About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

PowerPod Second Calibration Bike Ride On A New Fabric Saddle

Texbiker.net Posted on February 10, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2020

Yesterday I attempted to download the power information from my PowerPod for the rides on my new Lynskey R300 road bike. But nothing downloaded. After exchanging posts on the Velocomp.com forum with John I learned that the calibration ride from several days ago failed. One of the things about PowerPods is the feedback when setting it up comes from different colors of an LED. My problem is remembering what the different codes mean and then what action follows.

Today’s ride was the second attempt to get a calibration ride to use the PowerPod with my new Lynskey. The sky was overcast and as I walked the bike out the back door I heard rain hitting on the patio cover but not hard. Determined to get the calibration ride I continued out the driveway and got on the bike. As I rolled out the driveway the light rain slowed to almost nothing. I pushed the start button on the PowerPod to begin the calibration process and rode on. The streets were damp but not too wet. The calibration counter started at 0 and when it got to 50 I stopped per the instructions and waited for the LED to signal to begin riding again. When it signaled I started riding again and the count up to 100 resumed. When it hit 100 the count stopped and the PowerPod began sending power information to my Wahoo Elemnt computer, I think. As I write this I have not attempted to download the ride data from the PowerPod.

With the questionable weather I decided to ride on Kingwood streets and not get too far from home. A couple of times light rain fell again but not for long. The ride started at 11:20 and finished at 12:25 not giving the rain too much time to catch me.

Along with the PowerPod I gave a first ride on a new saddle, the Fabric Scoop Race shallow profile with titanium rails. I bought this saddle for the Lynskey R300 to replace the factory saddle after the problem I had with another Fabric saddle when the rails did not fit the Canyon seat post clamp. The Scoop Race felt comfortable during the short ride but I need a longer ride to get a better feel. If it works out I will buy another one for the Canyon Endurace since the rails are round and fit the Canyon’s seat post clamp. The longer ride will probably wait until later in the week due to the weather.

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Today’s post was going to be about an article in Bicycling magazine. But it turns out it’s a re-run of something from September. Then I was going to re-visit my 2019 stats. But since that post went over like a lead balloon, I shelved that for another time (maybe). Then I figured I could provide reportage on the City of Austin opening a 2-mile stretch of Shoal Creek redesigned bike lanes. But I didn’t make it to the gathering, so what to write about? How about a bike ride I did with a cycling friend on Shoal Creek later in the day? Ya sure, ya betcha! …

Humble Lions Club Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 8, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 8, 2020

I got up around 5:20 AM to get ready for the bike ride. After eating breakfast and getting dressed I left home at 6:40 AM for the short drive the start location at Humble ISD Career and Technology Center on Will Clayton Parkway. Arriving a few minutes before 7 AM I found a parking place not too far from the registration tent. I preregistered so it didn’t take long to get my wrist band and number tag for the front of my bike. After that I positioned myself on a route other people would take to register and handed out Texbiker.net business cards giving all that I had away. One person complimented me on the website.

From there I returned to the Jeep and sat inside to keep warm until 7:35 AM. With the 8 AM start that gave me time to get the Lynskey R300 out of the Jeep, put the wheels on and finished getting dressed for the ride. Weather at the start was 53 degrees with a steady NE 7 mph wind helping the wind chill. I dressed for cold with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, regular long sleeve jersey, wind jacket, and full finger gloves. In case it warmed up I put regular gloves in the jacket pocket. Weather like this is normally below my threshold for biking but I like the ride and it is close to home.

4 hour bike ride compressed into 9 minutes 42 seconds

At 8:06 I pushed the start button on the Elemnt computer and prepared to ride onto Will Clayton Parkway headed east into the wind. It took riding to W. Lake Houston Parkway to get my body heat up to counter the chill. On Will Clayton Parkway we rode north. Not too long after riding on W lake Houston I heard a crash just behind me and looked in my mirror to a biker down on the pavement. He jumped back up and got on his bike.

I stopped at the first rest stop to get a cloth for my nose and when I left about 20 feet ahead another cyclist was down on the pavement with his head on the curb. His fall looked more serious. Several people were helping him as I rode by.

I was comfortable riding in the chilly weather but when mile 23 came it started raining lightly. I hoped it would go away and it did after a mile or so but the my legs felt the cold water drops as they came through the leg warmers’ fabric. When I rode out the rain the dampness went away with the help of the wind.

From that point the route was more friendly. I stopped at rest stop 3 and ate several cookies for energy and took another cyclist’s picture for him. I thought the next rest stop would be in Crosby but it wasn’t at the place the map showed. Riding from mile 29 at rest stop 3 to mile 43 where rest stop 4 in Deussen Park waited stretched my energry so at stop 4 I ate more cookies and several cups of Gatorade and rest for several minutes before setting off on the last 12 miles.

The last 12 miles went north into the wind for 7 miles and then turned west for 5 miles where I enjoyed a tailwind to the finish at 12:11 PM.
