About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Humble-area family gives back to waiter whose bike was stolen with help from local Academy store

By Michelle Iracheta | www.chron.com

When the Peterson family saw Aaron Rougeau, who’s their favorite waiter at Black Bear Diner near Humble, walking to work they wondered why.

The family soon learned Rougeau’s bike, which Rougeau used for transportation, had recently been stolen. In the spirit of Christmas, they forged a plan to get Rougeau a new bike, so he no longer had to walk to and from work.

Last week, with the help of Academy Sports + Outdoors in Humble, the family, including Ken and his wife Trisha with their children Braxton and Savannah, surprised Rougeau with a new bicycle and bike lock and presented it to him at his job. …

Vosper: The Last Mile is changing the face of bicycle retail, Part One

by Rick Vosper | www.bicycleretailer.com

The Last Mile is a common problem among all kinds of logistics providers. If you’re delivering 100 packages by truck (or phone connections via wire or cell towers, or schoolkids via bus), there’s a constant operational cost per mile. That means the cost of the first miles can be shared among all the deliveries. But for that last one, the proverbial last mile of service, the entire cost is borne by the last stops on the route, making them exponentially more expensive to deliver to than the ones at the beginning.

The Last Mile problem is why, 70 years after commercialization of cable TV, folks who live out in the sticks still have to use …

Zwift The Herd Tuesday Social Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 24, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 24, 2019

Christmas Eve weather outside looked great for a bike ride but I had a time limitation so I turned to Zwift and rode The Herd’s Tuesday Social Group Ride for 59:39 logging 20.47 miles. 305 other bikers joined me as we rode through the streets of London. The pace was not too hard and I moved up through the group to the front 30 a couple of times piercing the fence once. Most of the ride I hovered around 90 to 105.

I am still trying to get the hang of messaging while riding. I tried to login to the Discord forum for the ride but that is tough while pedaling and entering the URL, username, and password. Then Discord sent an email because my location changed from my last login. The tiny keyboard on my phone didn’t allow me to complete all of this successfully so I watched the messages as they popped up in Zwift.

Another biker messaged about jumping. His computer knocked him out of Zwift and getting back in he fell behind the group. I don’t know how to “jump” and the question was when you jump where do you land. The leader said he thought it would be near his position in the group. I could’ve used this in a ride where I had technical difficulties and started way behind the group.

Staying behind the fence during the ride required some vigilance as it would appear out of nowhere at times. I try to watch the small box in the upper right hand corner for the fence location but that doesn’t always alert you to sudden changes like when the route goes uphill and riders slow down. The leader controls the fence from his location and how many seconds it moves in front of him.

Man Biked 14K Miles, Then Got Hit From Behind in Texas

By Kate Seamons | www.newser.com

(NEWSER) – A Scottish man’s quest to bicycle around the world has been studded with setbacks: His bike got stolen in April and he had to quickly fly from Australia to home and back to get a new passport after his own sweat damaged his passport photo beyond recognition. Now Josh Quigley has suffered a more serious interruption to his journey, which has seen him log about 14,000 miles since April. The BBC reports the 27-year-old was hit by a car while biking in Texas. In a Sunday morning Facebook post, Quigley writes that he …

New book details Red River bridge war of the 1930s

By Andy Rieger | www.normantranscript.com

GORDONVILLE, Texas — The ride across the Willis Bridge connecting Oklahoma and Texas is tense, even on four wheels. Our gaggle of cyclists was heading back to Norman after the train dropped us at Gainesville, Texas a couple of years back when we approached the massive span across Lake Texoma. The pedestrian walkway is not suited for bicycles so we did what was the safest.

"We just have to own the bridge," said veteran local cyclist Phil Trotter. …

Canceled Zwifting for A Real Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 23, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2019

The last bike ride outdoors happened on December 15th. The weather warmed up to the mid 60’s today and I took to the road again cancelling my Zwift ride at 12:03 PM. I chose the “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route and riding 26.24 miles. December now totals 223.3 miles on the road and 184 miles Zwifting. YTD I am at 8,077 miles, the most I ever biked in a year.

I dressed for chilly weather wearing shorts, leg warmers, heavy thermal long sleeve jersey, and a jacket. Weather while I biked: start 65 (51% humidity, 46.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph. Finish 69 (42% humidity, 45.0 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 7 mph. The wind chill made it seem colder than the 69 degrees. The rest of the week’s weather may be in the 70’s during the day allowing for biking outdoors except for Christmas.
