About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Spring Brings Headwind Bike Ride to Stroker Road

Texbiker.net Posted on March 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 19, 2020

Spring arrives later tonight and according to what I read this is the earliest time in almost a century. I also read the weather forecast for today and it mentioned the wind would pick up as the day progressed. By the time I started the bike ride at 11:46 AM the wind was from the south at 16 mph. My chosen route, “Stroker Road – Huffman” took me in that direction. Biking east/west was not too bad but riding south was very hard.

When I arrived at Old Atascocita Road and Ramsey Road where I turned south I stopped and checked the wind: from the south at 16 mph with 23 mph gusts. From that spot to Stroker Road where I would turn west was about 2.5 miles. On the bike heading that direction I pedaled hard at 10 to 11 mph. At Peters Road there was a dog leg to the left and then back into the headwind. Near the Stroker Road turn trees on my left slowed the wind some but changing direction had the biggest impact. From there a side wind pushed me to the right as I made my way back to FM 2100. Once on FM 2100 riding north the fierce headwind became a very friendly tailwind. I changed to a higher gear combination and headed to Huffman. I made a brief stop at the Fuel Max store for ice and water and to eat a Clif Bar to replenish what I burned up getting there.

The ride to Huffman went too quickly as I enjoyed the tailwind assist. I hoped the ride west from Huffman wouldn’t be made difficult by the side wind and that held true until the trees and buildings on my left disappeared and the wind open, flat Lake Houston arrived. Biking across Lake Houston with no windbreak protection was almost as hard as riding into the headwind. Occasionally traffic passing on my left interrupted the wind but not for long and biking over the sections where the causeway opened underneath for the water increased the wind even more. Finally the west shore came and not long after a right turn onto Atascocita Shores Drive brought the tailwind back though it had to weave around houses and trees.

Back when I made the shift to traveling north on FM 2100 I changed the combination to big chainring and middle cassette gear to up my speed with the tailwind help. I kept that combination all the way back to Kingwood even when the winds off Lake Houston made it difficult. On the Lynskey R300 the gears are different from the Canyon Endurace. On the Lynskey I find I am using the big chainring combination while on the Canyon Endurace I stay on the small front chainring and making gearing changes just on the rear cluster.

I brought the bike ride to a close at 3:08 PM, almost an hour after heading west from Huffman. I made one stop on Kings River Drive to fix the battery in the GoPro camera which messed up for some reason after changing batteries at the Huffman Chevron. I don’t know why sometimes when I change the battery the camera freezes up until I take the battery out and put it back in.

Not sure about biking on Friday. The weather calls for a front to pass through some time late morning to afternoon and may bring some rain. It may be a Zwifting Friday.

Owner of Handlebar Cyclery wants to make the Katy-Fulshear area more bike-friendly

By Nola Z. Valente | communityimpact.com

Stephen Crewe said he has been passionate about cycling for 25 years.

His passion for cycling led him to open Handlebar Cyclery in the Fulshear area, where he has lived for nearly a decade.

As a serial entrepreneur, Crewe said he identified the fast-growing population and the need for a local bicycle shop, and so he opened Handlebar Cyclery in October 2015.

“Cycling is about being outdoors, having a healthier lifestyle and just having fun,” Crewe said. “It can be competitive, recreational or for fitness. Any way you …

Bike Ride Around Southeast Montgomery County

Texbiker.net Posted on March 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 18, 2020

The bike ride began at 11:40 AM when I pressed the Start Ride button on the Elemnt Bolt computer. I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for the first time since February 3rd, 2020. When I reached FM 1485 and loop under US59 I ride to the NW away from the roads I ride more often. Today I rode 37.13 miles, slightly shorter than February 3rd.

Until around the 11 mile point the sky looked threatening but from there the cloud color lightened up some but when I returned to Kingwood it got a darker shade of gray. Weather during the bike ride: start 76 (84% humidity, 71.1 dew point), overcast, wind S 10 mph. Finish 81 (73% humidity, 71.3 dew point), overcast, wind S 12 mph. Because I felt a little chilly yesterday I dressed warmer with shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. A few times during the bike ride I felt over dressed but overall comfortable.

Stopping at the Porters Mill swimming pool and playground I took a couple pictures showing my social distancing. The bike riders missing in the photos were at the playground to my right about a hundred feet away. One little boy wanted to come closer to me but his companion told him to stay where he was.

Wind was not a factor until I turned left from Gene Campbell Blvd. onto FM 1314 biking SE to Porter. I built up my average speed to 14.3 mph at that point but headwind slowly wore me down and the average speed settled at 13.8 mph by the 2:37 PM ride finish.

The Walmart #7010 Distribution Center on Gene Campbell Blvd was busy with 18 wheel trucks arriving from both directions. I suspect they are working hard to restock stores as the panic buying from COVID-19 empties many shelves. I bought groceries Monday evening getting most of my list items and substituting a few things. Apparently my favorite cereal, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest is not other people’s favorite with enough boxes for me to get my usual 5. Most other cereals were gone.

Weather on Thursday should repeat today’s and biking is on the agenda. My long delayed Fabric saddled was delivered this afternoon by USPS when the tracking website said tomorrow. Maybe COVID-19 affects their computer system?
