About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston’s Bike Share Says Ridership Is Breaking Records

BCycle said it had its best year ever in 2019 as it added stations and brought on new riders.

Retired biologist pedals to save the bay she loves

By John DeLapp | www.mysanantonio.com

Trying to preserve the bay that she loves while cycling comes naturally to Lythia Metzmeier.

The Shoreacres resident recently retired from the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality after a career as a biologist that saw her taking water samples from the Galveston Bay. And Metzmeier has also spent a large amount of time looking at the body of water from another angle as the owner of a 22-foot sailboat.

“So, I’m either cycling or boating and, even with my work, I was just always involved with the bay,” she said. …

Bike Ride to Spring Creek Greenway With Some Disappointment

Texbiker.net Posted on December 26, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 26, 2019

As I prepared for today’s bike ride I thought of various routes and decided to ride the Spring Creek Greenway but because of the late start not ride all the way to I-45. Leaving home at 11:26 AM I made my way to the Bevell Jarrell Memorial Bridge over the San Jacinto River to the US59 greenway trailhead.

Weather today made for good biking: start 71 (70% humidity, 61.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 8 mph. Finish 75 (62% humidity, 61.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. I wore shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey (too much), and a jacket.

When I pulled up to the entrance a locked gated greeted me. I stopped and looked around and saw another biker approaching from his white car. I pointed out the locked gate and Raymond told me he drove some distance wanting to ride the greenway today. I told him about another waay to get to the greenway through Jesse Jones Park. He told me he didn’t know the way so I said I would show him.

We set off biking a short distance to the Townsen Bvld. exit from the US59 frontage road. Townsen Blvd took us to FM 1960 where we road west to Kenswick Drive. Kenswick Drive terminates at the entrance into Jesse Jones Park. I said goodbye to Raymond as I went to the maintenance building to see if anyone could unlock the gate. I found two helpful employees who said they would take care of the problem. I kept an eye out for Raymond to tell him but our paths didn’t cross again.

After reaching the trailhead to Carter Park I decided to turn back here. Earlier in the ride while still in Kingwood the mount holding my GoPro camera broke. I tried remounting it but then I remembered it broke several weeks ago and gluing it failed. I saved it but forgot about the break. I put the GoPro in my jacket pocket which meant I missed most of the good opportunities to record all of the other bikers out on the greenway.

Heading back to US59 I found the gate now unlocked. Raymond’s car still parked where he left it. Raymond told me his home flooded in Kingwood and he moved to another place. I put a Texbiker.net business card above the door handle and continued biking back home finishing the ride at 2:01 PM

Friday’s weather looks like a repeat of today with a couple of degrees cooler. Warm for December.

Surprisingly I set three new 2nd fastest times on the greenway according to Strava.
