About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hudson Oaks awarded $2.1 million grant to construct trail

By Autumn Owens | www.weatherforddemocrat.com

The city of Hudson Oaks was recently awarded a $2.1 million Transportation Alternative grant from the Texas Department of Transportation that will be used for Phase 1 of its trail master plan.

The grant application — which was funded in full through TxDOT’s Safe Routes to Schools program — will be used for 80 percent of the project, the other 20 percent will be funded by a local match from the city’s general fund, according to the city.

“It’s very humbling to know that the state of Texas has such high regard for the city of Hudson Oaks that it awarded us the largest amount of state funds in the most recent call for grant projects,” Hudson Oaks Mayor Marc Povero said. “I want to thank our staff for putting together the grant proposal that secured these funds for …

Tour de Zwift: Stage 7 Race (D) Yorkshire

Texbiker.net Posted on February 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 5, 2020

The final stage of the tour consisted of 1 lap on the 2019 UCI World Harrogate Circuit for 8.7 miles (13.8 km). With this race I competed in all 7 stages. This will put a race kit in my Zwift garage. I almost missed the start because I let the time get away from me. The racers left the start line and I stood there for a few seconds as I clipped in and began chasing. I passed 3 or 4 racers standing still and then worked to catch up to a group to get aerodynamic help.

With the short distance I wondered if Box Hill loomed but the course stuck to lower climbs though we rode up a 10% hill. Most of the hills came in at 7% to 8% thankfully.

The event information showed 699 racers across the four groups with group D supplying 288 of those. I think 235 showed up fr group D at the start and I was 225 at the beginning. I finished in 172nd place just ahead of D. Dammers with the same time of 30:13.

Thursday if the weather remains cool I will take part in the Stage 7 Group Ride.

Chances are, if you’re reading this blog, or any blogs at all these days, you are well over the age of 30. That’s okay, you’ve come to the right place. This blog will address topics related directly to our health and safety as pre-middle aged men and women on our post young adulthood. To put it frankly, there are things that are simply not discussed enough among our cycling demographic. While the internet is full of "Look at me!" video vlogs, dietary advice, action camera footage and bike bling, barely any content is practical to cyclists our age. 7 Reasons Why Joining a Gym Can Improve Your Bicycling

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

New Years resolutions have gone by the way side for plenty of folks a month later now that Punxsutawney Phil has (or hasn’t) seen his shadow on Groundhog Day. It seems like a good time for re-evaluating fitness goals. For me, after many, Many, MANY! thousands of miles on my bicycles – in the last four years especially – I’m still a fathlete (fat + athlete). Well, I’m athletic-adjacent. I know I ain’t no Mahomes, holmes. Point is, adaptation is a real thing, so after many years of not being a member of the Y, I asked myself “Why not join back up?” I enjoyed it before, so maybe I would again.

At first, I could only list the usual downsides: the hassle of getting there and …

Brian Neal Norton, 31, has been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner as the man who was hit and killed by the driver of a pickup truck while he was biking along the SB I-35E frontage road on 12/28/19. The driver fled the scene. https://t.co/lGSCKFrl5a

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) February 4, 2020

Per TxDOT, this stretch is 45 MPH. There is a shoulder for much of it, but the shoulder disappears in the general area where Brian was killed, between Conventry Apts and Rudy's BBQ. Drivers often use the shoulder to turn into apartments or businesses along the frontage road.

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) February 4, 2020

Brian was the 2nd person in 2019 to be killed while traveling by bicycle in Denton. In the same year, 2 people walking, 1 person driving a "motorcycle type vehicle," and 11 people in motor vehicles were also killed in automobile crashes around Denton.

A Taste of Spring Weather Biking to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on February 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 4, 2020

I set out on today’s bike ride at 12:20 PM a little later than I planned (more on that below) following the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 32.76 miles. This is the third ride on my new Lynskey R300 road bike.

Weather as I rode to Huffman: start 76 (80% humidity, 69.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 9 mph. Finish 79 (72% humidity, 69.0 dew point), overcast, wind SW 8 mph gusts 17 mph. The wind let up some for awhile and then gusts resumed. With the warmer temperature I left the jacket at home and wore shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a short sleeve jersey on top. Most of the ride this kept warm but both trips over Lake Houston I got chilled as the wind cooled as it blew over the colder water. I pedaled faster to compensate but reaching the end of the causeway warmed me up. Getting the tailwind after turning onto FM 2100 from Old Atascocita Road brought relief to my legs.

I am still sorting out the gearing on the Lynskey but today I think I did better selecting the combination and pedaling around 16 to 17 mph when not biking into the headwind.

What delayed my start some was my trip to Postal Annex to mail my return of the Fabric ALM all carbon saddle. I bought it intending to put it on the Lynksey R300 but changed my mind. Since my Canyon Endurace CF SLX is a carbon bike why not put the Fabric ALM on it to keep the carbon thing going. Big problem! The seatpost and clamp on the Canyon is different from the typical seatpost. The Canyon clamp wraps the seat rails from the sides rather than clamping from the top. The Fabric ALM’s rails’ shape would not fit the seat clamp no matter which way I tried. So I decided to return it. This meant changing saddles from the Lynksey to the Canyon back and forth. This took time plus I tried to contact Koobi.com by phone to ask about the PRS Century saddle and make a call to Lynskey about a missing rubber plug for the headset.

The weather changes later tonight turning cool to cold. Zwifting looks like the biking for Wednesday and maybe Thursday.
