About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Almost Went Zwifting But Bike Ride to Community Drive Won Out

Texbiker.net Posted on January 17, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 17, 2020

Preparing to go Zwifting I checked the temperature outside and changed my mind. Due to a late start I chose a short route: “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch”. I biked 26.49 miles which put the week total at 126.46 miles and January at 388.62 miles. My goals for January: 300 miles on the road and 100 miles virtual riding on Zwift. Currently the mileage breaks down to 226.7 miles on the road and 162 miles on Zwift.

I was going to ride the Tour de Zwift Stage 2 race until the weather improved enough to ride outside. Weather while I biked: start 69 (90% humidity, 65.6 dew point), overcast, wind SE 9 mph. Finish 70 (86% humidity, 65.6 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph. To offset the chill today I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey and a jacket. Sunday the weather turns cold again and I will ride the Tour de Zwift Stage 2 race then.

During the bike ride I looked at my GoPro and saw it moving around. I checked and found the new dual mount that I installed last week broke at the junction in the center. Apparently plastic is not strong enough to handle the bumps and vibration of biking. I found an aluminum one on Amazon which should be stronger. In the meantime I will try Gorilla glue.

Saturday weather looks to repeat today. Hopefully it gets above 60 quicker than today. Some sun would be nice too.

The image below shows an overview of the year progressions from Strava.

Tidbits from the Life of a Cyclist in Austin

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

I got a flat tire last night, but not just any flat tire. The tube exploded with a loud BANG! and so did the tire. The thing is, I was at a well-known high-crime drug corner, and for a second I thought someone was shooting at me with a gun. Then I realized the air was gone from my rear tire and my pedaling was over for the night. The guys hanging out at the convenience store parking lot knew it wasn’t a gunshot, though. There was a police officer parked in the lot, and a bus came along pretty quickly. Even more fortunate was that I was near …

Fog Breaks, Dry Streets, Overcast Sky Biking to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on January 16, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 16, 2020

The fog and damp streets finally gave way to an overcast sky and dry streets. The bike ride started at 11:29 AM and finished at 2:04 PM as I biked the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route riding 33.42 miles.

I saw 5 other bikers including one trike recumbent biker on Pine Cluster Lane at Pinewood Park. He came around the corner quickly before I could turn on my GoPro camera but we saw each other in time to wave. (I bought a GoPro Hero7 Black to replace my Hero7 White).

Wind made the bike ride challenging as it increased from 9 mph at the beginning of the bike ride to 14 mph at the finish. From the southeast the headwind lasted until I reached FM 2100 and turned north. From there my overall average speed increased from 13 mph to 13.6 mph by the time I got back into Kingwood.

While the temperature was 74 at the start I dressed kike it was a little cooler with shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a new Louis Garneau Blink RTR jacket. The jacket is light but the elastic around the end of the sleeves kept wind from going inside so I adjusted the zipper several times to find the right opening to allow the body heat to escape keeping me from overheating too much. Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (86% humidity, 69.3 dew point), overcast, wind E 9 mph. Finish 77 (75% humidity, 68.9 dew point), overcast, wind SE 14 mph.

Friday biking looks possible with the current weather forecast.
