After exchanging posts on the Velocomp Forum about how to add my heart rate monitor to the data the PowerPod collects during a ride I started today’s bike ride with a short PowerPod calibration ride. I checked the data from the ride and the heart rate monitor is included now.
The PowerPod collects wind data which other power meters do not. This a significant contributor to effort expended while biking. The wind data shows whether I am riding into a headwind or cruising with a tailwind. In the charts above the blue/white shows the wind. When the blue is below the white I am riding with the wind and when the blue is above the white I am fighting the headwind. The burgundy chart is the heart rate data.
Once the calibration ride completed the “real” bike ride began at 11:44 AM as I set off on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route biking 33.24 miles. I finished the ride at 2:26 PM.
Weather on the way to Huffman and back to Kingwood: start 81 (73% humidity, 71.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Finish 83 (70% humidity, 72.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 23 mph. No long sleeve jersey needed today. I can probably say that each day until Friday when the weather changes back to cool and maybe wet.
In an effort to prolong the GoPro camera battery I switched the resolution to 1080 at 60 fps for today’s video. It didn’t make any difference. Today the battery quit at 2 hours and 8 minutes riding time. What I decided is to change the battery after 2 hours riding time. I have the camera set to stay on all the time so I can record clips without waiting for the camera to power on and then record. I like the 1080 16:9 format and will stay with that.
Biking alone put a safe distance between me and other people for the COVID-19 precautions. Check my Instagram photos for examples of my social distancing today. I will practice more of that on Wednesday’s bike ride.
Speaking of distancing, I think USPS is keeping my new Fabric Race saddle from getting too close to me. According to their tracking information it has been resting at the Kingwood post office since 3/14/2020. I have no idea why they didn’t deliver it yesterday or today.

The temperature dropped 10 degrees from yesterday changing my wardrobe choice to shorts, long sleeve jersey, and short sleeve jersey. The bike ride began at 11:25 AM and finished at 2:09 PM. During that time I biked 37.26 miles boosting my March total to 411.29 miles leaving 249 miles to reach my 660 mile goal.
Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (78% humidity, 67.2 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph. Finish 75 (78% humidity, 67.4 dew point), overcast, wind S 4 mph. Maybe a long sleeve thermal jersey would have been a better choice with the strong wind during the early part of the ride. By the time I made the back to the south at SH 242 the wind slowed which probably accounted for my ability to increase my overall average speed to 14.7 mph. The overcast sky looked threatening on the horizon but rain came.
In the search for longer GoPro battery life during the ride I changed the resolution from 1440 to 960 but the battery lasted about the same 2 hours 24 minutes riding time. Next ride I have it set at 1080 in the 16:9 ratio. Also I have additional batteries. I don’t shot continuously but in short clips as I see something of interest. This almost eliminates editing, either a clip is good or not.
TXDoT is expanding SH 242 from 2 lanes to 4 lanes as I say in the video. Without a shoulder and a barrier this means no biking on SH 242.
Tuesday’s weather may warm up and the chance of rain increases slightly but biking is on the agenda.
Heads up y’all. The word must have gotten out on this park. Buddy Craig got turned away after driving all the way to Colorado Bend to ride on Sat. Not Covid related. There is now a booth at the top and apparently the park had reached both camping and day use capacity. The new norm I’m guessing is to call ahead and/or reserve your spot before heading out. Rangers told him they had to turn away folks from Colorado and Kansas also. And no there weren’t gonna let him park outside the gates and roll in, even though the trails may have been empty. Just wanted to let the community know. …
Not sure of the details or for how long, but if you like to do a lap around the lake and use the Montopolis bridge to cross from the north to the south, you’re probably going to want to head over to Pleasant Valley instead. …
