About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas bicyclist dies in I-40 crash

www.muskogeephoenix.com

A Pampa, Texas, man died while riding a bicycle on Interstate 40 approximately 6 miles east of Checotah in McIntosh County, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

According to OHP, the man on the bicycle was eastbound on the shoulder of I-40, and Brittany Booth, 28, of Wister, was driving a 2016 GMC Sierra eastbound in the outside lane. For an unknown reason, the …

Video: Lake Wichita boardwalk construction to be finished by spring

By Mason Brighton | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) – Breathing life back into Lake Wichita, that’s going on right now as the lake’s boardwalk project continues.

After speaking with the chairman of the lake’s revitalization committee, we know that work here is staying on track to be complete by spring.

“When you’re coming down the Circle Trail you can defiantly see what’s going on and I know when I ride my bike on the trail I’m always watching what’s going on,” David Coleman, Chairmen of the Lake Wichita Revitalization Committee said. “You can see the piles have gone in, they are concrete piles where the steel reinforcing is coming up.”

Just over a month into construction, the beginnings of what’s to come are …

5,633 Miles in 2019: 5,006 Biking + 627 Walking = My Longest Total Year Yet!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Oops, I did it again! I beat last year by 490 miles! (See 2018’s recap at 5,143 Miles in 2018: 4,554 Biking + 589 Walking. Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good for A Dude!) Almost all of that difference, 452 miles, was by bike. It came down to the wire, too, since I didn’t make it until the last day of the year. Seeing how my beginning goal was 4,000 miles by bike, adding another 1,000 — most of it (712) in December alone — was a ton of hard work every day. Let’s take a look …

Zwifting Around Innsbruckring with ZHCC

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2020

I waited and waited for the temperature to get above 60 but as my time window shrunk I opted to go Zwifting instead of riding outdoors. Looking for a start time and length that agreed with my time window I chose the ZHCC Sub 2.0 Ride around Innsbruckring. The ride started at 12:15 PM and lasted 60 minutes. My time window revolved around the 3:00 PM start of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball game with Tulane and the Houston Texans playoff game at 3:30 PM.

As the start time neared I opened the software to livestream on Twitch.TV/texbiker, got my bike ready, fan connected and waited for the gun. I used a wireless keyboard to control the various camera angles during the ride.

Somehow the group got away from me at the start so I grabbed the wheel of another rider and increased my w/kg above 2.0 to catch them. Slowly we passed a few riders but it took the 9% climb that we did 3 times during the ride to slow everyone else down enough to get in the front group. This ride didn’t show my position among the group but the leader said the group consisted of 402 riders. Once I got to the main group I stayed there and I think I stayed behind the fence except for 1 time for a couple of seconds. With the aerodynamic relief you get riding in a group I backed off of the w/kg but up until that time my ride was anything but sub 2.0 w/kg.

Sunday the weather will warm up and the sun remains. Great for outdoor biking after church.

New change in Austin 311 App makes it easier for cyclists to report issues

Tori Larned | www.kvue.com

A new category allows people to report vehicles parked in bike lines. Austin Transportation can use this data to more easily identify hot spots.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin cyclists experiencing problems with vehicles parked in bike lanes can now report them directly through the Austin 311 App.

Austin Transportation added the category "Bike Lanes" under "Traffic Violations" in the app, and believes it will help them track any problems.

HOUSTON – Drivers in the Midtown neighborhood are seeing a lot more green as a new bike lane is about to open in the area, and it’s the first of many coming to Space City in the new year.

First Outdoor Bike Ride of 2020

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2020

Today’s bike ride went north to Tavola, development east of I-69/US59 near Roman Forest. My previous 2 bike rides of 2020 took place indoor in Zwift’s virtual worlds. My plan “A” for biking today involved Zwift but as the time for the Zwift ride approached the weather outside improved.

As I began today’s bike ride at 12:21 PM the clouds from earlier in the morning broke and blue sky peeked through. To go with the blue sky the temperature moved up to 67.8 (my home weather station), above my cutoff threshold of 60. I gathered my clothes and got ready. To be safe, and comfortable, I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a nylon jacket. With all of the sun I chose half finger gloves thinking the sun would keep my fingers warm. By the end of the ride at 3:06 PM the wind picked up to 13 mph from the NW versus the 4 mph at the start. The side wind on the way to Tavola did not hamper my efforts but I expected some resistance on the return trip to Kingwood. That resistance didn’t affect me that much as the direction rotated to the NW and my direction complimented it. Riding in the shade emphasized the wind chill and at times I wished for another jersey layer. I felt the chill after stopping at Rosewood Cemetery to visit my wife’s grave allowing time to cool down some and then getting the wind moving through my damp jacket and jersey.

Before the ride as I checked the Wahoo Elemnt computer and sensors the speed sensor failed to connect. I replaced the battery and all worked. I am glad I added the sensor check to my before ride routine.

Saturday I suspect waiting awhile to give the temperature time to warm up to the mid 60’s before biking.

I stopped on Bentwood Drive in Oakhurst for this picture. Plenty of blue sky.
