About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Adding to the existing 35.6 miles of off-street paths or bike lanes in Georgetown, the plan proposes an additional 64.2 miles of off-street paths, bike lanes on streets, and sharrows, which are pavement markings indicating shared use by vehicles and bicycles.

Many of the projects proposed in the plan …

73 Degrees December Bike Ride to Huffman with BMX Excitement

Texbiker.net Posted on December 14, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 14, 2019

The bike ride started at 12:05 PM after waiting for the temperature to get to 70 degrees to not wear leg warmers. I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route because the last time I rode it was November 19th before my trip to Ohio for Thanksgiving. I rode 32.69 miles which put me over my 150 mile goal for December at 169.9 miles on the road. Combining road and Zwifting my total for the month comes to 221.49 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 71 (48% humidity, 50.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 5 mph. Finish 73 (43% humidity, 49.5 dew point), fair, wind SE 6 mph. While it got above 70 degrees I dressed for the 60;s with shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, and jacket. In the shade it felt chilly (I am a wimp) but after I warmed up I felt comfortable. The light wind helped not chill me too. At some point winter weather will arrive and Zwifting will be my daily activity. Winter arrives a week from today.

Until I got an email last night from our city councilman biking this route concerned me because of the potential traffic rerouting on the bridges on W. Lake Houston Parkway at the San Jacinto River. The north traveling traffic detours to the southbound lanes while replacing bearing pads at a section joint near the north side of the bridge. But the email said the work schedule changed while the city evaluated some details. For now the normal traffic patterns remain and I can ride that direction without detouring. The southbound trail along W. Lake Houston Parkway at the Ben’s Branch bridge remains closed while the Harris Count Flood Control District contractors remove silt from Ben’s Branch. I heard equipment as I rode under the bridge but I could not see them. Dirt in the bayou shows signs of activity west of the bridge but not to the east where it connects with Lake Houston. The silt contributed to flooding in Kingwood earlier this year because the water flow slowed due to the silt buildup over the years. Until this year HCFCD did not have authority to work on Ben’s Branch because of numerous owners.

Early in the ride I almost collided with a young boy on a BMX bike as I entered the greenbelt trail on Silver Falls in Hunters Ridge. The trail entrance goes through some brush and trees before you can see much and as soon as I saw him I yelled out swerving left and then right as he ducked passed me. Another BMX rider followed about 30 to 40 feet later but no problem since he saw the earlier close call. That lone encounter ended the crash course for the bike ride.

Sunday weather may include 80 degrees. The RGV will be warmer than that making me yearn for some heat.

Pit Bull Shot By Police After It Attacked An Elderly Man

By Sonia Ramirez-Muñoz | sanangelolive.com

ODESSA, TX –An Odessa Police Department officer shot and killed a pit bull after it attacked an elderly man on a bicycle on Thursday afternoon.

According to CBS7, the victim, an 80-year-old man, told police that he was riding his bicycle when the pit bull attacked and knocked him down. The man protected himself with his bike until the police arrived. He suffered a bite to the hand during the attack.

When police arrived at the scene the dog began charging at one of the officers, so the officer discharged his weapon resulting in the death of the dog. Police said the same dog had tried to attack another person earlier in the day.

Mystery Solved During Bike Ride to FM 1485 And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on December 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 13, 2019

The weather warmed up for today’s bike ride but I wasn’t sure why until I passed by the New Caney ISD football stadium on the way back to Kingwood. On the giant scoreboard was the biggest fireplace I think I ever saw. It burned full force with the flames dancing across the screen from the Yule Time screensaver many of us have seen n our computers. With a fire that big no wonder it warmed up the low 60’s yesterday to 74 degrees today!

Punching the start button on the Wahoo Elemnt computer at 11:56 AM I set out to ride the “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route. I didn’t think too much about the two horizontal lines on the Elemnt’s screen where the cadence shows until after I began the ride and the two lines stayed there rather than numbers. I pushed the left side button on the Elemnt to see what sensors connected and the cadence sensor wasn’t connected. I continued riding and decided to circle back home and get a new battery. (After the ride I found that I replaced this battery on 11/3/2019. I think it should have lasted longer. I tested the old battery and it showed low power.) The new battery put the cadence sensor back online and I went back to biking.

Weather during the bike ride: start 70 (73% humidity, 60.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 74 (55% humidity, 56.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Being cautious I probably over dressed some with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long jersey, and jacket. I didn’t feel overly hot during the ride but near the end of the ride I looked at the jacket sleeve and saw spots where moisture came through. What started as a mostly cloudy ride changed to partly cloudy by the time I finished at 2:28 PM. Saturday’s weather looks like a repeat and I plan on biking.
