About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Running With The Herd’s Bull Run Ride on Zwift

Texbiker.net Posted on December 18, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 18, 2019

Going up the mountain for the initial 7.5 miles of today’s 20.08 mile Zwifting included no running from me, just slow pedaling as I ground out the climbs. The profile looked like this.

12-18-2019 Strava Zwift Bike Ride Route and Profile

Notice the high point in the route profile? That included climbs of 17% which a flat lander like never climbs. The Blue Norcross AL cyclocross bike gets carried up terrain like that. A couple of times one of the Herd’s Sweeps gave me encouragement messages as we slogged up the climb. I rode The Herd’s Bull Runs before but none contained climbs like this. I set 3 Personal Records but they were not on the climbs.

My Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer recognized every climb making me pedal hard and slow up the inclines even as I shifted to the lowest gears the Blue Norcross AL bike had. I wondered if I would be able to stay on the bike all the way to the top. I passed a few bikers stopped on the side of the road. Zwift’s scenery moved us up through the tree line and into snow to the top where a radio tower marked the turnaround for the ride down.

The ride down didn’t always go down with short climbs thrown in to break up the descent and test the tired legs. I thought the last 4 or 5 miles took longer than it should for the 14 to 15 mph I pedaled. Finally after riding for 1:36:52 I reached the end and got off the bike. This was a real WORKOUT! I finished 82nd out of 299 bikers.

An old bike. A new perspective. A 50-pound weight loss.

Patrick Cook bought an old, used black Raleigh bicycle for $150 at Blue Line Bike Lab in the Heights. He didn’t know if would change his life.

That purchase in 2011 jumpstarted the fitness journey Cook continues today. He has added running routes and work-outs at the gym to his routine.

Cook, 39, has his sights set on running the Houston Marathon in 2021 — and qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

175 Miles: Reflections About Another Strong Week in My Cycling Journey

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Biking 25 miles in one day can be challenging or easy depending on your abilities and how you feel. Then there’s the weather like wind, rain, cold or heat to contend with. Traffic can be very scary even if you’re used to riding in it. Also important are the quintessential questions that come up riding a bike like: what to wear, what to eat, where to go? I must have figured all that out because I managed to make it another seven days in a row for the 10th week. This past week I totaled 175 miles, which is huge …

Indoors With The Herd, Winter Like Weather (Houston’s version) Outdoors

Texbiker.net Posted on December 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 17, 2019

Winter like weather (Houston’s version) arrived late yesterday dropping the temperature 30 degrees in an hour. This morning at wake up time 39 degrees awaited outside making this a Zwift bike ride day.

Before getting out of bed I opened the Zwift companion app on my phone and searched for a ride during the middle of the day and found The Herd’s Tuesday Social Group Ride. The Herd organizes a number of rides with one or more almost every day. Today’s ride started at 11:55 AM, perfect for my morning routine.

The course ran over generally flat terrain with a couple of short climbs. 322 bikers joined The Herd leaders but most of the time rode in front of the leaders bumping up against the fence. Several times I slowed to avoid going through the fence which I believe ran 10 seconds in front of the leader. I went through a few times but got back within a few seconds. Sometimes on a downhill the fence appears quickly and stop pedaling still coasts through the fence. With an hour riding time I rode 20.3 miles improving my December to 284.09 miles, maybe the most I rode in a December.

Wednesday the temperature forecast calls for a mid 50’s high meaning another round of Zwifting for me.
