About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Trailist: Government Canyon Has History Along 40 Miles of Trails

by Brendan Gibbons | therivardreport.com

For those who want to get lost all day in a sea of green, Government Canyon State Natural Area allows the deepest plunge into wilderness of any park within a short drive of San Antonio.

Hidden among the trees and creeks are pieces of history, making this park popular with hikers and mountain bikers. A roughly 6-mile hike on the Joe Johnson Route takes visitors to tracks left by dinosaurs, a rock midden left by indigenous peoples, and a …

Johnny’s Mobile Bicycle Repair

Johnny | bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

Readers of my blog already know that I’m an experienced bike mechanic. For the past 6 years, I have been in and around bike shops building bicycles and doing everything from changing flat tires to advanced services like hydraulic disc brake bleeds. The truth is, I live, breathe even bleed bikes. Is that all I’m good at? Readers who follow my blog know the answer to that also. Although I have done photography as a business and have an affinity for drawing, repairing bicycles is the thing that I currently enjoy the most, the thing that I can focus my attention on. I have always been a hands-on kind of guy. I have had office jobs that I have hated and know myself well enough to say I rather work standing up and moving around than …

Blown In The Wind Biking Around Montgomery County

Texbiker.net Posted on February 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 3, 2020

The clouds rolled in thanks to the high wind. I chose biking to the north to take advantage of the tailwind on the way to New Caney. The route labeled “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” travels north to FM 1485 before turning to the NW on FM 1485. Up to that point I enjoyed a tailwind most of the time but with the left turn onto Gene Campbell Road I got the first taste of the headwind waiting for me at FM 1314. Once I began biking on FM 1314 to the SE the headwind slowed me down as my legs struggled to put enough power to the pedals to maintain my overall average speed of 13.5 mph.

Today’s ride totaled 37.29 miles. My February goals: 345 road miles and 100 Zwift miles. I am at 73.4 road miles and 10.4 Zwift miles.

Learning the different gearing on the Lynskey R300 bike I improved my speed going north and used the lower gearing to combat some of the 24 mph wind gusts on the way back to Kingwood. The Lynskey R300 rear cassette includes the 11-34 gears while the Canyon runs an 11-28 cluster accounting for the different speeds for the corresponding gear positions. The Canyon’s crankset rings are 52×36 while the Lynskey has 52×40. It will take a few more rides to figure out which gear combination on the Lynskey gets the speed I want.

The clouds and wind made the 73 degree temperature feel cooler than that and I appreciated my thermal long jersey and wind jacket. Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (74% humidity, 64.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 21 mph. Finish 72 (75% humidity, 63.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph gusts 23 mph. Tuesday’s forecast calls for warmer temperature but not as windy and lower chance of rain at 20%.

"The Culture of Mountain Biking Has Gone Astray"

By RidingAgain | austinmountainbiking.com

In researching possible topics for an annual local Austin bike and hike magazine project presentation outline I came across this essay… I found it really interesting in how the author took a look at the current mountain biking culture — particularly in the light of the closing down of Dirt Rag magazine and what the owner/publisher said about the current biking culture in an interview back in 2017. It’s a good read.

The heading for this thread is the heading for the essay.

And as usual… Make sure and check out the comments that follow…

Get Acquainted Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on February 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 2, 2020

Yesterday I took my new Lynskey R300 outside for a PowerPod calibration ride and today I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to get acquainted with the new bike. Riding 33.77 miles gave me time to compare the Lynskey to my Canyon Endurace CF SLX.

The two bikes ride different and feel different. One of the first things I noticed are the handlebars: the Canyon’s oval bar gives my fingers plenty of area to wrap around while the Lynskey’s round bar is not as generous. Another difference was the gearing. Before the ride I didn’t think to see what the gears were and selected the gears I use on the Canyon and shift up as the ride progresses. I found that my speed was slower than the corresponding rear cog position on the Canyon so I will look at the gears. I think riding the Lynskey I will need to use the big chainring on the crank which I rarely do on the Canyon.

When I started today’s ride I thought the PowerPod was ready to use but it didn’t want to connect to the Wahoo Elemnt computer. What I wrote on the Velocomp forum after the ride.

Yesterday I did an O&B calibration ride and everything looked okay. After the ride I connected the PP to Isaac and it found a new profile but as it downloaded older ride files it kept asking if I wanted to change the ride profile to the new one which I did not because it was not the new bike. I selected “cancel” and the file downloaded and went to the next ride and repeated the process. Is it possible to add another choice like “No”?

I checked the new profile and it had the new sensors’ ANT+ wireless numbers.

Today I took the new bike for its first ride with the PP. I pressed the PP start button after waking the speed and cadence sensors (Wahoo wireless) but it would not connect to the Wahoo Elemnt. I went ahead and started riding hoping the movement would waken the PP. No change. I pressed the PP start button several times and no change. Then I pressed the button 5 times but no success. Then I held the PP start button for about 15 seconds. The PP connected to the Elemnt and worked as expected the rest of the ride. I am not sure what I did but it was frustrating not being able to see what the PP wanted or was doing.

It sure would be helpful if there was an app on my Pixel 3 XL phone that connected to the PP and let me manage it, see what the settings are and add a new bike with sensors. The PP connects to Isaac why not a phone app?

As to be expected the Lynskey and Canyon are different but not a “bad” different. I need more rides on the Lynskey to know how to utilize its features.

Weather during today’s bike ride: start 75 (29% humidity, 40.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 14 mph. Finish 76 (29% humidity, 41.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. After Zwifting each day this week I was ready for sun and the outside. This was the answer. Monday’s forecast calls for cloudy, 74 and a chance of rain. I plan on riding the Lynskey R300 for more learning.

I saw several other cyclists today. One pair I saw twice, once each time I was riding on W. Lake Houston Parkway as they whizzed by me in there green and black with red taillights blinking.
