About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclists are Being Killed Among San Antonio’s Most Congested Areas, Study Finds

By Katie Hennessey | www.sacurrent.com

San Antonio citizens are processing yet another bike fatality this week, this time a 10-year-old girl who was struck on her way to school early Thursday morning.

Irie Suarez, a fifth grade student at Kallison Elementary, reportedly veered into oncoming traffic before she was hit. Bexar County officials say the weight of her backpack may have caused Suarez to swerve and lose control of steering.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. near …

Challenging All Legs Zwifting Tour of Innsbruck // Stage 2

Texbiker.net Posted on February 22, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 22, 2020

Stage 2 was more than twice as long as Stage 1 but this time I got to go downhill as a payback for riding 4.7 miles uphill. It took me 1:13:30 today to ride 14.58 miles against yesterday’s 1:04:28 to ride 6.83 miles. The difference: today I set the smart trainer to max in Zwift. Yesterday I set it about 50% and the result is the time it takes to ride a mile doubles. Today I was able to pedal up the mountain and my speed stayed above 4 mph, usually 6 mph or above, while yesterday using the same gears my speed dropped to 2 mph at times and sometimes while pedaling my avatar stopped. I think I will keep the smart trainer at the max setting for now.

The number of Zwifters in the 11:32 AM start totaled 1161 in all groups with 706 of those in Group B. I finished in 495th position. First place finisher, J. Hew2489 completed the course in 36:50, averaging 342 watts. Maybe J. should move up to Group A?

The course went up the mountain with total elevation gain of 1598 ft. Sometimes the incline hit 12% with some false flat appearing. Thank goodness for the false flats to give my legs somewhat of a break. I used the lowest gear the Blue Norcross possesses: 36×28. Sometimes my cadence fell below 50 rpm.

Sunday I plan on biking outdoors with the weather warming up into the 60’s.

West Side Art Trail to connect neighborhoods

City News | farmersbranchtx.gov

FBTX – City of Farmers Branch residents and visitors will soon have more transportation options for getting around the city with the advent of the “Westside Art Trail,” a $10.4 million project with construction largely funded by private, county and federal sources.

The 12-foot-wide trail will ultimately wind its way through the new Mercer Crossing development providing a much needed connection from the Campion Trail in Irving to the Farmers Branch DART Light Rail Station area near Interstate 35E and Valley View Lane. With the rapidly growing population west of I-35E between multi-family developments and new single family homes, the new trail will become more valuable in the coming years. This will provide a way to safely …

SAN ANTONIO – Crowds gathered on a bridge off Ranch View East and Remrock Valley to remember a fifth grade student who was hit by a car while riding her bike to school.

Zwift Tour of Innsbruck // Stage 1 Short Distance

Texbiker.net Posted on February 21, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 21, 2020

I knew this stage would be challenging with the distance set at 6.7 miles. The first 2 miles were relatively flat but from that point all the way to the finish the road went up. Sometimes a false flat eased the incline to 1% but several 10% to 12% sections loomed. During the Tour de Zwift one of the stages used the same roads and even longer.

For today’s stage 1308 Zwifters signed up for Group B, the lowest group open to me. Overall 3060 Zwifters registered for 4 different groups. I finished at 881st, 31 seconds behind the person in front and 1 minute 10 seconds ahead of B. Schechter in 882nd. during the ride my position was around 893 to 895 and when riders passed I stayed in the same position. Not sure how that works. Maybe they were Group A Zwifters? The first place finisher in Group B took 19:48. I think he had jet assist.

Today I adjusted the smart trainer settings in Zwift after enabling the Ergo mode on the trainer. At the beginning the trainer was at max which wasn’t too hard on the flat start but once the incline began I changed it to zero which was too easy. I settled on about 1/4 setting. At times I pedaled at 70 rpm and my avatar stood still with watts showing too. I think I will move the setting to 1/2 way for tomorrow’s ride. The weather forecast says it will not reach 60 degrees.

For added interest in the ride before the start I decided to power off my Pixel 3XL phone that runs the Zwift companion app to see if that would fix the heart rate monitor not connecting. The phone froze when it tried to restart with a black screen. So no companion app during the ride. After the ride I found the solution: hold the power button for 30 seconds. The phone started up. Hopefully it works tomorrow.
