About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

US Route 66 and a bit…

By Bob Gulliver | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 27: Groom to Amarillo Thursday October 10, 2019 If our tent’s waterproof rating was being tested by the sprinkler system last night, its ability to stand up to strong wind was tested this morning. When we went to bed the breeze was blowing in from the south and the air was warm. This morning the strong wind was blow hard from the north and it was cold, bloody cold. …

Day 28: Amarillo to Midpoint Friday October 11, 2019 Apart from the occasional rattle on the garage door by the wind and hoot from Ivor, the night passed peacefully. As Adam had set breakfast at 7am our alarm clock was set at 6:45am, which was about 5 hours earlier than our bodies would have liked. Even inside the garage inside the tent the air outside of the sleeping bag felt very cold. The forecast was for overnight temperatures to have dropped to -4oC or less, so pulling down the sleeping bag zip seemed the most illogical thing to do. …

Day 29: Midpoint to Tucumcari Saturday October 12, 2019 For sleeping in a tent on the spikey ground a few metres away from a busy interstate, even Deborah admits that it was one of our better night’s sleep.

As we should not have been camping at the picnic area without permission, with a hefty fine if we got caught, we had set the alarm to go off at 5:45am. When the alarm did go off it was quickly changed to 6:45am. At 6:45am if was turned off altogether and we eventually started to mobilize at our usual time of 7:15am. …

Bike Ride to Roman Forest Blvd Trying Out Favero Pedals

Texbiker.net Posted on February 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 24, 2020

After giving a first ride with the PowerPod V3 yesterday I changed to my Canyon Endurace for the first ride with the Favero Assioma UNO power meter pedals. The weather was supposed to warm up to 78 but during the bike ride it never got that warm. Thankfully I dressed for 69 to 71 and stayed comfortable during the bike ride.

The Assioma pedals were super easy to setup. After about 10 to 15 turns of the crank power readings started showing up on my Elemnt computer. The UNO is on the left pedal only which is enough for me. I bought them directly from Favero Electronics in Italy. It took about a week to get to me via FedEx. This saved about $100 from buying in the US. After I installed the pedals on the Canyon Endurace in order to activate them I installed the app on my phone, spun the crank a few times to turn the pedal on, searched in the app for the pedal. Once the app connected to the pedal I filled information about me and the bike. Before riding I calibrated the pedal and that was it. The hardest part is getting used to the Look style cleats and clipping into the pedals. After many years of Shimano pedals and cleats the movement is different. Look at the power curves at my Strava activity page or the SportTracks activity page. The Wahoo phone app has charts on about every aspect of power: power, pedal smoothness, torque effectiveness.

Ride marks Houston’s 100th B-Cycle bike station

R.A. Schuetz | www.houstonchronicle.com

Monica Coker has her own bicycle. But for a social bike ride starting with brunch in the Heights and stopping for beer off of Washington Avenue, she borrowed a cycle from the bike-share nonprofit Houston B-Cycle.

“It was much more convenient,” she said.

Two dozen cycling newbies and regulars gathered Sunday morning for Pedal and Pints. While some brought their own bikes, others borrowed from Houston B-Cycle, which on Monday will celebrate its 100th city bike station, a kiosk where people can check out and …

Decisions, Decisions! Which Bike To Ride?

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 23, 2020

After Zwifting the previous four days today the weather warmed up to 65 degrees and I went for an outdoor bike ride. My first decision was which bike to ride. The Canyon and Lynskey both sported new power meters and I was anxious to try each one out. I chose the Lynskey R300 for today as I set out on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. The ride went 27.99 miles (I thought I rode 28.00 but the Elemnt computer must’ve rounded up).

I installed a new PowerPod V3 power meter on the Lynskey. I used the Isaac program to set up the new PowerPod but a calibration ride finalizes the setup. Carefully reading the instructions I started the ride at 1:22 PM and about 100 yards into the ride I stopped and pressed the PowerPod’s stat button. The green LED changed to yellow and as I rode the power reading started counting from 1 to 100. When it reached 50 I stopped as the instructions said and then resumed the ride. When it got to 100 I stopped again and pressed the PowerPod button which blinked green and continued the ride. The power readings began to appear on the Elemnt’s screen and I felt relieved because of my previous difficulties with the calibration ride on my previous PowerPod BLE. I think what I missed before was stopping at 100 and pushing the PowerPod’s button.

Weather during the bike ride: start 65 (81% humidity, 59.5 dew point), overcast, wind S 14 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 65 (82% humidity, 59.7 dew point), overcast, wind SE 14 mph. With no sunshine I selected my “winter” kit: shorts, leg wamers, long sleeve thermal jersey, wind jacket, and half finger gloves. This kept me warm though at the start I felt a little chilly but once the body heat kicked in I started sweating. I delayed starting the ride while I watched the first half of the University of Cincinnati basketball game hoping it would warm up but instead the temperature went down a degree.

I saw some other cyclists along the route. Some of them are in the video but I missed at least one as I came around a sharp corner and he rode by me before I could start the GoPro camera.

Tomorrow I will ride the Canyon Endurace with the new Favero Assiomo power meter Uno pedals . Rain early in the morning but it should stop around 9 AM. I think it will be dry for a 11 AM start.
