About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mountain bike club tackles outdoor rec needs

By Autumn Owens | www.weatherforddemocrat.com

The Weatherford Mountain Bike Club was established as a non-profit in 2015 and since that time has created natural trails throughout the county to address the outdoor recreational needs of the public.

“I was president of the Fort Worth Mountain Bikers Association and I led that club for seven years and learned how everything worked running a non-profit. I wanted to start something where I lived because I was working in downtown Fort Worth but living here in Weatherford, so I asked the city of Weatherford if …

Can Meditation Improve Your Bicycling?

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

We humans are always looking to improve, make progress, get ahead. If we can find a short cut, a hack, a trick, we’ll more often than not take it. The path of least resistance isn’t necessarily laziness either. There’s a fine line between sloth and smart. When it comes to cycling, whether you ride 5,000 miles a year (as I did in 2019) or 500, the easier the better. Mindfulness is all the rage now, although meditation has been around for thousands of years. So, can meditation improve your bicycling? …

Problems Solved Except for Wind Chill Bike Ride to FM 1485

Texbiker.net Posted on January 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 25, 2020

After experiencing several problems during yesterday’s bike ride I hope my fixes worked on today’s bike ride. I put a new battery in the cadence sensor and tightened the PowerPod in the mount. Both of those actions solved their problem.

Since I went south yesterday I chose the “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route for today’s bike ride. The route goes north and then back south. I rolled out of the driveway at 12:13 PM and finished at 2:40 PM. In between I enjoyed a tailwind to FM 1485 and suffered with a chilling headwind on the ride back to Kingwood. I biked 30.21 miles moving me to within 20 miles of my 300 mile goal for January.

The 15 to 17 mph wind from the SE chilled me because I chose the wrong jacket. Weather during the bike ride: start 64 (54% humidity, 47.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph. Finish 63 (64% humidity, 51.1 dew point), overcast, wind SE 17 mph. Adding the wind speed from pedaling into the headwind I felt cold on the segment back to Kingwood. The sleeves of the jacket let the chill penetrate and the long sleeve thermal jersey didn’t keep me warm. Maybe a short sleeve jersey over the thermal jersey would’ve helped. If the sunshine provided some warmth like yesterday maybe my kit would’ve been warmer. Also wearing half finger gloves added to the chilly feeling. Ice water in my water bottle didn’t help any. The leg warmers did their job as the bike shorts did too.

January weather is winter and complaining about the cold in SE Texas doesn’t compare to up north where I grew up. Zwifting allows me to ride almost every day no matter the weather. Sunday will be warmer and the early morning rain should be gone by the time I get home from church.

To those who knew him, Nelson’s longtime friend Mark Griffin said this dedication will help preserve his legacy. But what Griffin said he’s happiest about is that people who didn’t know Nelson will see the sign and look up who he is. …

The Bike Ride of Problems to Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2020

Waiting for the temperature to get a little more above 60 degrees I started the bike ride at 12:48 PM. My planned route took me to E Lake Houston Parkway south and east but around 4/10 of mile into the ride a problem happened: the right side of the dual GoPro mount broke where I used Gorilla Glue to repair it. The Gorilla lost his grip on this one. The jarring from the bike was too much. Now holding the PowerPod in my left hand I turned around and went back home. Arriving there I retrieved the aluminum dual GoPro mount I bought in case the Gorilla Glue failed. I thought this would fix it quickly and get back to the ride. NOPE!! Maybe my anxiousness to ride outside after 6 days of Zwifting got the ride of problems going. The broken bracket.

1-24-2020 Broken Dual GoPro Mount

Taking the new mount out of the package I saw the GoPro fingers attached with a screw. Removing the screw and moving the mount to the top of the aluminum cross bar I thought maybe this would allow the GoPro camera to mount above the crossbar but when I tried that the Elemnt computer blocked the camera. Turning the bracket back to below the crossbar I tried to insert the GoPro frame into the fingers and it wouldn’t fit. I had another frame from my GoPro Hero7 White camera which did slide in after some hard pushing. Now I got ready to ride putting the PowerPod in its slot on the right and the camera on the left.

1-24-2020 Aluminum Dual GoPro Mount

With all of time lost fixing the mounts I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Walden” route. Heading south along W. Lake Houston Parkway when I looked at the greenbelt trail over Ben’s Branch it looked like the contractor removed the barrier at the north side of the bridge but when I got to the south side the barrier was still there requiring me to dismount, walk through some almost mud, lean under the rope before getting back on the Canyon bike. Not long after that I noticed the cadence sensor not showing numbers as I turned the pedals. If I hit a bump it would produce cadence numbers for awhile and then go back to zero. I stopped and pushed on the case thinking the battery might be lose but that didn’t help much. This continued until I noticed the PowerPod was tilted downward causing it to not report power. Until then I thought the cadence sensor was causing the PowerPod to shows 0’s. Once I adjusted the tilt power showed up again and cadence seemed to be more consistent. I will check the sensor’s battery.

Because of these problems the ride data does not represent what really happened.

On the good news side of the ride I wore a new Pearl Izumi Elite Escape Convertible black jacket that kept me comfortable along with the long sleeve thermal jersey, leg warmers, and shorts. Weather during the bike ride: start 64 (41% humidity, 40.0 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph. Finish 66 (35% humidity, 37.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 8 mph.
