About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The pictures of people crowding our trails and parks this weekend are scary. How do we have less than a mile of bike/ped streets when other cities are working with 18 plus mile networks and what can be done to change that?

Big Week, Big Month of Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on April 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 26, 2020

Other than biking to the north when I started at 1:54 PM I wasn’t sure what streets or roads I bike on. Starting in Kingwood I rode to Royal Brook, Country Colony and then transitioned to Ford Road. Staying on Ford Road all the way to US59 and then north to Community Drive I decided to label today’s route: “Kingwood – Community Drive – Valley Ranch”. I looked at previous rides to see if I rode this particular route before and couldn’t find any. With the road repair work to the south I will be biking more to the north than usual.

The weather was fabulous: start 81 (36% humidity, 51.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph. Finish 83 (37% humidity, 54.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 6 mph. My choice of attire: shorts and a short sleeve jersey. With the gentle wind I didn’t really fight it. Pedaling the Lynskey R300 moved me through wind empowering me to get my average speed up to 14.2 mph. The powerwash bug infected more people today along the bike ride.

I checked my weekly biking miles as far back as 2017 to see if I biked more miles in a week than this week’s 262.12 miles and none came up. Today’s 26.35 miles put me beyond my previous week totals. April totals 839.28 miles, the highest month since July 2019.

Pearland bike shop sees business boom during coronavirus

By Haley Morrison | communityimpact.com

While some businesses have slowed or closed in the face of the coronavirus, other businesses, including Pearland Bicycles, are experiencing their busiest time yet.

“We have definitely seen an uptick in business. We are working on everything right now,” Pearland Bicycles owner Daryl Catching said.

Pearland Bicycles sells bikes and bike accessories and also offers bike repairs.

Prior to Gov. Greg Abbott’s order allowing nonessential retail to resume operations, the store …

Bikes are the new toilet paper: WF Bike shops see increased sales

By Tila Grant | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) – Shelter-in-place orders have wreaked havoc on businesses across the country, but Friday News Channel 6 looked at one industry that will come out unscathed.

“We’ve actually seen when I anticipated that we would actually see a slowing in sales, with everyone having to be shelter in place, but when they said to go outside and be active, we’ve seen a pretty significant increase in just in sales and service,” said Sean Brown, Endurance House manager.

The Bike Stops owner, with more that 50 pre-sold bicycles coming in this week, said they’ve been busy ever …

First of all, I was very happy that Skokie said that he & Cianci would ride with me this morning! As today is the fourth year “anniversary” of me re-meeting Oliver the combine, I knew it would be challenging to get a picture of Jeff next to the combine. However, he turned left on Hein Rd instead of right on Cravey. After that, I overheard Mark say something to Jeff about the bat tunnel. Jeff knows that this is essentially my favorite loop to ride, and he had secretly planned to do this as a gift to me. I am very thankful for The friendship of both of these wonderful men. Glad my Wahoo ELEMNT Roam worked flawlessly again, but most of all, thankful beyond believe to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that I am able to do this, and do it safely and strongly.

Other Cyclists Along the Ride to Huffman and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on April 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 25, 2020

I didn’t start today’s bike ride as early as I wanted with wheels down at 9:55 AM as I waited for the temperature to get above 70 degrees. The bike ride for today followed what I call the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route with the intent to shorten the time to get to FM 1960 at Lake Houston. I like to see other cyclists and getting sooner on Saturday morning improves my chance of seeing them as come from the east. Today I saw several but if I had been there earlier I suspect more would have passed me.

Weather for the bike ride was good if a little cooler than I prefer: start 74 (64% humidity, 61.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 14 mph. Finish 78 (50% humidity, 57.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 15 mph. To combat the chill I wore a long sleeve jersey under a Texbiker.net short sleeve jersey. The wind direction from the north helped me get to FM 2100 but I expected to work harder to get back to Kingwood. It turned out to not be as hard as I feared.

Today I skipped the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail on the return leg to Kingwood resulting in a total of 32.72 miles. The total for the week now stands at 235.77 miles, the highest week in 2020 so far. My April total is 812.93 miles, just 13 miles short of last month’s 826 miles. I should add to both totals with Sunday’s bike ride if the weather forecast turns into reality. With 4 potential biking days next week April could reach 900+ miles. I never biked that many miles in April. A summary of the times I rode today’s route in 2020.

4-25-2020 Summary of Rides Atascocita Huffman Walden

Starting Monday bridge repairs close the northbound lanes of W. Lake Houston Parkway over the San Jacinto River. My choice of routes will be limited because of the traffic detouring northbound to the southbound bridge. Biking south might be okay but riding north will not with no shoulder and the walk/bike trail closed on the northbound bridge too. The southbound bridge has a walk/bike trail but the entrance and exit are blocked by brush on the north and brush and trees on the south. I sent an email to our city councilman, Dave Martin, requesting the brush and trees be cleared but I don’t know if it will happen.
