About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift Joy Ride With Big Hills, Joyful All The Way Up

Texbiker.net Posted on December 16, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2019

As the weather forecast said a cold front arrived as I got ready to begin today’s Zwifting. The temperature dropped from 78 degrees at 11:40 AM to 57 degrees when I finished at 1:05 PM. Good decision to stay inside and sweat it out on the Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer.

I chose the SZR Evening Joy Ride following the 2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit. I registered in the “E” category thinking it wouldn’t be too hard. That was a wrong thought. 6% to 10% climbs appeared throughout the ride raising the question of why call this a joy ride? For me it was joy because the weather outside turned chilly below my 60 degree threshold.

Before the ride began I opened the Wahoo Utility app on my phone and activated ERG mode. ERG mode makes efforts more real, supposedly. After riding the circuit today I think the hills became very real. But that aside, the hills allowed me to catch up to the peloton when I fell behind. A few times I slowed down going up the climb because the fence appeared and I didn’t want to go pass it. I managed to not go through the fence one time during the ride; maybe a first unless I rode at the back.

The group today was less than 100 and sometimes I was at the back and other times near the front. According to Strava I set 3 personal records. 77 segments in Strava for this route, many of them climbs. A lot of segments in 15.13 miles.

Tuesday’s weather points to another ride in Zwift; cold and windy.

Houston: Centerpoint Trail Study – Public Comment until Dec. 20th

flangehead | www.bikeforums.net

Segment 1 Comments I’m particularly interested in the western end of this trail.

I have looked at Segment 1 and I think they are overlooking a much better opportunity. I will be submitting the following recommendation:To improve the safety and utility of the trail, I recommend the Segment 1 alignment be an extension of the existing trail north to Hammerly. Relative to the route in the DRAFT, this alignment would …

These 25 U.S. cities are affordable and bike-friendly, per GoBankingRates.com

www.usatoday.com

Perhaps you’d like to vacation in a place where you can easily get around by bike so you don’t have to rent a car. Or maybe you’d like to like in a city where you could bike to work without having to contend with cars trying to run you off the road.

Only some cities across the United States cater to biking enthusiasts with designated bike lanes, rest stops and easily accessible bike racks, however. …

  1. Austin, Texas. As Austin continues to expand and grow its infrastructure, on-street biking opportunities abound. The city has almost 10 miles of protected bike lanes, and many residents make their way around the downtown area on a bike. Recreational biking at McKinney Falls State Park is a popular activity during the warmer months. …

Wind Blown Warm Bike Ride to Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on December 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 15, 2019

With winter less than a week away you expect winter like weather but today late summer weather returned. Starting the bike ride at 12:41 PM I set out on the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route headed west and then north. 82 degrees awaited outside as I left the long sleeve jersey at home and wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey feeling comfortable the whole 27.15 miles.

I almost forgot what it felt like riding in this kind of weather. The strong wind made the ride north to Valley Ranch Bend Drive not so hard but the trip back to the south required extra effort due to the wind. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (67% humidity, 69.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 15 mph gusts to 31 mph. Finish 81 (66% humidity, 68.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 14 mph gusts to 23 mph. The times I glanced down at the Elemnt computer riding into the head the power jumped around from 150 to almost 300 watts. Wind breaks and riding to the east help reduce the wind’s efforts to slow me down.

With the warm weather I saw other people along the route, some walking and some on bikes. One lady walking a dog got pulled back from wherever she was when the dog lunged towards me jerking her arm suddenly (captured in the video).

Sadly winter weather returns Tuesday with highs in the 50’s and night time in the 30’s. Monday probably rain. Thank goodness for Zwifting.
