About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Biking News February 7th 2020

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 7, 2020

Robson Ranch Rambler — February 2020

www.crosstimbersgazette.com

… Denton City Council Update By Jesse Davis, Denton City Council, District 3 … I hear a lot from my friends and neighbors about the effect of growth in our area. There’s one thing in particular that seems to be on all our minds. It’s the number one thing I hear about when people oppose new development in their neighborhoods. And it happens to be the number one thing people want to see their tax money spent to fix. You already know what I’m going to say—TRAFFIC. …

… In this plan, we also look beyond cars and commuters. More of our neighbors are choosing to walk or bike to work or school. There are also those who don’t own cars, and have no choice but to walk or bike. So it’s only fair that we build a system that is just as safe and efficient for pedestrians and cyclists as it is for the folks in cars. For example, one of my main goals is providing safe sidewalks around all of our schools and major public buildings. …

Houston Cyclists To Drivers: Stop Parking In Bike Lanes

Gail Delaughter | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

In response to a recent story about the City of Austin cracking down on drivers who park in bike lanes, listeners and readers started sending in pictures of violations they’ve seen on Houston city streets. We decided to follow up locally to see what Houston is doing to keep cars and trucks out of the bike lanes. Navigate through the slideshow above and the story below to see some of the photos we received from local cyclists.

Wilson Calvert loves to ride Houston’s bike lanes.

A Midtown resident, Calvert says he frequently uses the new bike lane on Gray Street, and that he can get to downtown destinations a lot quicker than he can in a car.

But other times his …

Harris County park project connects vets with nature to reduce PTSD

By Savannah Mehrtens | www.houstonchronicle.com

For Eric Carrasco, escaping into nature helped him navigate PTSD when he came back home after five years of service in the Marine Corps in 2002.

After realizing the effects of the outdoors, Carrasco started “Operation Yellowbird,” an organization connects veterans for outdoor activities like camping, backpacking and mountain biking. The activities help Houston area veterans get a chance to break away from their struggles, he said. …

Bikes central to commerce at M-K-T Heights development

Katherine Feser | www.houstonchronicle.com

Two wheelers rather than 18 wheelers will help drive the commerce at M-K-T Heights, a mixed-use redevelopment along North Shepherd Drive at 7th Street that aims to capitalize on its setting between two hike and bike trails.

Radom Capital and its partners have added a Houston BCycle bike share station and signed Pedego Electric Bikes as a tenant in the project, which will transform five concrete industrial buildings into a collection of creative office spaces and about 40 shops, restaurants and fitness tenants. …

Preparation and Wind Chill Test Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 7, 2020

After finishing the Tour de Zwift today I took a real bike ride outside. Leaving home at 11:49 AM I decided to bike what I call the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. This route goes to the north and then turns back to the south. Today I biked 31.28 miles putting the week at 119.06 miles and the month at 165.61 miles. These totals include Zwifting and road miles. My goals for February: 345 road miles and 100 Zwifting miles. The breakdown so far: Zwifting 28.2 miles and 137.4 road miles. I finished the ride at 2:19 PM.

I wanted to get this outdoors bike ride in to prepare for tomorrow’s Humble Lions Club bike ride and get more riding time on the Lynskey R300 road bike. My Canyon Endurace bike is at a LBS getting a tune-up after almost 15,000 of riding (new chain, new rear cassette, grease bearing, adjust shifting, etc.). Once it is back I will alternate between the Canyon and Lynskey for variety.

Weather during today’s bike ride: start 69 (32% humidity, 37.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 71 (34% humidity, 41.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 12 mph gusts 20 mph. While the sun dominated the sky the wind chill and strength tried to control me. I dressed to combat the chil with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and regular gloves. Fighting the wind on the return to Kingwood meant wind chill and pedaling through the 20 mph gusts. Whenever the road turned east the tailwind gave me time to recover for the next bout of headwind. Once I reached the Kingwood Drive u-turn the wind became less of a problem. I hope the wind lets up for tomorrow’s ride. I made my wardrobe choices for tomorrow.

It’s Snowing in Austin, and It Is Winter in America

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Snow fell from the cold, dark skies on my bike ride home from the gym. The frozen precipitation is rare in Central Texas, especially in relatively mild winters like we’ve been having. So it’s a wondrous sight when it does snow. I felt lucky to have been outside riding when it came down. Light, white, wet kisses on my face melted quickly. Some accumulated on car hoods and lawn chairs, and the roommates and dogs were happy to see and feel it, too.

Of course in other places, there are no romantic notions about snow, because they’re drowning in it and shoveling it by metric ton. Another substance is …

4,900 Miles Later, This Cyclist Has Biked Every Single Street in Austin

by: Kathryn Hunter | texashighways.com

The final map of Aaron Chamberlain’s project looks like the work of a distracted Etch A Sketch artist: red lines tangle densely and frenetically at the center in grids and dwindle to sparser, asymmetrical doodles at the edges. This is a portrait of Austin, Texas, every single street of the city—and every mile of which Chamberlain has methodically traveled by bike.

Chamberlain, a 40-year-old father of two, set out in late November 2018 to ride all the boulevards, lanes, avenues, and coves of the city he’s called home since 2008. He …

Biking offers alternate mode of transportation

By: Akhila Reddy | www.dailytoreador.com

As one of the largest campuses in the nation, Texas Tech can pose a challenge for students looking to get to their destination quickly. However, one mode of transportation students can look to are bikes.

Tech is designated as a silver-level university by the League of American Bicyclists, one of only two Texas universities to be recognized, Neil Kilcrease, assistant director for Transportation and Parking Services, said.

Criteria is based on five categories including …

After bicyclist’s death in The Woodlands, cycling advocates offer safety tips

By Jeff Forward | www.yourconroenews.com

The death of an elderly woman on Jan. 24, who was struck and killed by an SUV while bicycling on New Trails Drive in The Woodlands has led to a renewed focus on bicycling safety tips.

Qiaolian Chen, 68, of The Woodlands, died at the scene of the accident near the intersection of New Trails Drive and Technology Forest Boulevard on Jan. 24 after being hit by a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The motorist stopped and is not facing charges, according to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Erik Burse. New Trails Drive was …

Tour de Zwift: Stage 7 – Group Ride at Yorkshire

Texbiker.net Posted on February 6, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 6, 2020

I was ready for the start of today’s ride with about 20 seconds to spare. Starting out with the group but towards the back I started passing other riders settling in around 155th position. The ride started at 12:01 PM and followed the same 8.7 mile course as yesterday’s race lasting 29:09. My ride time today was 30 seconds less than my race time. Average speed today also exceeded the race: 18.4 mph for the ride and 17.8 mph for the race. Like previous Tour de Zwift group rides I rode in Group B.

While I heated up indoors outside 48 degrees and sunny reminded me winter remains but Friday it may warm up. Saturday I am registered for the Humble Lions Club Bike Ride. It starts at 8 AM and may be in the 50’s reaching 70 by the end of the ride.

Today’s ride streamed on Twitch.TV/texbiker with a picture in picture of me pedaling like crazy on the bike. Link to the Strava activity and SportTracks activity.
