About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pedaling for power: 3,042-mile bike trip cut short

by Becky Pritchard | www.mdislander.com

BAR HARBOR — The plan was simple: to bike 3,042 miles through eight states, from San Diego, Cali., to St. Augustine, Fla. Three friends from Mount Desert Island, Auria Mauras, Noreen Hogan and Mary Raikes, left San Diego on Leap Day, Feb. 29, to start their adventure. …

… “We went to Walmart,” Mauras said, “and we saw an aisle of toilet paper with a security guard.” In Texas, they saw an empty truck-stop diner that was only open for takeout.

Brewster County in Texas is where they began to run into trouble, as Mauras described in her travel blog. The three friends arrived in Alpine, Texas, on March 31, after the county had issued a travel ban. They were denied a camping spot at an RV park, so they tried a hotel.

The hotel employee wasn’t sure whether to allow them to stay or not, so he …

Is this an anti-ped facility change?

I’m having a hard time following this article. Is this a case of making things worse for peds to make things better for cars? Seems like it.

I don’t think so, looks like a benefit for both cars and peds. This is giving auto traffic a second way to go south on Lamar from the Highland area, currently most cars go down to W St Johns and turn left there. This proposal would help reduce the left …

And Just Like That… More People Cycling… On Local Trails.

By RidingAgain | austinmountainbiking.com

It was happening before this pandemic and its lockdown… And is happening even more now. So what will things look like after it all gets back to some semblance of normality? I’m thinking some will stop riding; maybe even a large majority. But I’m also thinking that some will have discovered how great trail riding is, and will stick to it. Meaning… Even more riders on local trails.

Yesterday evening while …

Blueberry Crisp Picnic at Ramsey Road

Texbiker.net Posted on April 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 24, 2020

For the third time this year I rode the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. I thought I rode it more than three times but the computer says no. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX rolled out the driveway at 11:13 AM. A summary of the three rides in 2020.

4-24-2020 SportTracks Route Summary for 2020

When I got up this morning the temperature was a chilly 56 degrees. When I made a run to the Walmart for groceries I felt it getting warmer and by the time I began the ride it was 84. I am liking the warm weather and blue sky. What the weather was like while I biked: start 84 (62% humidity, 69.9 dew point), fair, wind S 14 mph gusts 21 mph. Finish 88 (55% humidity, 69.4 dew point), fair, wind S 15 mph. The wind fought me most of the way to Ramsey Road but with the temperature I almost didn’t mind. Shorts and a short sleeve jersey was just right with sunscreen on my arms.

Biking 37.65 miles today meant another 200+ mile week with 2 potential riding days left. The week’s total: 203.05 miles. This might be the most miles in a week since the middle of 2019. April stands at 780.21 miles. I should beat March’s 825.78 miles and maybe get to 900+ miles.

A few other bikers crossed my route with me catching many of them with the GoPro. Watch my video for highlights from the bike ride.

Saturday’s weather forecast calls for a repeat from today.

Blue Sky With Wind on Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2020

This is the first time in a long time that I rode three rides over 40 miles in a week. Today I decided to ride the Spring Creek Greenway for the first time this year. Today’s bike ride covered 47.0 miles. I was surprised that it took me to April to ride there. I started out at 11:06 AM riding the Lynskey R300 bike on its first time on the greenway. The last time on the greenway was December 26th, 2019 but not the entire trail. My past bike rides on the greenway. I can’t remember taking my GoPro while biking the greenway so today’s video may be a first. Its longer than my usual videos because there was much to see.

After yesterday’s gloomy weather today was the opposite. Unfortunately an area north of Huntsville and Livingston suffered tornado damage last night. I left the long sleeves at home and wore shorts with a short sleeve jersey. Thank goodness the trail moves among many trees which kind of blocked the wind. Getting to the trail’s end required fighting a headwind while I got a push to return home generally from a tailwind. Weather was great: start 82 (47% humidity, 59.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 16 mph. Finish 84 (42% humidity, 58.2 dew point), fair, wind NW 14 mph gusts 23 mph.

All the benches and shelters were surrounded by yellow or red barrier tape. At Jesse Jones Park the drinking fountain was covered by a plastic bag meaning no water bottle refill for the 9 to 10 mile trip back home. I saved some water in case that happened but when I got home I ordered a CamelBak for future rides as the heat increases. I don’t want to stop for water or ice during a ride.

Numerous people walked, rode bikes and few joggers populated the greenway’s 17 mile route but not enough to make distancing a problem.
