About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Biking News February 18th 2020

Texbiker.net Posted on February 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 18, 2020

Seems like the scene is down around here

Radish_legs | www.bikeforums.net

  1. Texas Cup points competition canceled for 2020. They say it will be back for 2021, in new format. But this is where they kept track of standings for the different events to determine individual and team winners in different categories.
  2. One of the 3 weeknight crits was just canceled due to lack of venue.
  3. The opening circuit race canceled this year due to road closure.
  4. Opening RR/crit/TT of the season. 9 competitors in the 40+.

And you go down the list further and it seems like things are trending down in the North Texas area. Maybe it will bounce back. 50+ is better than 40+ now, my friend’s theory is that the Lance Armstrong effect has now officially aged out and there is no next generation.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Pledges $7.4 Million To Bayou Greenways Project

MATT HARAB | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The funds, which are pending approval by the Harris County Commissioners Court, are intended to help finish up a massive bike trail project linking up the city’s waterways.

Commissioner Rodney Ellis on Monday pledged $7.4 million in funds to help finish up a massive bike trail project linking up the city’s waterways.

Ellis announced the Precinct One partnership Monday as part of the Bayou Greenways 2020 parks project, a plan to create and connect more than 150 miles of trails and 3,000 acres of green space along Houston’s major waterways.

“We want to make sure no matter where you live, no matter how much money you make, it’s a big deal for everyone to have a linear park one and a half miles from …

Dallas Is Falling Far Short of Its Ambitious Goal to Become Bike Friendly By 2021

LUCAS MANFIELD | www.dallasobserver.com

Dallas is nowhere close to fulfilling an ambitious plan to create a citywide network of bicycle lanes.

In 2011, the City Council adopted a plan to create 1,300 miles of bike routes, including bikes lanes, street markings and multipurpose trails, that would promote "wide-spread use of bicycles" in the car-centric city. And it promised to do so by 2021.

But on the eve of that deadline, the city has built barely a tenth of the network. …

Get ready for more bike-shared lanes on roads

by Elsa Malakoff Maxey | www.fortbendstar.com

For about 20-30 years now, cities throughout the U.S. have been into bicycle infrastructure. Sugar Land is no exception with its impressive hike and bike trails.

And for a while now, the city has been working on the expansion of bike network improvement projects. In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that we began seeing dedicated bike lanes stripped with white paint in our neighborhoods. Some of them also did away with the extra lane on signature boulevards. I think those are referred to as streets with excess auto capacity.

While some motorists found it inconvenient since the option to use the …

Curb management: Bicycle Advisory Council takes on cars parked in Austin bike lanes

www.kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — When cyclists come across cars parked in bike-only lanes, it’s not only dangerous for them, but it’s also frustrating for the City of Austin. That’s why the City is enforcing ticketing and towing cars parked illegally.

The Bicycle Advisory Council (BAC) talked about "curb management" on Tuesday night and what it means to the City.

"Even if you think you’re there for five minutes, you know, even if you …

Spring Like Bike Ride To Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on February 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 18, 2020

I dressed lighter today with the temperature at 74 degrees with wheels down at 11:49 AM. The wind let today as well as I biked the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route going 31.81 miles. I rode the Lynksey R300 bike. Still getting used to the different gearing from the Canyon. The Fabric saddle is good but I need a longer ride to see how it does.

Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (87% humidity, 70.0 dew point), overcast with haze, wind S 8 mph. Finish 78 (78% humidity, 70.7 dew point), overcast, wind S 7 mph. I wore shorts, regular long sleeve jersey and a jacket. I felt comfortable even biking over the cooler Lake Houston water. The wind showed mercy on me today. The overcast sky seems to threaten rain during the ride but none today.

At the beginning of the ride the PowerPod went through a calibration ride. I thought once would be enough but it went through twice and then hung at the halfway point the third time. I couldn’t get it to move on and pressed the button many times in different combinations before one worked and the power readings start flowing the Elemnt computer. Hopefully the next ride won’t require this.

The weather changes tonight to wet and cooler so no outdoor biking on Wednesday.

Relaxed Ride with Rhodney: Shoal Creek and Town Lake

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Sunday. A day associated in America with religious services, football, laundry, getting ready for the dreaded return to work on Monday, and driving. The Sunday drive is a relic of days of old, when people would drive about aimlessly while sightseeing and not paying much attention. For many cyclists, a Sunday bike ride is de rigeur. Temperatures in Austin, Texas were forecast to be in the high 70’s. For February, that’s warm. Old friend Rhodney invited me to …

Bike Ride To Tavola With Some Rain and Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on February 17, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 17, 2020

Early in the bike ride I encountered light rain but I pressed on hoping it would leave or I ride out of it. I don’t know which happened but the rain disappeared until I rode through Woodridge Forest on the way to US59. The “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” goes north and the south wind helped me get there. The ride lasted 2:33:48 (moving time) with a start time at 12:15 PM and finished at 3:09 PM. I covered 34.38 miles.

At the beginning of the ride the south wind registered 7 mph but by the time I finished it came from the south at 15 mph with gusts up to 18 mph. This made for hard pedaling after the turn around at Tavola, north of New Caney. The weather during the bike ride: start 73 (87% humidity, 69.3 dew point), overcast, wind S 7 mph. Finish 78 (79% humidity, 71.2 dew point), overcast, wind S 15 mph gusts 18 mph. I over dressed with a long sleeve thermal jersey under a wind breaker jacket atop biking shorts. When I finished the jersey and jacket were wet from sweat. When I rode by Bens Branch Elementary school in Briar Tree their sign showed 81 degrees, starting to get to my kind of temperature. Tuesday’s weather repeats today.

Before the ride I made two adjustments to the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike: raised the saddle to match the Lynskey R300 setting and loosened the cleat tension on the Ultegra pedals to make the unclipping easier. I loosened the cleat tension a quarter turn and with new cleats on the Sidi shoes exiting the pedals felt easier. The saddle height stretched my legs a little farther and I think helped my pedaling power. My leg muscles will need to adapt to the change.

At the beginning of the ride the PowerPod started a calibration ride count up but this time I understood why. I made a change in the profile of my weight which affects the power calculation by the PowerPod. Once the calibration finished the PowerPod began sending power data to the Wahoo Elemnt computer. I did notice the watts were higher than I expected but with the strong wind and a gearing change it looks reasonable. The gearing change in the rear cassette was going from an 11×28 to 11×25. This wasn’t planned but I think the 11×25 cassette puts my speed and power at higher level. Now if I start biking in hilly terrain I may change my mind.
