About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: 10-year-old girl riding bike to school fatally struck by vehicle

www.ksatr.com/news

SAN ANTONIO – A 10-year-old girl who was riding her bike to school was fatally struck by a vehicle in far West Bexar County, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Ranch View East and Rim Rock Valley in the Valley Ranch neighborhood, not far from Culebra Road.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the girl lost control and veered into oncoming traffic when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle. She was not wearing a helmet. …

Deceased girl’s backpack may have caused her to fall into oncoming traffic, BCSO says

By Taylor Pettaway | www.mysanantonio.com

A car fatally struck a 10-year-old girl as she bicycled to school Thursday morning amid recently built subdivisions on the far West Side, officials said.

The girl, a student at Kallison Elementary in the Northside Independent School District, was riding alone on Ranch View Road at around 7:30 a.m. The weight of her backpack may have caused the fifth-grader to veer off a sidewalk and fall into oncoming traffic less than a mile from …

Cinco Ranch’s Martin has lasting impact on others

By DENNIS SILVA II | www.katytimes.com

Cinco Ranch football, Cinco Ranch softball, the BP MS 150 and Texas A&M sports mean the world to Connor Martin. To those who know and are around Martin, though, the 24-year-old means so much more.

Since 2009, Martin has been a team manager for the Cougars’ football and softball programs. Though he graduated in 2012, he maintains those roles today.

“He’s meant as much to me as I have to him, I promise you that,” said Cougars softball coach Jerry Miller, who recommended to Martin that he join the football and softball teams as a manager in the fall of 2009. “He’s a remarkable young man.”

Martin has been a bagger at Kroger’s the last six years. He landscapes. He helps remodel properties for H2 Builders. He mows neighbors’ yards, and nothing satisfies him more than getting his hands dirty while working with mulch.

The last 10 years, he has ridden the MS 150 bike ride from Houston to Austin, taking advantage of his love of cycling, and he …

Six early-season gravel races to put on your list for 2020

Betsy Welch | www.velonews.com

Across much of North America, spring makes a fickle bedfellow to gravel racing. We found six races where the weather shouldn’t be a problem, but your early season fitness might.

… The International Grand Prix of Gravel Dallas, TX, March 21 Held in conjunction with the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), this event is hosted by Texas’ freewheeling race promoter, the Spinistry. According to the group’s Facebook page, “The International Grand Prix of Gravel is a unique, urban gravel grinder that takes …

The Placebo Effect and Sports Supplements

Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health e-Zine | www.drmirkin.com

… Placebo Effects on Cycling Performance Six highly-fit male cyclists did two time trials with no pills to establish a baseline for each cyclist, and three time trials where they were given pills labeled either "placebo", "4.5 mg/kg caffeine", or "9.0 mg/kg caffeine", at random (Med Sci Sports Ex, Dec 2006;38(12):2159-64). Actually, all of the pills were placebos, with none of them containing any caffeine. Caffeine can enhance performance, so these experienced bicycle racers knew that if they were given caffeine, it could help them ride faster. On all three time trials the cyclists had their power measured on an objective power meter. The cyclists produced: • 1.4 percent less power than baseline when they believed they had ingested a placebo, • 1.3 percent more power when they believed they had ingested 4.5 mg/kg caffeine, and • 3.1 percent more power when they believed they had ingested 9.0 mg/kg caffeine. Furthermore, all of the cyclists reported that they felt benefits from the placebo pills labeled as containing caffeine. …

by Mark Smith | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Zach and Bree Parham of Lantana recently donated a complete Learn-to-Ride Program to Blanton Elementary School, which will help an estimated 500 kindergartners learn to ride bicycles over the next five years.

“We are proud to get more kids on bikes through our donation to the school and support of the All Kids Bike Kindergarten PE Program,” said Zach Parham, president of J&P Cycles. “On behalf of my wife Bree, myself and the dedicated staff at J&P Cycles, we look forward to watching these kids grow to become the next …

Rebuilding a 1999 Cannondale R300 from a clunky triple to a slick street ripper

Dan – the surly biker | thesurlybiker.wordpress.com

It didn’t take long after finishing my last project to get the itch to start another one. So far my stable consisted of a carbon fiber endurance bike, & two vintage Raleighs; one a single speed.

I spend a lot of time following bike profiles on Instagram & Facebook, while also browsing many bike forums of the internet. I started to realize while I loved the look of my vintage road bikes, I also was really starting to love the look of many modern urban & track bikes: wider frame tubes, straight forks, modern stems & wide riser bars.

I certainly wasn’t in the market for a brand new Cinelli – or any new bike/frame to be honest. So I started trolling craigslist, eBay, and FaceBook Marketplace to see what I could find. After about 4 or 5 weeks I came across a Cannondale frame in a nice color that looks like it could fit …

No Car? ‘Art Bike Parade’ Lets Houston Cyclists Get Creative

MATT HARAB | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

“We wanted a way to celebrate the parks, and diversity of Houston with cycling. We also wanted to elevate the city turn from brown to green, and encourage people to have an active and healthy lifestyle”

An upside-down Volkswagen. A giant banana. A sedan decked out like a peacock.

Those are just some of the designs cooked up every year for the city’s Art Car Parade, the annual celebration of mobile creativity in which drivers deck out their cars with colorful, ornate or funny designs and make their way through the streets of Houston.

Now cyclists can get in on the action. …

Zwifting Around Richmond VA in Reverse Halfway

Texbiker.net Posted on February 20, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 20, 2020

Technology is great when it works. For some reason today my Wahoo Tickr Fit heart rate monitor wouldn’t pair with the Zwift companion app on my phone. Of course I didn’t find this out until the start of the ride as the countdown clock went to zero. Standing at the start line as 311 other Zwifters rode away I attempted to get the Tickr to connect. After numerous attempts I switched to using my computer and it found the Tickr almost immediately. By then the Pack was in the distance. For the second Zwift ride in a row I stopped about halfway through the ride at 10.76 miles out of the planned 20.5 miles.

As I rode the course around Richmond in the reverse of the UCI Worlds direction my w/kg continued to not equal the levels of rides before I did the spin down calibration several days ago. Looking at the speed and watts I am beginning to think they are correct and the output before the calibration was wrong. My speed and watts mirror when I ride on the road so maybe there isn’t a problem with the smart trainer. I think I will change the percentage setting in Zwift and see what that does. In the Wahoo Utility app I enabled ERG Mode and in Zwift I set the power to Max. This will probably kill my legs tomorrow. I will try a test ride before joining a group ride.

Bike-to city: Houston expanding avenues for cyclists

by Adam Zuvanich | theleadernews.com

Houston continues to bet big on bikes.

Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis pledged Monday to donate $7.4 million to help complete Bayou Greenways 2020, a transformative public-private project that aims to create 3,000 acres of greenspace along Houston’s watersheds along with 150 miles of connected trails for hiking and cycling. In conjunction with the final stages of the initiative, the Houston Parks Board announced two inaugural events planned for the spring that will showcase some of the recreational space and cater to the city’s expanding bike culture. …

Stopped my excuses and got that indoor trainer

cisbrane | www.bikeforums.net

At the start of 2020 I looked back at Strava and was sad to see how little I rode. Excuses after excuses – too cold or too hot (100F+), too dark out, too early, no time, etc… I managed to maybe ride once a week.

So in January I spent the money on a Kickr Core trainer + Zwift subscription, and it has made an immediate difference in my life. Gone are the excuses above and my cycling fitness is coming back, and I’m overall more happy. I love finding group rides (low D category only) on Zwift as it …

Zwifting ZZRC SUB 2.0 Ride (D) Tick Tock

Texbiker.net Posted on February 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 19, 2020

Some days the legs just lack energy. This was one of those days. The Tock left, leaving me with the Tick. I started out with the group but around 2 miles into the ride I slipped closer to the back of the pack and not too long after that I rode alone. The course was relatively flat but the watts stayed around 100 which put me at 1.2 w/kg and those in front rode at 1.8 w/kg.

I rode with this group before and kept up, even breaking through the fence a few times, but since I did the spin up and spin down on the Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer I cannot keep up. After the ride today I did the spin up spin down again. Tomorrow the weather looks like I will be Zwifting and will have an opportunity to see if that made any difference.

The ride started at 12:40 PM lasting 60 minutes but I stopped at 32:34 after 10.14 miles. I think this is the first time to not complete a ride on Zwift.
