About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tour of Watopia 2020 Stage 1 Group Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 9, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 9, 2020

At the start of today’s Zwift bike ride all of the pieces were in place as the clock counted down to the 12:01 PM start time. I followed the group but by around mile 1 they went up the road. Some group rides utilize a leader and a fence but not today so the fast Zwifters took off in a cloud of bits.

I settled in around position 335 for a couple of miles until some faster cyclists caught me and moved me back to around the 395 to 400 spot. I rode with S.1 for a while until we separated on a hill, he went ahead of me. Several other solo cyclists came along I took their wheel for drafting purposes and sometimes they took mine. All groups totaled 1231 Zwifters with 526 in my group, “B”. Group A rode 2 laps.

Strava reported I set at least 3 new Personal Records. One segment where I had the second fastest time sported the “Where The Pie Is Baked” name. People can be creative naming segments.

The 18.1 mile route lapped around Watopia not retracing any roads that I could tell. The climbing was modest at 509 feet. I think there was a brief section at 8%. After yesterday’s Zwift ride I aired up the rear tire on the Blue Norcross AL to 90 psi and today it felt slight easier to pedal for watts.

While I rode UPS delivered my new Wahoo Elemnt Bolt computer which I will set up for biking outside tomorrow.

Trio of new bike lanes planned for roads linking North Waco, downtown, riverwalk

By RHIANNON SAEGERT | www.wacotrib.com

Portions of Herring Avenue, 15th Street and Colcord Avenue will be getting bike lanes as part of upcoming city repaving projects.

The city coordinates with the Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization, taking input from local pedestrian and cycling advocates, to incorporate bike lanes or sidewalks where appropriate into roadwork that would be happening anyway. Waco Bicycle Club member Stuart Smith said the three roads up for repaving, and new striping for bike lanes, see a fair amount of bicycle traffic.

“Those are roads that people use a lot and …

Mollie Mims: Rolling through Cleburne

www.cleburnetimesreview.com

If you grew up in Cleburne, you might remember the man who rode his bike on South Main Street sounding his horn and waving at everyone.

I never knew their names but they were a part of my growing up years in Cleburne. Now I know a little more about their lives, thanks to comments on the Facebook page Cleburne Texas History and other research.

Beep! Beep!

“Maybe his name was named Ray” someone typed on the Facebook page. Donnie Adair thinks his name may have been Pete. Larry Money and Thomas Clark said some called him Bubba. …

Tired Legs Zwifting ZTPL.CC CoffeeRide (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on March 8, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 8, 2020

I thought the legs could handle 24.3 miles on this ride but not long after I started they told me not today. Rusty from not doing my Zwift setup at the 12:17 PM start I forgot to plug in my extra keyboard. I got off the Blue Norcross AL bike and plugged in the USB dongle. The group was gone but my tired legs couldn’t have stayed with them even if I went with them. I have not Zwifted with ZTPL.CC before. The leader’s comments during the ride were in a language I don’t know, maybe Polish.

It appears the Baytown YMCA Gator Ride used up more of my leg energy than I thought.

The weather outside was okay to ride but as I wrote yesterday because my new bike computer hasn’t arrived and using my phone is not optimum I will Zwift Sunday and Monday. I did notice that the rear tire on my Canyon Endurace is soft and I suspect the patch I applied on Friday failed. The tube has a bunch of patches so a new tube is the best fix.

Fort Davis to Iraan TX: So glad it’s not raining

Thursday March 5, 2020, 111 miles (179 km) – Total so far: 1,095 miles (1,762 km) Back to better weather! Upper 60s and sun makes for much better riding. And almost no wind too! Stayed on frontage road to I-10 all day today until I made it to the 190 split. Iraan was only 15 from there. The theme for the day was wildlife. I saw more animals today (mostly dead, but hey…) than I have the entire trip so far. The only real encounter with live animals came just before I turned onto 190. 3 wild pigs blocked the frontage road ahead of me. I stopped, took a picture of course, and …

Iraan Tx to Eldorado Tx: Who said Texas was flat?

Friday March 6, 2020, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 1,175 miles (1,891 km) Today was all about the hills. Lots of them! Beautiful weather for a second day was welcomed, not as much the headwinds. Ended up only doing 80 miles and ending up in Eldorado for the night First flat of the trip today. Happened when I stopped for a sandwich and rode into the grass off the shoulder. A giant thorn from a mowed piece of bush went right into the tire. I was setup tubeless so I pumped the tire back up and hopped it would seal… Rode for about …

Next Steps for the St. Johns Bikeway in Austin, Texas

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Last month your faithful cyclist and semi-regular bicycle activist (moi) attended a City of Austin open house. Today they sent out a follow-up notice, and I’m sharing it with you. It has some interesting approaches to making this street safer, but they aren’t a done deal yet. We have to make sure Austin doesn’t give up and cede the road back to cars. Even if you don’t live here, you might find the way they (we) do things here to improve safety for walkers and bicyclists interesting.

Sorry, with coronavirus rearing its ugly head, even leading to the cancellation of South by Southwest for the first time in its 34-year history, I should say …
