About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Skedaddle From Sporadic Mist Roman Forest Blvd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2020

After two back to back rides over 41 miles I dialed it back with a shorter bike ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route of 33.25 miles. The bike ride began at 11:04 AM, a somewhat earlier start time. This route covers roads I ride frequently but not in this combination. Checking my riding history I found these rides on the same route.

4-22-2020 Summary of Bike Rides New Caney Roman Forest Blvd Oakhurst

An overcast sky held the temperature back to 75 degrees but the wind did not hold back blowing from the SE at 13 mph shifting to the south by the 1:39 PM ride finish and adding 1 mph. At times biking back to the south from Roman Forest Blvd into that headwind required committed pedaling. Overall weather during the bike ride: 75 (92% humidity, 72.5 dew point), overcast, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 79 (89% humidity, 75.1 dew point), overcast, wind S 14 mph. Sporadically a light mist fell raising my concern about getting home without getting soaked but I made it. As I rode through Oakhurst the overcast sky brightened a little letting the sun break through for a few seconds. From there to the finish the mist disappeared. Because of the lack of sun I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve Ohio State jersey thinking it might be chilly.

Not much happened along the route until I came to Community Drive and the Grand Parkway. I didn’t get close enough to see the details but at least two fire trucks with red lights flashing blocked the southbound frontage road. I was on the northbound frontage road until I went east on Community Drive. When I returned to the general area riding south the trucks were gone or at least the red lights were before I turned onto Valley Ranch Parkway.

With today’s ride the week totals 118.4 miles and April stands at 695.56 miles. Year to date shows 2237 road miles and 542 Zwift miles for a total of 2779 miles. The closest year to 2020 is 2017 which stood at 2157 miles on this date. 2017 did not include any Zwift miles.

El Paso’s walking and biking trails to open up – with social distancing required

By JC Navarrete | kvia.com

EL PASO, Texas — The state of Texas has officially begun taking steps to slowly reopen as the state continues to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

While many state parks are beginning to reopen, El Paso will not see the Franklin Mountains or Hueco Tanks reopen locally. Statewide others will remain closed as is the case with the Big Bend National Park. Mayor Dee Margo says the reason those will remain closed is because of the strain mountain rescues place on resources.

"The reason they have not been open yet is because in the two weeks prior to the stay at …

Where to Get Outside While Social Distancing

PAM LEBLANC | www.texasmonthly.com

I travel Texas so much that when I wake up some mornings, it takes a few seconds for me to remember where I am. Camping in Big Bend? Holed up in a cabin in the Piney Woods? But when the coronavirus pandemic hit the state in March, six upcoming spring trips were wiped from my calendar. Like most everyone else, I stayed home.

As I found ways to exercise outside in Austin while sheltering in place, I discovered that adventure still awaits, no travel required. Just find a spot close by with room to roam. State parks are a great option if you live near one; although they were …

10 Pros and 10 Cons of Coronavirus Bicycling

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

I cannot remember a lot about the time I think we’ll start calling B.C. — Before Coronavirus. It wasn’t that long ago in late February and early March when times were pretty good, if not care-free amazeballs with wonderment and splendor. We could shake hands, hug people, go to restaurants, and ride our bikes in gangs. Now we’re wearing masks, avoiding each other, eating canned food, growing our hair out and getting cabin fever. Be that as it may, life goes on, but it’s hardly recognizable in many ways. Bicycling is still allowed here in …

Sunset Limited, First 2020 Liberty County Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 21, 2020 by Rick AnkrumApril 21, 2020

Ventured to Liberty County on today’s bike ride. I don’t often ride in Liberty County but on today’s route “May Park Community Center – Huffman” I rode about 200 yards into the county before making a u-turn on FM 1960 to begin the trip back to Kingwood. October 9th, 2019, was the last time I rode this route. Not sure why it took me so long to ride it again but I will blame it on time, weather, and forgetfulness.

I began the ride at 11:41 AM as the temperature reached 80 degrees at my home weather station. The sky started to clear making for a great day to ride a bike. I chose the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike to travel today’s 41.89 miles (6/10’s of a mile farther than October’s ride). How the weather looked while I biked: start 80 (75% humidity, 71.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 7 mph. Finish 85 (58% humidity, 68.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 7 mph. My choice of clothing: shorts, long sleeve jersey (didn’t need it but I wore it anyway), and a short sleeve jersey.

Bike rides in this direction seem to be harder to get my average speed above 14.0 mph. I think there are more starts and stops plus not many long uninterrupted stretches. Once I got my average to 14.0 mph I held it there until returning to Kingwood. I made one stop during the ride for ice at the store at the corner of Wolf Road and FM 2100. Now that temperature is warming up one water bottle doesn’t last the ride. I tried to be careful of what I touched going in and a store employee opened the door to let me out.

My timing was good to be biking east on FM 1960 when the Amtrak train passed. Watch the video to see more highlights from the bike ride.

4-21-2020 SportTracks Bike Ride Summary

2020 biking outpaces any previous year so far. I think the primary difference is the Zwift miles. Prior to this year I rarely rode indoors during the winter. This chart shows 2020 versus previous years.
