About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Looping Harlingen on Loop 499 and FM 509

Texbiker.net Posted on March 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 2, 2020

After not biking yesterday (Sunday) due the high wind (gusts to 40 mph) I plotted a route to bike today. Using RideWithGPS.com I added a few miles to the route biked last Thursday. RWGPS showed today’s route would be about 26.6 miles but actually it totaled 23.27 miles. I think I followed the route except near the end when Shafer Street deadended rather than going all the way to Ed Carey Drive. Across a big ditch and field I saw where I wanted to ride but made the only choice, a left turn onto a pothole riddled Whalen Road taking me to the frontage road along US77/I-69E.

To add a few tenths of a mile to the ride I turned into Lowes, rode through the parking lot, then to Ed Carey Drive meandering through some business’s parking lots before crossing Ed Carey to ride back to the frontage road.

Today’s weather is why I decided to stay a couple of extra days after biking the Jalapeno 100 Saturday: start 75 (76% humidity, 67 dew point), overcast, wind S 18 mph. Finish 83 (59% humidity, 67 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 23 mph. While the was strong it wasn’t that different from what I experience back home. I dressed lighter: shorts, long sleeve jersey (more for sun protection), and a Texbiker short sleeve jersey.

I don’t know which is tougher to bike, chip and seal road surface or strong wind. Today I got the chance to ride both at the same time on some roads. Loop 499 mostly consists of smooth asphalt with short segments of rough road. Grimes Road started smooth but about halfway to FM 509 it turned rough. FM 509 again began smooth but as I approached Business Route US77 it got bumpy. The Whalen Road put the previous rough roads in the smooth category with potholes, worn patches, mounds of asphalt patches. Fortunately Wahlen Road was short.

Starting at 10:35 AM traffic on the frontage road was light and so were the other roads. I finished at 1:23 PM. This wraps up biking in Harlingen for now. Back to Kingwood and Saturday I bike the Baytown YMCA Gator Ride. I hope the wind is calm and the temperature warm.

The Trailist: Devil’s Den Trails Expand Mountain Biking on Leon Creek

by Brendan Gibbons | therivardreport.com

With new trails opening every year along the City’s greenway trails, there’s never been a better time to be a mountain biker in San Antonio.

The latest of these trails to make their debut are at Devil’s Den, a formerly trashed-out spot on the Leon Creek Greenway on San Antonio’s West Side that until recently had been mostly used for partying, off-roading, and illegal dumping.

People have also been mountain biking at Devil’s Den for years, but the recent trail …

Houston Half Century

Aaron Russell | rando12051.com

In which the author rides around Houston on bike trails for 50 miles and takes a lot of photos.

Houston, Texas is not known for being one of America’s bike-friendliest cities; it struggles to reach “bike-neutral” on a good day. Hell, it’s not even really “car friendly.” Houston drivers are notoriously hostile toward—or oblivious of—any other moving thing on or near the road, and spend more than their fair share of time driving drunk. When I moved here, I spotted a thread on the r/houston subreddit asking “What items have you had thrown at you during road rage incidents?” (Responses included loose change, a measuring tape, and a snow cone.)

A person I met at a party soon after arriving in town told me that Houstonians frown on public transportation and that “we don’t really like cyclists here.” Or …
