Safety improvements at some of Austin’s top crash locations are months behind schedule. Construction was set to begin last fall at these four intersections:
W. Braker Lane at Stonelake Boulevard
North Lamar Boulevard at Payton Gin Road
North Lamar Boulevard at St. John’s Avenue
E. Oltorf Street at Parker Lane
Now construction at the intersections could begin this spring and summer — about 6 months behind schedule, but the city says the slowdown isn’t their fault.
At Payton Gin and North Lamar people are on the move, whether it’s by four wheels or …

The big news on today’s bike ride: wind and light rain. The weather forecast went light on the chance of rain during the day so I set off on today’s bike ride following my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I should have earlier than the noon start time and maybe missed some of the light rain that I ran into east of Lake Houston on Old Atascocita Road. From that point until I finished around 2:25 PM I biked through patches of light rain but at Alspaugh’s Hardware the rain got serious while I waited to cross W. Lake Houston Parkway.
Maybe the trade off for a day in the low 70’s in January includes overcast sky and some light rain. Weather at the start and finish: start 73 (78% humidity, 65.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 16 mph gusts 25 mph. Finish 71 (86% humidity, 66.8 dew point), light rain, wind S 14 mph gusts 25 mph. I did not realize how strong the wind was until I took screenshots of the NOAA current conditions just before starting the bike ride. It was tough riding whenever I headed south. My power readings on the Elemnt computer spiked above 600 watts a couple of times pedaling into the wind. That surprised me because I rarely get above 500 watts. Possibly a contributing factor for the high power reading was the new mounting for my PowerPod and GoPro camera.
Until today I mounted the PowerPod below and in front of the handlebars. The GoPro stood on the handlebars in the center (see the first picture). I bought a mount extender on eBay that holds two GoPro type items side-by-side out front of the bike below my Elemnt computer. The PowerPod position might influence the power measurement but I am not sure. One thing I learned during the bike ride: the GoPro camera should be on the left making it easier to push the start/stop button to record. The GoPro has no problem recording upside down but the microphone is farther away from me. After the ride I moved the camera to the left. Next bike ride will tell me if it is easier to get to the start/stop button. Maybe it will improve the audio too. The GoPro White Hero7 does not accept a microphone. I would to move to a Hero 8 camera for that.
Rain and overcast sky awaits on Friday. According to the forecast the rain chance gets higher in the evening. I plan on biking before then.
Designs for the $18 million, 9-mile Trinity Forest Spine Trail are underway, starting with the north phase.
Construction on a long-awaited trail that would connect White Rock Lake to South Dallas could start as early as September.
After the Circuit Trail Conservancy secured $43 million to build The Loop — a beefed up hike-and-bike trail system that would create 10 miles of new paths to connect with 40 existing miles around the city’s urban core — the nonprofit’s next steps are to …
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new report by the City of Austin lays out what is possible for the future of Rainey Street, including potential plans which could close off the street to car traffic permanently.
City staff have identified that Rainey Street “has seen rapid growth in recent years†which has strained existing infrastructure and transportation options.
The report, which is part of the Rainey Mobility Study, was commissioned by Austin’s Transportation Department (ATD) and the Planning and Zoning Department (PAZ). The infrastructure firm AECOM compiled the …

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Getting around the city of Brownsville has just become a lot easier.
Pedicabs, also known as bicycle taxis, are pedal-powered vehicles that make for easier mode of transportation. Bigger cities around Texas have already adapted to pedicabs. With the growth, the city of Brownsville has seen tourist and residents are now able to get around the city. The co-owner of pedicabs says this service will make it easier to enjoy the sites of downtown Brownsville.

At the beginning of 2020, I think it’s important to focus on members of our community. In this letter, I’d like to focus on Larry Sbar and Ed Pettit, two community members who represent our commitment to safer streets for cyclists.
Larry Sbar rides his bike in Spring Branch. He does not own a car. The Spring Branch Management District has a plan to connect the West Houston Trails at the Addicks Dam to the White Oak Bayou Trails along the Centerpoint utility corridor north of Hammerly. While it is great to connect trails, we also need to ride on …

I should have suspected something at the beginning of the ride when D.T. (Herd) said the ride was flat all the way. I rode this event before but my memory failed me. The last 2+ miles included the climb up Keith Hill with inclines of 12%. I retreated from the front group to 141st when I finished after 23.99 miles.
I live streamed the ride at Twitch.TV/Texbiker for those who wanted to watch me suffer up the mountain to the finish.
As usual at the start the lead group got away from me so I raced to catch up from 298th out of 372 to at one point 3rd which didn’t last that long. With the fence 20 seconds in front of the ride leader it is easy to cross through the fence when you are in the front 20 or below. After that I slowed enough to be in the top 50 most of the time until Keith’s Hill attacked my smart trainer and the legs bogged down.
While the weather outside was within my riding zone I rode in Zwift due to errands and time commitments. The ride started at 12:00 PM and lasted 1:19:43. Strava had me down for at least 3 personal records while Zwift didn’t show any. No wonder with the 12% climbs near the end of the ride.
Tomorrow looks like outdoor biking is possible if the 50% chance of rain stays away. Temperature should be in the mid 70’s.
