About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Not Too Chilling on the Zwift Team CLS Chill ‘n’ Spin (Flat Course)

Texbiker.net Posted on December 29, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 29, 2019

The day began with rain but by the time I returned from church the rain stopped but the temperature held at 59 degrees. I selected a Zwift ride earlier before going to church which began at 12:50 PM, the Zwift Team CLS Chill ‘n’ Spin (Flat Course) (D). This was the first time I rode a Team CLS event. As the start time approached I planned on trying streaming on Twitch.com as well as recording to upload to YouTube.com. Setting up the OBS program to stream only required a Twitch account. Checking after the ride finished 2 people watched.

As the ride began I saw 131 other Zwifters in the group and this grew to 161 later. I thought I had all of my equipment ready but around 6 minutes into the ride I opened the Wyze app to turn on the fan and the Wyze plug was offline. I jumped off the Blue Norcross AL bike and unplugged the fan and in the process turned off the power to my smart trainer. I thought I turned the power back on quick enough to not interrupt the connection, got on the bike and resumed pedaling. But a few minutes later I coasted to a stop while I pedaled away and saw the smart trainer unconnected from Zwift. Another quick jump off the bike to unplug and plug in the smart trainer and all sensors connected. By now I dropped back from 92 position to 131st position about 3 minute behind the main group. It took the rest of the ride to move up about 30 positions before I stopped the ride at 24.52 miles, about 2.5 miles short of completing the 5 laps the main group did. I stopped before going up the 8% climb near the end of the lap after riding up 4 times in the previous laps. I wanted to have time to write about the ride, shower and ready to watch the Texans vs Titans football game at 3:25 PM.

Strava recorded 3 personal records as I rode around the Innsbruck course. It looks like people created over 200 segments in Strava for this route. Strava put my max speed at 40.7 mph which must be going down the 8% climb. I don’t remember seeing that speed in the Zwift app or on the monitor. SportTracks has a problem calculating max speed from the Strava TCX file I upload to SportTracks, my max speed showed 146,700 mph.

Not sure if I will Zwift or ride outdoors on Monday with the weather turning sunny but the temperature in the low 60’s maybe.

The Four Quarters!

James Jimenez | www.strava.com

I don’t usually ride over 2 hours, but when I do it’s 13 – Wheels Around Houston

Joey Martinez | www.strava.com

Even an Iron Horse fears The Snakedoctor!

Brent Wells | www.strava.com

A great ride this morning with Jeff and Mark. Jeff knew that I was curious about this one climb called “Iron Horse,“ so was nice enough to take me to that road so I could experience the climb. Still not as steep as Tower View, but definitely a challenge! Very thankful most of all to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for another safe ride.

HBD NATTY LIGHT

Monica Merced | www.strava.com

F500R#4 – KT’s Fast & Moist Special

Noe Espinosa | www.strava.com

Flatted both tires at mile 9, sounded ominous but we kept going. Got rained on and after that the wind picked up viciously but thankfully it was on our backs on the back end of the ride. Oh I forgot how I hated riding with wet socks.

My 1️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ mile race is over with 3 days to spare. Finished it off with a back to back century….also a goal I had for this year! 19th Century year to date!

Leo Vela (VCC) | www.strava.com

Thank you Nick for the "Huge" pull….of course you only pulled once….Lol! Oh yeah all the way! Thank you all cycling clubs NPR, Sun & Ski and everyone else whom I’ve cycled with, but especially "VCC " cheers to all. Everyone always questions what I train for….well my answer is, I’m not training. I am in the 10,000 mile race that starts Jan 1 and ends December 31. Now that is one of the toughest races you can ever do…Cheers friends and thanks for the support!

Girl On A Hover Board, Damp Dew Point Biking To E. Lake Houston Parkway

Texbiker.net Posted on December 28, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 28, 2019

An overcast sky and the remnants of heavy fog hung around delaying the start of today’s bike ride until 11:32 AM. With the high dew point the streets looked wet without raining. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route though when I started I planned on riding the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I changed my mind when the headwind getting to Walden slowed me down making it difficult to get back home at the time I wanted. I biked 27.42 miles putting my week’s total at 104.7 miles, December now totals 485.72 miles (281.3 miles on the road, 204.4 miles Zwifting). Year to date stands at 8,156 miles; 7,583 road miles and 573 virtual miles. 2019 miles are the most I ever biked in a year.

Weather while biked: start 71.4 (90% humidity, 68.3 dew point), overcast, wind SE 7 mph. Finish 75.7 (80% humidity, 69.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph. My wardrobe reflected the warmth: shorts, thermal long sleeve jersey topped with a short sleeve jersey. I felt comfortable most of the ride except when I crossed Lake Houston on FM 1960 and the wind chilled as it blew over the colder water. The dew point was close to the temperature keeping my water bottle wet from the ice chilled water being colder than the dew point.

Early in the ride I saw a young girl delicately balancing on an electric hover board. I forgot to get it on video but as I rode by her I asked if the board was a new Christmas present and she said yes. I hope she gets more confidence and skill. It looks hard to balance to me.

Later a man was jogging along FM 1960 when I stopped at the traffic light on Pinehurst Trail Drive. I waved hello. Later I saw him on the causeway over Lake Houston running to the east. I thought I would pass him when I turned around at E Lake Houston Parkway and headed back west but he disappeared. I planned on asking how he ran.

My glue repair on the GoPro mount came through the ride making me think I can trust it to hold the GoPro Hero7 I use during rides. Gorilla glue did the trick.

Sunday a cool front arriving early in the morning means cooler weather but lots of sun. Not sure if it will be warm enough to ride outdoors after going to church. If not Zwifting will be the option.
