About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tour of Watopia Stage 4 Group Ride Jungle Circuit

Texbiker.net Posted on March 21, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 21, 2020

Hoping the weather would allow me to ride outside around 10:30 AM it became obvious the temperature would not reach 60 degrees. Searching the upcoming events in Zwift I checked off the Stage 4 Group Ride. The route was on the Jungle Circuit so mountain bikes were in order. I went to my garage and looked at my options: the Zwift MTB or the Specialized MTB. I wish there were hard tail bikes too.

Start time for group B came at 12:01 PM with three laps. I thought that meant 3 laps of the same length but it turned out to be an 8+ mile lap and then two 5 mile laps. Total Zwifters signed up for all three groups: 2080. Group B contained 916 of them. Total distance for group B was 18.3 miles and my time was 1:35:27. Total elevation gain was 845 feet with the steepest at 10% for a brief moment. Most of the ride I stayed around 700th position with a jump to 680 a couple of times.

Fortunately this was a virtual ride with lots of dust flying during the early part of each lap. At times it was so thick I couldn’t other Zwifters.

Another feature of the circuit is the suspension bridge. It dips down at the start but riding up the other side is steep. Gearing on the mountain bikes makes building up speed difficult. I saw a few riders on road bikes and I might try that the next time on the Jungle Circuit. I recorded 3 new personal records in Strava, one titled ” Descent – Road to Ruins”. It feels harder to ride in Zwift compared to when I first started. I don’t know if Zwift is harder, the Wahoo Kickr Snap is harder, or I am weaker.

Sunday the weather forecast calls for 79 degrees with a chance of showers at 30%. I need 19 miles to reach 200 for the second week in a row.

It’s all about the bike: McCallum cyclist earns national crowns on journey to world success

By Rick Cantu | www.statesman.com

Eli Husted and his bicycle made a left turn out of his driveway and took a spin around the world.

Husted, a 17-year-old McCallum High School senior, has competed in national road racing cycling events in California, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Wisconsin and Vermont. He has taken his bike to Belgium, Ireland and South Korea. His family watched on YouTube as the latter race took a detour through the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

“He gave a wave to the camera during Stage 5 inside the DMZ,” Jennifer Margolis-Husted said of her eldest child.

On Thursday, Husted took a short ride near …

Parks and Greenways are not closed

STORM South Texas Off Road Mountain-Bikers | www.facebook.com

Parks did contact certain groups that had made large group reservations at their venues to let them know their reservations were cancelled because of the current ban on large groups. This does not in anyway impact solo riding, hiking, or running at parks or along Greenways. Please do your part and pack out what you pack in and maintain a safe distance from other trail users.

With BCycle use on the rise, we need riders to maintain caution more than ever. Wearing gloves when possible, washing your hands before and after each ride, social distancing, and using the @BCycle mobile app to check out bikes (instead of the kiosk) are all musts.

Tour of Watopia 2020 Stage 3 Group Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 20, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 20, 2020

Riding the Tour of Watopia in the rain looked forbidding until I realized the rain was outside and I was inside. My house is a lot warmer than the last time I went Zwifting and sweating heavily it almost felt like biking in the rain. The little red sweat towel on the handlebars was soaked by the time I finished the 14.32 miles from wiping off my arms. Thank goodness for the floor mat under the Blue Norcross AL bike.

Rolling out at 11:01 AM the group was larger and growing. At the finish the count was 952 in the B group, adding groups A and C Zwift totaled 1995 riders. At the finish I was around 722nd position.

The route covered the Volcano Climb with 666 feet of climbing and a short climb of 10% showed on the screen though Strava doesn’t count in the profile. Good thing I didn’t do the shorter A group (10.7 miles) with 3,428 feet of climbing; I would’ve been walking.

With all of the road biking I missed stage 2 but that’s okay. I prefer outside.

The Fine Art of Finessing Follower Features on Strava

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Strava, the fitness tracking app, has been a useful repository of rides, walks, swims and photos thereof, a good source of data, and a fun place to encourage others and to be encouraged. Unlike many social media sites (so far in my experience, and as I’m told), it’s a pretty positive place. This post explores a few of the features relating to followers. If you’re a cyclist not on the app, you may want to consider it, and these tips can help even if you are and may not …
