About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Images and Thoughts from My Holiday Bike Rides

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

You won’t believe this, because I still don’t believe it myself. I wrote a blog for Saturday, but couldn’t publish it because I didn’t have wi-fi. Outrageous, right? Well, it’s true. Someone I was visiting could connect but didn’t know their password and didn’t want to sit on hold with their service provider. By the time I got back to Austin, it wasn’t that relevant or great a post. So I missed a Saturday, big whoop. But what I didn’t miss was riding my bicycle, so we’re going to go with that as a theme. It is after all, the most wonderful time of the year, and any time you can be on a bicycle is …

Pony herding and gravel Day 8: Festive 500

J Mix | www.strava.com

It seems appropriate I would end the year herding some ponies and riding some gravel sections. A good way to end a decade of riding with the Brit. Ended the year with 12,610 miles. Not too bad. 👍and lots of fun!

Technical Frustrations on Zwift ZHCC 1.5 (D) Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 31, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 31, 2019

Where do I begin? I signed up for The Herd’s ride that began at 11:55 AM but when I attempted to open the Zwift desktop program it tried to update and gave me error message “Patcher: ERROR #Z112, FILE “Patcher.cpp”, LINE 602: Failed to download needed server files for update! (Last: “ZwiftApp.exe”)”. I went to the Zwift support pages to find a solution but none of them worked. Maybe this equates to a flat tire on a ride?

Running out of time I canceled The Herd ride and signed up for the ZHCC 1.5 ride around Richmond, VA starting at 12:30 PM. Still trying to find a solution as the start time got closer I gave up on my PC and started Zwift on my Android tablet.

The Zwift orange app opened on the tablet and I started pairing sensors to the tablet using Bluetooth. The smart trainer connected, heart rate monitor connected but the cadence sensor connected and then dropped off. I got off the Blue Norcross AL bike trying to fix the cadence connection only for it to drop off again several times. Added to that problem the tablet sat on my desk a little too far to see the details of the ride route and riders.

Next I installed the Zwift orange app on my phone thinking that it would be closer and see the route better but when I opened the app the smart trainer sensor failed to connect. I suspected the tablet connection caused the problem so I closed the app on my phone.

Dismounting one more time I brought the tablet to the bike and laid it on my phone mount. I could see better now and started to makeup for lost time. The front group rode about 3 1/2 minutes in front of me but I passed several other riders as I maintained 2.0+ w/kg while they showing less w/kg.

Frustrated with the issues I stopped at 7.56 miles and 29:56 minutes. Not a good ride to finish 2019.

After the ride I remembered changing a setting on my router and wondered if that caused the problem. Changing the router setting I started Zwift on my PC, the update started, finished and opened. The router setting must’ve been the problem blocking the update. The Zwift worked with the router setting until an update wanted to install. Who knew?

Inspite of the technical difficulties I recorded a personal record and two 2nd fastest times according to Strava.

Hopefully 2020 starts better. Weather conditions probably means another Zwift ride on New Year’s day.

Zwift Bike Ride SZR Joyride Around Innsbruck

Texbiker.net Posted on December 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 30, 2019

The ride began at 12:04 PM on the Innsbruck course. The group label said “joyride” but the pace stayed around 2.1 w/kg. I delicately stayed between the leader and the fence most of the ride not piercing the fence once. Some people got ahead of the fence but I didn’t see a message from the leader saying anyone left the ride.

At the start time the weather outside looked nice with a blue sky but the 58 degrees fell below my threshold of 60.

Completing the ride I biked 19.22 miles putting my year to date at 8,200 miles, the most ever. The breakdown: 7,583 on the road and 617 on the smart trainer in Zwift. We went over the same climb as yesterday hitting 9% incline 3 times during the 59:45 riding time. Elevation gain during the ride came in at 883 ft.

Strava reported 3 personal records while Zwift put up 2 personal records sprinting of all things. Because of the w/kg division I rode in the “E” group but maybe I could’ve held with the “D” group. I think there were 91 bikers in the “E” group.

Tuesday, last day of the year and decade, may be another Zwifting day with the temperature in the low 60’s. That is above my threshold but sometimes it gets to the high later in the afternoon, too late to ride outside.
