About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Silent Ride of Remembrance for Merry “Cookie” Daye: ¡Presente!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The rain stopped, clouds parted, and the sun came out on a winter Saturday in Austin. Fifty or so bicyclists gathered underneath the Browning Hangar, the first of its kind, a now refurbished WWII era structure built with wooden trusses. A sense of history was fitting for the somber purpose: to celebrate the life and commemorate the death of Merry “Cookie” Katheryn Daye. She was the fourth Austin Cyclist to die in 2019 in a crash, in this case a hit-and-run with a truck. We rode slowly and quietly to the crash site and had a gathering, and then returned. It was a fitting event.

The tragedy still hurts for the family members and strangers alike who didn’t …

Tour de Zwift: Stage 2 Race at Innsbruck

Texbiker.net Posted on January 19, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 19, 2020

On to stage 2 of the Tour de Zwift circled Innsbruck. The stage went 11.1 miles with two climbs up the same hill at 8%. Starting time came at 1:13 PM but I almost missed the start time by not allowing enough time to get everything set up. Then once the race started I noticed my heart rate monitor not showing up on the Zwift dashboard. So I hopped off the Blue Norcross AL bike, quickly paired the Tickr Fit and got back on. By then I fell to about 128th place out of 138 racers. From there it was catch up. For awhile I rode alone but I watched the nearby riders and their w/kg numbers and tried to ride above that to pull them in.

Racing without a fence means my ability to turn the pedals and put out watts determines my position. Over 10+ miles I worked up to 98th place. For the sprint to the finish one racer I got in front and I tried to stay in his draft but fell back and came in behind him in 99th place out of 177.

After racing two Tour de Zwift Stages I think I know the tactics to stay in a group if I get set up on time and no equipment issues. Looking forward to Stage 3 race. I try to do the Stage Group Ride but Group C is for women only and Group B is too fast.

Cool weather at Texbiker HQ on Monday. Zwifting will take place.

Breathing Lots of Jungle Dust Zwifting The Jungle Loop

Texbiker.net Posted on January 18, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 18, 2020

A bunch of firsts on today’s Zwifting adventure. First gravel ride, first ride on a Zwift MTB, first time on the Jungle Loop, first time breathing virtual dust.

I wanted to ride outdoors but as the time to ride approached I checked the weather and radar showed rain to the south and to the north limiting my route options and exposing me to getting wet. I chose to go Zwifting with the Pack SUB2 Gravel Ride starting at 10 AM. I think 256 other Zwifters joined the ride.

As to be expected biking gravel roads dust flew as the Pack raced, I mean rode. The SUB2 means the pace held to 2 w/kg or less but many times I exceeded that sometimes riding through the fence. The leader fell behind the front pack and the fence came into play many times to slow the group. Some screenshots during the ride.

The ride consisted of two loops with a 3 mile lead in section. After the two laps an after party lap continued but I chose not to do that one. The after party lap caused your bike to revert to whatever bike you chose before the ride began so if a road bike was your choice you would ride a lap on it. We crossed the bridge twice where the only real hill climb happened. The pack slowed down there with the call from the leader to stay around 1.5 w/kg which I tried to hold but many others went above riding through the fence. Near the finish the fence disappeared without a warning from the leader.

Overall the Zwift Jungle Loop Gravel Ride came indifferent with a difference in the gear transmitting from a road bike. Pedaling the same RPM produced lower watts it seemed like. Top speeds appeared slower too. I will watch for another gravel ride.
