About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Draft concepts for road and intersection reconstruction, bike paths and public transit improvements were again shared with the public during the second in a series of public meetings Tuesday. The proposal integrates city improvements with planned highway projects including changes to Interstate 30 and Interstate 345, according to the North Central Texas Council of Governments Regional Transportation Council. …

Video: Austin neighborhood becomes ‘Living Street’ for safer play, cycling

by Andrew Freeman | cbsaustin.com

AUSTIN, Texas — A Central Austin neighborhood is evolving, working to limit through traffic and turn streets into safe spots for kids and bicyclists.

Living Streets originally started during the pandemic, but now the city is bringing them back to make neighborhoods like Wooten here more walkable and friendly to cyclist and families.

Amanda Marlin is the mother of three active kids.

“Very active,” Marlin said. “The front yard is full of toys.”

But letting them play outside can be difficult, especially on a street just as active. …

Cycling McAllen Texas: Bicentennial & 2nd Street Trails

Tigerholm | www.youtube.com

How to ride McAllen to do some errands, have lunch and enjoy a 30 mile bike ride. Partial video of trip, this video from the corner of State Highway 107 on Bicentennial Blvd to Northgate Lane to Main Street to Auburn Roundabout to Bicentennial Hike Bike Trail to Jackson Ave to Main Street to Interstate 2 overpass to Uvalde to La Plazza to Wichita to 10th Street to 2nd Street Loop & Trail 2nd Street overpass Interstate 2 and to Trenton Road (and gopro camera battery ran out). Can never quite get a full loop bike ride. Note that I don’t like the Interstate 2 surface intersections, I prefer the 2nd Street and Main Street overpasses. I used to use the Bicentennial overpass, though it had problems and was removed.

Reversed Rhythms: A New Spin on the Atascocita Route

Texbiker.net Posted on March 20, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 20, 2024

I tried to coax a few more degrees of warmth by reversing my typical day. Normally I run errands after my bike ride but today I did the errands first and then rode. To keep that theme going I took my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route and rode as sections as I could in reverse. This resulted in a new route, Atascocita – Huffman – Spanish Cove – Walden. The scenery looks different when I ride the opposite direction. Several places I didn’t remember the last time I rode the reverse. While I tried to coax some warmer temperature I’m afraid that different really work, it was 69 when I started at 1:49 PM and 69 when I finished at 4:56 PM. Riding the reverse direction on FM2100 produced a Strava 2nd fastest time on Huffman to Old Atascocita Rd (3:13).

Preparing for my bike tour at the end of the month I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 with the 700×40 tires on the DT Swiss Endurace LN rims, MTB shoes and pedals. At the start I got a low battery warning on the Bolt computer. It didn’t tell me which battery so I checked the SRAM app and found it was the rear derailleur battery. I substituted a battery from my Lynskey Helix and charged the battery while I was gone on the ride. When I got home another alert came up for the front derailleur battery and I charged it after the ride. At the start of the ride the Quarq powermeter wasn’t connecting to the Bolt computer and I replaced that battery too. Good to get these set before the bike tour and I will charge the derailleur batteries before the tour to be safe.

The overcast sky and 69 degrees kept me chilly during the ride. The long sleeve jersey and wind jacket weren’t quite enough to warm me. Thankfully the wind was only 6 mph.

Austin Bicycle Meals rallies cyclists to deliver meals to Austinites experiencing homelessness

London Gibson | atxtoday.6amcity.com

Since launching in Austin in 2021, the group has grown to distribute ~450 meals per month.

Just under three years ago, Kelly Wourms and his girlfriend were making 50 sack lunches per week in his kitchen to distribute to people experiencing homelessness in Austin. Now, he works with fellow Austinites to distribute ~450 meals per month — via group bike rides.

Wourms, the founder of Austin Bicycle Meals, learned the concept from a group of cyclists in Koreatown, Los Angeles. When he moved to Austin in 2021 (for that same girlfriend who helped him make sack lunches), he decided to launch the same concept in the Capital City. …

Ken Hoffman explains the easy way to ride the 40th anniversary MS 150

Ken Hoffman | houston.culturemap.com

There’s still time and limited space to sign up for the 40th anniversary Texas MS 150 charity bike ride from Houston to College Station, April 27-28. The MS 150 is limited to 13,000 riders, and you don’t want to get shut out. The Texas pedal pusher is the largest, most successful, and money-makingest charity bike ride in the U.S. The goal this year is $9.4 million.

Things have changed for the better – and by better I mean shorter. It was a longer and winding road when I pedaled my first MS 150. …

Mountain Biking at Pedernales Falls State Park: 1 Day to Hit the Best Trails

ByBecky Timbers | /www.twowheeledwanderer.com

On my first visit to Texas Hill Country, I really didn’t know what to expect. I’d heard good things about the mountain biking outside of Austin, but what – exactly – that entailed, I had no idea.

One of my first destinations to ride was Pedernales State Park. I’d booked a campsite for 4 nights as a basecamp and did a big day of riding on my first day there. I think my total mileage was 23 miles but with only about 1,100 ft of climbing (spoiler alert: Texas Hill Country has hills, not mountains).

At first, I didn’t really enjoy the trails at Pedernales, but that was before I got on Juniper Ridge Trail. Juniper Ridge is awesome if …
