About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking Sunday Afternoon With Many People Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on March 29, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 29, 2020

After getting home from church where I worked video cameras for the online worship services I took a few minutes before getting ready for the bike ride. Wheels rolled at 1:40 PM under a mostly cloudy sky. The temperature inched up to 81 degrees after falling to 52 during the early morning. The 10 mph NE wind would make pedaling hard at times but not too hard. I optimistically wore a short sleeve jersey and shorts knowing as the miles and time passed my body heat would offset the wind chill effect.

Riding the Lynskey R300 bike I shift gears more frequently than the Canyon Endurace. Finding a comfortable speed and gear combination took about 9 miles settling on the big ring up front and the middle gear in the rear. This okay except for long stretches of headwind when my speed dropped a couple of mph. But the headwinds didn’t last long allowing me to slowly build my overall average speed up to 13.9 mph. This lasted until I returned to Kingwood. Back in Kingwood the stops and turns eroded the average speed.

Today’s route came in at 26.99 miles (why didn’t I ride another 60 feet?) finalizing the week’s total at 227.75 miles, the highest week so far this year. March’s total moved to 807.25 miles, the highest month since last July. With two more potential biking days left I can add to that total. A summary of the weeks and March. Third week in a row of 200+ miles.

With the social distancing and stay at home orders many people were outside. Some cyclists, walkers, children playing soccer, people working in their yards. No village swimming pools in use though.

Here are some hiking, biking trails in San Antonio

Author: Sue Calberg | www.kens5.com

There are also park police officers and trail stewards on patrol to make sure everyone is following the rules.

SAN ANTONIO — Even though the city closed playgrounds and sports courts Friday night, there are still plenty of outdoor places to play, safely.

The city has more than 70 miles of fully accessible hike and bike trails.

It’s called the Howard W. Peak greenway trails system and these beautiful linear parks can be found in many areas of town.

Was an awesome perfect ride until… first my tubeless flatted, sealant was dried up and worthless, then first tube pinched and flatted, then a seal inside my co2 tool blew out, which made me think I was going to be deaf and it was our last one.. so, uber! My driver was wearing a legit gas mask.. Crazy day.

Check The Battery Before The Next Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 28, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 28, 2020

Today’s bike ride was so awesome I started twice. The first start came at 9:01 AM and last a couple of minutes until I tried to turn on the GoPro camera to find the battery was dead. A quick turn around back home to replace the battery and start number 2 with no problem this time. On Saturday’s I try to start early enough to catch some cyclists on the east side of Lake Houston as they ride back to Atascocita or other points. With the COVID-19 safe distance in effect I wasn’t sure if any of them would be out biking. Not to worry, while the number wasn’t as many as some Saturdays other bikers passed by.

To get to the east side of Lake Houston and not miss them I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route which goes to Huffman before Walden.

Today’s ride went 32.22 miles bringing the week’s total to 200.76 miles, the third week in a row at 200+ miles. I plan on biking tomorrow to increase the week’s total and not just squeak over the 200 mile mark. March now totals 780.26 miles and year to date stands at 1533 road miles and 505 Zwift miles. This is the most miles I ever biked this early in a year by 522 miles. 2017 was the best year prior to 2020 at this point in time. I surpassed October 2019 miles, the highest month since July 2019.

Many people along the route walking and jogging. Families and individuals.

Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (90% humidity, 71.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph. Finish 81 (74% humidity, 71.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 10 mph. Because the of the lower temperature at the start I added a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. This kept me comfortable with the wind chill effect. The upper 80’s spoiled me the last few days.

(Long) Road to NAHBS 2020 – Teaser interview w/ Revel Bikes (and wheels)

By Greg Kopecky | bikerumor.com

Our readers love the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, and so do we. That’s why we were all saddened to learn of its postponement due to the COVID-19 virus.

What to do? The show has been rescheduled to August, but we still have plenty of great NAHBS content to share with you. We’re going to have our usual series of pre-NAHBS interviews to put the spotlight on a handful of our favorite builders – and will start sharing these stories NOW, when the original show was scheduled to begin. Economic times will be tough for us all, but perhaps even more so for small independent businesses. Thus, we feel it is our duty to help promote these builders, and keep the excitement going all …

Lucy Park Enchanted Forest Mountain Bike Mud Bath

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

I had sheltered in place for almost an entire day, voluntarily, as doing such is not yet mandatory at my location, though mandatory sheltering in place is being discussed today by those in charge of deciding such things for the people who live in Wichita Falls.

So, whilst still being able to exit my abode without fear of being in trouble with the mandatory sheltering special police I drove my bike hauling vehicle to Lucy Park to do some riding in this sudden return to summer-like temperatures.

90 something was the high yesterday, cloudy and not quite so hot today.

I figured, what with the return of extreme heat Lucy Park, would have totally …

So I had this pebble pop out of my knee last night. I thought it was a weird scab from a wound that hadn't healed. This was from a crash last year on a gravel road. All this time I thought it was a bone fragment.
