About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Nine-year-old uses her savings to buy her classmate a new bike

Jaleesa Irizarry | www.kens5.com

The third grader had been saving money since Kindergarten.

Sitting on her living room couch sifting through a shark book, one thing is clear; you can learn a lot from Charlette Huckaba.

"I think this is a tiger shark," she said as she stared at the photo in her newest shark book.

This third grader’s teachings go far beyond her extensive shark knowledge. She can teach you other things; things you can’t learn from a book or inside a classroom.

Just a couple of weeks ago Charlette Huckaba left school at Woodstone Elementary with something on …

15 YEARS NOT A SLAVE TO CARS!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

This is my fifth annual post about being car-free since 1/25/2005. Technically I’m car-light, since I drove borrowed cars for a job for part of last summer also visited relatives over the holidays. On the other hand, I managed my best year ever combined and walking and biking – 5,633 miles.

I did that while on a bike that has 67% fewer gears and is 25% heavier steel (Sophie) than my old aluminum steed (Sookie). I’m no Greta Thunberg, but I do think reducing car use is a good thing. Not everyone can do it, but some …

Tour de Zwift: Stage 4 – Bologna Time Trial with 20% Climbs

Texbiker.net Posted on January 27, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 27, 2020

I thought a difficult choice of racing the Tour de Zwift Stage 4 or biking outside was coming but by 11:30 AM the weather outside made the decision for me. The overcast sky with 57 degrees meant staying inside. Today was the last chance to ride the Tour de Zwift Stage 4 with stage 5 coming tomorrow. I chose Group D which looked like where my w/kg capability stood the best chance.

Lining up for the 12:13 PM start I jumped back off the Blue Norcross AL to turn on the ceiling fan, move the desk light, and turn the computer monitor. I got back on the bike with 4 seconds to the start. Poor planning but I needed the ceiling fan because this race would put out a lot body heat. I had no idea about the 20% climbs on the course; we went up the same climb twice. Not that would change my mind but maybe I would’ve saved a little bit of energy before I got there.

The big climb about 3.8 miles into the lap and lasted until the 5.1 mile point when we raced back down onto some flat roads before going back up to finish at the top.

Overall 4 groups 407 racers signed up with 174 in my group, D. I finished 80th in 1:06:56 averaging 159 watts. The distance came in at 15.43 miles at 14.0 mph average speed. The climbs killed my average speed but I did get up to 54 mph going back down the climb. The profile of the course looks like a two hump camel on my Strava activity page. The SportTracks activity shows my speed going back down.

Tuesday Stage 5 begins. The weather forecast looks like I will be inside racing stage 5.

Bicycle Diaries: Dallas to Fort Worth via Trinity River

Regan O’Brien | www.blogoutside.com

Studio Outside completed an extensive urban design framework to connect the people of Dallas to the new Harold Simmons Park in the Trinity River. The study inspired me, but also made me curious about not only the city connected to the river and its park, but also the river connecting our cities.

Here in the DFW Metroplex, we have a unique urban condition. Dallas and Fort Worth are connected over 40 miles of the Trinity River. Arlington, Irving, Grand Prairie, and other Metroplex cities also encompass portions of the river in this space. Dallas, the eastern metropolis, intercepts the Trinity River just before it turns south into the Great Trinity Forest, eventually making its way to the Trinity River Bay where it disperses into the …

As we all know, Abilene is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We always enjoy seeing Abilene ranked high in categories regarding the quality of life we enjoy here.

Bikers Encountered Riding to E Lake Houston Parkway

Texbiker.net Posted on January 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 26, 2020

Lots of sunshine today compared to the overcast sky on Saturday. Warmer too! I thought starting at 1:08 PM the chance of meeting other bikers was slim but as I approached Cross Country Drive in Walden 4 bikers stood at the stop sign.

My planned route took me on what I call “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway”. At the time when I met the other cyclists they invited me to ride along as they went to Buc ee’s in Baytown. But that would be 40 to 50 miles longer than I wanted to ride. They said I could ride with them over Lake Houston and I agreed. They rode a little faster than me and when we turned onto FM 1960 it didn’t take long for them to pull away. That figured if they were going to ride that far and get back before dark. I watched them in the distance and turned around at E. Lake Houston Parkway as planned. My ride ended up at 24.75 miles. This puts me over my 300 mile January goal for road miles with 304.5 miles. With 5 more potential road biking days left I hope to add to that amount.

As I mentioned in the video I tried a different position for the GoPro using a helmet mount. I think this position allows more views with swiveling my head. I need to master keeping my fingers out of the video when I turn the camera off. The sound picks louder too with the microphone on the bottom of the GoPro closer to my mouth.
