About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Toward its aim to promote bicycle use, the 22-year-old nonprofit has 130 refurbished bikes to be distributed to local children on Sunday.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — The nonprofit group Austin Yellow Bike Project will be staging its annual bicycle giveaway for kids on Sunday.

The non-profit 501(c)(3) organization has been working since 1997 to get more bikes on the streets of Austin by operating community bike shops, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group, as detailed on its website.

This year, there are 130 bikes being given away, reaching out to …

Technical Difficulties Zwifting the ZSUN Sunday Social Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 22, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 22, 2019

The “Zwift ZSUN Sunday Social Ride (D)” started at 1:10 PM and I didn’t watch the time close enough to get everything ready for the start. My phone connected to a different wi-fi network and that kept the Zwift Companion from picking up all of my sensors via Bluetooth. I didn’t figure that out until after connecting the sensors to my desktop computer that runs the main Zwift software. Once I figured out the problem and put my phone on the correct wi-fi network the map came up in the companion app. By now the main group was out of sight which was probably okay because of the pace they were going. This was a fast social ride. I rode the course with a couple riders passing me and then I slowly reeled in a few bikers in front of me.

I saw messages from the group leader and riders telling some of the happenings at the front. The fence never became an issue for me unless the group would lap me. The ride lasted 90 minutes but I ended my ride after 1:03:51 riding 19.19 miles. Where I stand mileage wise:

  • 132.38 miles this week
  • 381.03 miles in December, 197 on the road and 184 on the trainer
  • 552.8 miles YTD on the Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer
  • 7.498 miles YTD road biking

The weather tried to warm up after church but when I got home it was 58 degrees signaling an indoor ride today. Sunny skies looked inviting but between the wind and coolness I chose Zwift. Monday may be warmer and I can ride outside.

Since The Subject of an Austin MTB Print Magazine Has Come up…

By RidingAgain | austinmountainbiking.com

I though maybe folks here could give their feedback on the idea…

Magazine content would follow the model of local, regional, and national presentation, and would have as its mission the development of the local mtb riding community, including helping riders understand the proper approach and conduct to trail use and maintenance.

Here’s a rough sketch of the magazine content…

1… Featured places in Austin to ride mountain bikes.

2… Featured Austin mtb personalities and organizations.

3… Article on current and future local trail development.

4… Article on trail building, maintenance, and related etiquette. …

Zwifting for World Bicycle Relief During A Social Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 21, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 21, 2019

With the Houston Texans playing at noon today I looked for a ride that began Saturday morning and found the “Zwift 3R Ride on for WBR Social Ride”. I knew what WBR stood for (World Bicycle Relief) and wanted to ride to support them. The leader rode 220km today before our ride as he raised money for WBR. During the ride the leader gave facts about WBR, some I knew and other I did not.

The ride began at 10:00 AM and lasted 60 minutes. In that time I biked 19.71 miles at an average speed of 19.6 mph. The ride leader wanted everyone to ride at 2.0 w/kg but that never happened and the 74 riders spread out over the course with me towards the back.

Fortunately the ride was mostly flat with one short climb of 6% or so. It didn’t take too long after the start for me to heat up enough and be glad I wasn’t outside in the 52 degree overcast weather. Sunday might warm enough to bike outdoors after church.

I set 3 personal records in Strava from among a long list of segments bikers created. Zwift reported a new person record for Fuego Flats of 56:16.
