cloudy and breezy, wind SE 21 mph. Finish 82 (61% humidity, 67.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph gusts 25 mph.
I built my average speed up to 14.5 mph when I turned into Porters Mill from Gene Campbell Blvd. So far the wind helped me but I knew as I exited Porters Mill the pay back was coming at FM 1314. At FM 1314 my average speed was 14.4 mph at 21.4 miles into the bike ride. When I got to Old Sorters Road and left FM 1314 my averaged had fallen to 14.1 mph due to the headwind. My legs weren’t big enough to overpower the headwind. On FM 1314 when a big truck passed me going in the same direction it suck the wind with it for a few seconds giving me some relief. I looked for more trucks but they didn’t pass very often.
Making the right turn from FM 1314 onto Old Sorters Road I got some relief from the wind by changing direction and the trees on my left. I picked up the speed some but the wind waited for me to come out in the open farther south on Briar Berry Lane. Making my way through Oakhurst provided some wind breaks too. The wind kept attacking whenever I came to open areas but a tailwind helped me a short distance on the frontage road after making the u-turn at Kingwood Drive. From my pace slowed as I entered Kings Manor and then Kingwood. My tired legs managed to get to the finish at 2:12 PM.
April mileage now stands at 876.71, the highest month so far this year and second to last July’s 958 miles. Tomorrow the weather forecast looks promising for biking and adding more miles to April.
